Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings

WR, Lancashire, stayed: September 2016

We booked Armathwaite Hall for a special 2 day weekend treat, the hotel was very busy with weddings on both Saturday and Sunday, the room allocated to us was not as shown in the brochure it was tired and in need of refurbishment, a big disappointment.  The staff without exception were excellent, the restaurant service / food equally excellent.  I would book again but insist on a room as shown in the brochure and book Monday to Thursday when hopefully the hotel was catering for none wedding guests.

We say...

Thank you for your feedback following your stay at Armathwaite Hall.

Your comments have been forwarded to the hotel and they are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food and experienced excellent service.  They have confirmed that you were allocated one of their club rooms, being a traditional spacious room in the main house, however it is one that is next in line for refurbishment.

Kind regards

  • Would stay here again

OK, but wouldn't go back.

AO, Cheshire, stayed: September 2016

We booked a one night stay with 5 course meal and use of the Spa facilities, via OffPeakLuxury.com. We also thought we'd take advantage of the lovely walks in the area and so we also paid an upgrade to bring our dog. This was great as the hotel provided a dog bed (we took our own anyway), some poop bags and a bag of treats.

The spa is lovely, we loved the outdoor hot tub (in the rain) and the thermal suite. We didn't use the gym but it looked well equipped and not too busy. The food was also amazing quality and presented really nicely (portions were small but after 5 courses I was full, although husband could have eaten all 5 courses again!) The hotel staff were also very polite, efficient and attentive. The hotel grounds were also really well kept and very well presented. There endeth our list of positives!

We were on the ground floor which was the main thoroughfare to a wedding going on down the hall. So it got noisy at night and there were always loads of people passing, the dog wasn't happy with all the noise outside the door so was very disgruntled while we were in the room and was awake, grumbling and pacing for most of the night. Secondly, the plumbing in the room was SO noisy. Every time someone in the room next door or above, turned the tap on or flushed the loo, there was a series of loud knocks that seemed to come from behind the wall, like the boiler or something. With wedding guests returning to their rooms at all times of the night, this banging went on ALL night, so we didn't really get any sleep. Thirdly, I think the waste water pipe from the rooms above, ran down a pipe in our room, so it sounded as though water was coming through the ceiling at about 6am when someone decided to have a shower.

Lastly, this hotel is NOT dog friendly. Our poor pooch wasn't allowed anywhere in the hotel, not even the bar area etc, so she had to stay in the room for most of our stay. We were able to take her out for walks etc but given that it was chucking down with rain, it would have been nice if we could have taken her to the brasserie or even the Reception area, to just sit and have a coffee while she was with us. I don't see why this hotel would call itself 'dog friendly' or state 'we welcome dogs' if they have to stay confined to the room. I purposely booked this hotel because we could take our dog, so this was really disappointing - especially as dog walking in the Lake District is so popular.

One more thing which we found disappointing, is that no one pointed out to us, before we arrived, that there was a formal dress code for evening dinner. My husband didn't bring a suit, or suit trousers, but had brought smart jeans and a were approached by the Head waiter as we tried to enter the Lake View Restaurant, and asked whether we had received an email about the dress code, but we hadn't received any information whatsoever before our arrival. After a little 'telling off' we were allowed in eventually, but "only because it is quiet" This didn't start the evening off on a good foot. The food and service was excellent however, but the atmosphere was so stuffy and not at all relaxed.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the walks around Armathwaite Hall, the spa facilities and the good food and drink, but we tried to spend as little time inside the hotel as possible. The interior is very tired and old fashioned and the room wasn't of 4* standard. Had a nice time but won't be returning.
