A very pleasant couple of nights escape .
It is evident that a 600 year old castle is not the best starting point, logistically, for a luxury hotel! The staff were all very cheery & pleasant & we enjoyed our two evening meals in the restaurant. Breakfast on the first morning was a struggle & appeared frantic & frenetic from a service point of view. The second morning was much better.
We enjoyed the break but as lead I found the attitude of Off peak luxury very strange & proscriptive. I booked via a Telegraph ad but would think twice before using Off peak luxury again. Very heavy handed conditions, unnecessarily so. A shame, since my previous Telegraph booking experiences have been excellent.

Mixed feelings
It was part of the deal that we stayed in a room within the castle itself. Our room was accessed by a steep spiral stone staircase with a rope as a handhold. Before allocating such rooms, the fitness level of the guests needs to be checked. Fortunately we are a pair of fairly fit 80 year olds, even so we needed help with our luggage. It was a fantastic place to stay at and the staff were excellent. The restaurant setting was good, but the food wasn't wonderful and the menu wasn't changed each evening. No information in the room for guests regarding the castle itself and the surrounding area, we found this an amazing oversight.
Durham is an amazing city and we enjoyed our time there.
