Short break in Bradford on Avon

AFG, stayed: September 2024

It is with regret that it is not possible to be more positive with the review.
The room allocated was reasonably clean, however the bathroom was not fit for purpose. The drainage from the bath and sink was almost non existant, water from the sink bubbling up into the bath when the plug from the sink was removed. The shower control was broken and when using the shower the water did not drain out and so you were left standing in water up to you ankles and worse, the water had detritus floating in it regurgitated from the pipe work. This problem was reported to a member of staff on two occasions and it was pointed out there was a health and safety issue. Nothing was done to put this right during our short stay. An alternative room was not offered which would have been acceptable, assuming the plumbing was working in other rooms.
We also experienced no hot water, as did others in the Piggery where we were staying. This issue was resolved eventually.
Some of the restaurant staff unfortunately gave the impression they did not want to be there. That said one of the breakfast staff, a lady, was both very friendly and professional. The food was fine overall but the menu was limited for dinner. Breakfast was fine.
In mitigation we were let off our extras charge.

Widbrook Grange says...

Dear Mr Good,
My apologies for the delay in responding I wanted to review with the operations team before I responded. I am both saddened and disappointed that we failed to meet our expectations on service on this occasion and please accept our sincerest apologies. This is not the experience that we are hoping to deliver at Widbrook Grange and apologise that this occurred and thank you for highlighting your time with us so we are able to improve for future guests.
Unfortunately we had an issue with the boiler in the Piggery and were waiting for a part to arrive which was dealt with as swiftly as possible but we appreciate this did affect your experience. Regarding the plumbing this was not mentioned by the guests prior to yourself but have been informed that the maintenance team were contacted to look into urgently on your departure. I can see that you were booked in a twin room and there was not another twin bedroom available for the evenings you were staying and therefore no alternative could be provided which we would usually do immediately if this option was available.
Please be rest assured that your comments have been passed on to our operations management team to make sure staff training can be made and we can learn from what your comments. We have new associates in our team who are still learning the standards and therefore may have been nervous so hopefully the training will help with this and increase our service levels.
Thank you again we cannot improve without feedback and we hope you visit in the future to see that we have done exceed in doing this. Best Wishes, Widbrook Grange team

Some good points but overall - disappointing.

JH, Oxfordshire, stayed: September 2024

We stayed for two nights in early September on a Daily Telegraph offer. The plus points were - friendly and helpful staff, comfortable bed with large feather pillows, lovely shower with huge bath sheets, nice food. I'm afraid that our room and the buildings generally were rather disappointing. I'm not sure if the furnishings were attempting to achieve the "shabby chic" look but our room looked as if it had been furnished as a result of a house clearance. My husband went to sit on a chair in reception only to be enveloped in a cloud of dust and the dining room chairs are stained and dirty. The buildings , generally, looked really neglected - one of the handrails leading to our first floor room ( in an outbuilding )was rotten and coming away from the wall ( I reported it ) and windowsills and doors all needed a lick of paint. There are buckets placed around the courtyard which had once, I imagine , held flowers but now sport only weeds. The gardens, too, looked in need of some attention. I think the staff do their best here but some financial input is needed here if this pretty house , in such an attractive location , is to survive as a destination for those in search of a country house break.
