Great stay
Overall a very good experience.
Okay
I would describe the hotel as dog tolerant rather than dog friendly, alot of the grounds are golf course and therefore out of bounds for dog walking. The room (Castle Room) wasn't great and looked out onto the car park, felt like a generic hotel room however the bathroom was top quality. Upon contacting reception they found us another room which was much better and had a nicer view, this was much appreciated.
We ate in the brasserie on the first night, okay but lots of children (we appreciate this was aimed at families) and the food wasn't value for money in our opinion. On the second day of our stay there was a wedding and therefore the public room where dogs are allowed in the hotel was closed off. This was disappointing. Our meal in the Great Western restaurant was okay, food was lovely however the service was patchy. Upon looking at the menu my husband and I noticed that we had different versions, we queried this and the waiter took my husbands menu away and said it was incorrect. He did not return with a correct menu and we had to ask! Also quite a wait for the wine to arrive. Finally the wrong dessert came out for my husband, a mistake which the waiter apologised for. Not the five star service we were expecting. Breakfast was great on both mornings, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Grounds were amazing and location is great, service could be improved but overall an "okay" stay. We stayed at the hotel in 2010, and unfortunately our return visit did not live up to expectations.
Special break
Had a wonderful break at Bovey Castle in May. Beautiful weather. Staff were welcoming and attentive. Hotel very comfortable. Room excellent..requested a quiet room. Restaurants were first class as was the food. Unusually we never left the hotel such was the level of interest and activity (golf! ) . Golf
professional and staff were great. Very helpful. Course was in immaculate condition.
