An Interview with Edgbaston Park Hotel, Birmingham

We recently spoke with Richard Metcalfe, the CEO of Edgbaston Park Hotel, and Cooper, his fox-red Labrador, on why they think being a dog-friendly hotel is great,  as well as special facts about their hotel!

Why do you love being a dog-friendly hotel?

In addition to recognising the importance of pets to our guests, being pet-friendly allows us to create a welcoming atmosphere for both owners and their furry companions. We understand that pets are part of the family, and we take pride in extending hospitality to include them.

What does a doggie welcome at the hotel look like?

Our dog-friendly initiatives go beyond just accommodation. At the entrance, we’ve got a designated dog check-in area equipped with treats, water bowls, and a plush bed. For an enhanced experience, guests can opt for our canine comfort package, which includes a cosy dog bed, a tasty chew, and a water bowl, available for just £25.

What is the best dog story you have at your hotel?

One memorable dog tale involves a canine guest who, with impressive curiosity, managed to nudge open a fire escape door and explore the courtyard. It highlights the playful and adventurous spirit of our four-legged visitors.

Why do dogs love your hotel?

Our commitment to acknowledging the importance of pets to our guests and incorporating pet-friendly amenities creates an environment where dogs feel not just accommodated but genuinely welcomed. The positive energy from our staff and fellow guests adds to the overall enjoyment for our four-legged friends.

Do you have a dog/pet?

Yes, a dog called Cooper.

What’s their name/breed?

A fox-red labrador called Cooper.

What do they love doing?

Running.

Tell us a story about your pet?

He had cancer, so he has had a large part of his jaw removed, which gives him the talent of being able to hold three tennis balls in his mouth at once. He loves trying to fit as many tennis balls in his mouth as possible!

What are your favourite dog-friendly places in the local area?

Cannon Hill Park stands out as a personal favourite, offering expansive open spaces perfect for delightful walks with furry companions.

What are the best things to do in the area or your favourite local haunts?

Going into Birmingham city centre – it’s got a great selection of restaurants and nightlife.

Tell us something interesting about the hotel.

Edgbaston Park Hotel stayed open during COVID-19 to look after NHS staff which is something we’re proud of.
What is your favourite space in the hotel and why?

Our 1900 Bar and lounge area. It has a great selection of food and drink, and it is dog-friendly too!

What is your go-to dish at the hotel?

It’s got to be the Bham Bananas dessert on our 1900 Restaurant menu. It’s caramelised banana, white chocolate foam and espresso ice cream.

What is your go-to cocktail/mocktail at the hotel?

A good old-fashioned gin and tonic.
