50th wedding anniversary gift

JSF, Tyne And Wear, stayed: September 2022

We received this stay as a gift. It was something we would never book for ourselves. The room was nice enough with all amenities however the beds were very soft and did not really suit us. The restaurant staff were lovely and attentive although the menu was quite limited. What we had was really nice and plentiful, we did not have any wines as they are very expensive. Breakfast again was plentiful and everything you would expect from this calibre of hotel. As well as the beds my only real complaint was that the courtyards were not lit well enough and were, in my opinion, quite dangerous in places as the old flagstones could be uneven for people, like me, with walking difficulties. All in all though quite an experience and a nice gift

Two Night Stay at Lumley

Geoffrey B, Wiltshire, stayed: November 2022

On arrival the staff at reception were most helpful. The offer was made to take our luggage to our room which we declined. However we were not told that our room was up a small spiral stone staircase which proved difficult. Guests should be advised of the location of their rooms.
Our room in the castle was large and well appointed and the public rooms were comfortable and welcoming. To reach the restaurant from our room we had to descend the staircase, cross the carpark to reception and cross the courtyard. It would not be pleasant in bad weather.
We were looking forward to our first dinner in the restaurant. All the staff in the restaurant were very helpful and friendly. The menu was somewhat limited but acceptable. We both ordered a rare steak. They both arrived cold in the centre and basically uneatable. My wife refused to eat hers but I struggled through the 60% gristle. We have never had such a poor quality and badly cooked steak in the UK or abroad. The cost of my wife's meal was deleted from our bill but our hoped for pleasant evening was a disaster. The next evening we ate fish and chips in the hope that could not be badly cooked. It was OK but very expensive for a meal we could have got at the local "chippy" for a fifth of the price.
.If you ignore the restaurant, our stay at Lumley Castle was very pleasant. The location is good, the rooms, both public and private are good and all of the staff, excellent. Shame about the restaurant!
