Very noisy unable to sleep
This place is so beautiful. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous. The staff are absolutely fantastic. Only things that spoilt it are that there are so many tables crammed into the restaurant that we were unable to have our beautiful food carved at the table which is part of the experience. The room was very noisy with wedding part to the side and above up and we were unable to sleep. Something was banging in the wind all night on our window, the window was also broken. Not what I would of expected.
Disappointing
Room was beautiful food extremely disappointing, came out cold and meat was pure fat, then waited 35 minutes for replacement which was still cold and 10 pm by this time. Have been before and it was exceptional no idea what happened this time, has put me off booking again
Mixed feelings
It was part of the deal that we stayed in a room within the castle itself. Our room was accessed by a steep spiral stone staircase with a rope as a handhold. Before allocating such rooms, the fitness level of the guests needs to be checked. Fortunately we are a pair of fairly fit 80 year olds, even so we needed help with our luggage. It was a fantastic place to stay at and the staff were excellent. The restaurant setting was good, but the food wasn't wonderful and the menu wasn't changed each evening. No information in the room for guests regarding the castle itself and the surrounding area, we found this an amazing oversight.
Durham is an amazing city and we enjoyed our time there.
