Overview

Burgh Island Hotel in Devon doesn't just welcome dogs; it goes above and beyond to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience for both guests and their canine companions. The journey to the island is an adventure in itself, offering various options for guests with dogs. Whether strolling by foot during low tide, riding in the hotel's Land Rovers, or experiencing the unique sea tractor during high tide, every approach is an opportunity for excitement and exploration.

The vast 26 acres of land surrounding the hotel are not just for human enjoyment; they are a haven for dog-friendly activities. Guests can take leisurely walks with their furry friends, exploring the scenic landscapes and, perhaps, even indulging in a game of fetch on the golden beaches or around the mermaid pool. The hotel's commitment to providing dog-friendly spaces enhances the overall charm of the retreat, ensuring that every member of the family, including the four-legged ones, has a delightful time. Nestled in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with captivating views overlooking Bigbury-on-Sea, the hotel's location is an idyllic setting for those seeking a tranquil seaside escape. The historic Art Deco property, with its origins dating back to 1929, has been meticulously restored to capture the glamour of its past. This restoration not only preserves the charm of a bygone era but also provides a unique backdrop for a stay filled with nostalgia and luxury. The association with iconic figures like Noel Coward and Agatha Christie further immerses guests in the fascinating history of the hotel.

The dining experience at Burgh Island Hotel is equally enchanting. While dogs are welcome at the Pilchard Inn, pet owners can indulge in a glamorous evening at the Ballroom, leaving their dogs comfortably in their rooms. The seasonal menu, showcasing local produce within a 30-mile radius and reflecting an eco-friendly ethos, adds a touch of sustainability to the culinary journey. Live music on Wednesdays and Saturdays enhances the romantic atmosphere, offering an invitation to dance under the stars — an experience not to be missed, especially if you have your black-tie attire at the ready.

The Artist Studio, named after Turner, is a haven for both guests and their furry companions. This dog-friendly open-plan room boasts sea views, a sumptuous king-size bed, and luxurious amenities. The historical connection to Turner's sketching adventure adds a unique narrative to the stay, creating a sense of connection to the island's artistic past. With thoughtful additions like WiFi, a docking station, fluffy bathrobes, and Noble Isle toiletries, the studio promises a well-rounded and enjoyable experience, ensuring both guests and their dogs feel truly pampered.

The experience to enjoy at Burgh Island Hotel are endless. Embark on creative journeys with Island Artist Emma Carter Bromfield during occasional small group sessions tailored for all abilities. These experiences not only unleash your artistic potential but also offer insights into Emma's 43 years of island life, sharing captivating island legends and revealing her unique journey as an artist. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of the Ballroom with live music every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday night. House bands provide entertainment, creating a delightful ambiance. While dancing is optional, the addition of live piano music on other evenings enhances the overall musical experience, making for enjoyable and memorable evenings.

Don't forget to explore the picturesque surroundings of dog-friendly Bigbury-on-Sea and its neighbouring areas for a diverse range of activities. From leisurely strolls and games on the sandy shores of Bigbury Beach to visits to dog-friendly Bantham Beach, coastal walks along the South West Coast Path, and unique boat trips along the coastline, the options abound. Dine with Your Dog

Your canine companion may join you for a meal in Pilchard Inn, where you can experience the rich legacy of The Pilchard Inn, a historic island pub boasting a remarkable seven centuries of history. There are few places more enchanting than this establishment to perch, observe the rhythmic dance of the tides, and unwind with a refreshing pint, all while indulging in your favorite culinary delights.

Step into the snug embrace of this timeless pub, where the cozy, wood-beamed interior exudes history and ambiance at every corner adorned with stone-flagged floors. Immerse yourself in the tales woven into the very fabric of The Pilchard Inn and uncover its captivating past — a truly inviting invitation awaits you. Should you wish to throw on your most glamorous outfit (Black tie and evening dress) and experience something truly special in the Ballroom, your dog can rest in your room. The menu is changed seasonally, using only the finest in local produce and the chef's pride themselves on their eco-friendly ethos, sourcing 80% of their ingredients within a 30-mile radius and using the best local seafood and free-range meat. Live music is performed on Wednesday and Saturday and you are invited, but not compelled, to venture onto The Ballroom dance floor to enjoy some romance on the outside dance floor, under the stars.

Pre Christmas break

Marita D, Devon, stayed: December 2018

Having stayed here many times we wanted to see how the Hotel would be run with new owners.
We enjoyed our stay as most of the staff are the same.  I thought there could have been a few Christmas decorations around the Hotel but sadly there were none, not even a tree.
We missed having breakfast in the Ganges restaurant but that was closed due to the new owners refurbishing.
We will visit in the New Year to see what else will be changing. Hopefully not too much.
The Hotel is a gem and hopefully will not lose too much of its Art Deco Style.

An Ideal Place to Escape to...

Hayley, Berkshire, stayed: October 2018

Your journey to Burgh Island Hotel may be long and a little unusual but from the moment you step onto the island it is worth while. Saying that you must embrace the ethos of this location to truly get the best out of your time there. Do take the opportunity to have, as they call it, 'a digital detox'. Take a moment to watch the sunrise or sunset, hear the rush of the waves against the rocks and take in the vista which surrounds the island. If you are not naturally a writer or painter then this place could easily turn you into one. To end I would say the Black Tie and live Band evenings are wonderful and for a truly romantic time let go of all thoughts of anything except the person who is right there with you.
