60th Birthday Castle retreat

Chris & Anne, Greetland, West Yorks, stayed: November 2023

Fantastic stay from start to finish.
The room was a real treat with a four poster bed & narniaesque bathroom hidden through the wardrobe.
Prosecco & chocolates in the room on arrival was welcoming, with plenty of other little treats, chocolate, crisps, biscuits & plenty of tea, coffee etc.
The restaurant felt intimate with just the right amount of subdued lighting & the service was professional but friendly. The food was excellent.
The Castle had a real medieval feel with it's many original features but also the addition of modern day facilities.
The only criticism was the high price of the alcohol in both the bar & restaurant but as it was a special 60th birthday for Anne, we splashed out.
Would highly tecommend.

All generally good and relaxing

Another easy chair in the bedroom would have been good as a small fridge.

We shall return

Ainslie Kirkpatrick Wiltshire, stayed: April 2024

After a long but pleasant journey, we knew we d arrived when the unmistakable profile of Lumley Castle hove into view. Winding through the lovely grounds and into the courtyard- our holiday had begun! The castle s unique layout defies logical description, but thes friendly invaders were quickly made most welcome. Our conveniently-placed ground-floor room offered every amenity, including a view over the garden, with a nice thread of luxury., and we were able to park the car right by our front door.
We d been eagerly anticipating dinner after our long day, and, dear reader - it did not disappoint! The disposition of the castle entailed the most intriguing journey into the breathtaking central courtyard - you ll have to see it for yourselves, it s beyond words of mine to depict - then through the original medieval vaulted undercroft to the bar area and superb restaurant. Silver-service from start to finish, and a top-notch menu faultlessly executed. A halibut steak with herb crust, and duck breast served with cous cous linger still in the memory and a first class wine list with some well-chosen bottles at very reasonable prices underpins the entire offering. Truly remarkable.
Our stay in County Durham was but the first part of a harum scarum family reunion through the area on a tight schedule,, but after a good night s sleep we enjoyed a wonderful traditional full-house breakfast (don t spare the horse!s) then a short drive to the Park and Ride into Durham city centre. Suffice to say, the glorious Cathedral defies description! Back late afternoon to our comfortable nest at the Castle, where our thoughtfully provided bottle of chilled Prosecco sharpened our anticipation of another gourmet dinner. Spot-on again, of course.
An easy check out in the morning brought to an end our most-enjoyable visit toLumley Castle. If you ve managed to stick with this review to its conclusion, I do hope you ve tapped into the wonderful stay we enjoyed. As we look back, we smile to remember every aspect of our holiday here. There was nothing, not even the smallest thing, at which we even raised an eyebrow, let alone passed comment.
I commend Lumley Castle to you unreservedly, and please don t forget to take oodles of photographs to remember your stay.
