Disappointing

WA, Gwynedd, stayed: August 2023

Externally, this is a lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds. The service, however, was poor, and the room was dark and quite old-fashioned. Although we had booked the restaurant for dinner, no tables were available and we were obliged to sit alone in the breakfast room instead, which was cold and lacking in atmosphere. We had paid a lot of money for a luxury dinner, bed and breakfast break, and this experience was very disappointing. Matters were not helped when we checked out. We were presented with a full bill for our stay, even though it had been paid in full in advance online.

We say...

Thank you for your review.

I am sorry to hear that you were not given a restuarant table and dined in the breakfast room, we can see there was a time on the booking.  Thanks for bringing this to our attention, we will contact the hotel to make sure this doesn't reoccur.

Kind regards,

Country Hotel Break

Cragwood Country House says...

I would like to apologise that you were left feeling disappointed with the dinner service you had booked with us. On the rare occasion we get things wrong, we do appreciate the opportunity to make changes and put things right.

As a small country house hotel, we have two dining rooms that we use for dinner. One of the dining rooms (which I believe you ate in) is also turned around and used for breakfast but not a specific 'breakfast room'.

We do try and split this fairly, as we appreciate it can be quiet, with little atmosphere, if there are more guests in one and not in the other. For this, I am extremely sorry. We were fully booked that evening which would have meant there would have been a considerable amount more tables booked for the same dining room so I am not sure why you were on your own in there and something I will be looking into.

I am also sorry that you were presented with a bill on the morning of departure. Sadly, my receptionist had been in hospital with her husband until the early hours of the morning and so couldn't be here which meant my wedding coordinator had to check guests out. She wasn't too familiar with the bills for Off Peak Luxury but she has now received the full training.

Again, please accept my sincere apologies that you left feeling disappointed. I have taken onboard everything you have said and will make sure going forward, that these areas can be approved.

Kind Regards

Hotel Manager

Not so luxurious as I thought

Anon, stayed: July 2023

Although some of the bedrooms we peeped at whilst staying looked gorgeous our bedroom was as tired looking you would expect from a much lower standard hotel. An old bathroom, dull old wallpaper with joins showing, stained old carpet, in fact we were shocked and disappointed with the room. We had babies crying by us and a couple doors away a dog yapping. No receptionist is available after I think 9pm and any enquiries made through a waiter. On a positive side the bedroom was clean although for the life of me I can t understand why these hotels are still on the Covid bandwagon by providing no room servicing especially for what they are charging. The staff were all wonderful and helpful and the gardens beautiful also the hotel position was very well placed for Ambleside and Bowness. Meals were minuscule and for 4* given they re build up to the restaurant I didn t expect babies crying, and people s inappropriate dress, it totally downgraded what the hotel was trying to achieve. I do understand it s a holiday hotel but you can t promote one thing and serve up another. Public room were well kept, historical and comfortable however our bedroom and the meals spoilt our stay.

Review of recent stay

Alan F, stayed: May 2026

IMy partner and I were looking forward to our stay at the Cragwood Hotel. The restaurant and menu were good, and the grounds spectacular. What we found disappointing was theoverall ambiance. The room we were hiven was small, the decor tired, furniture threadbare. Our main issue was a bathroom fan that did not turn off, and kept on hoing for hours. We complained to hotel staff, but were treated as if it was our fault about not knowing about the isolation switch.
The hotel felt like a mix of luxury break and Fawlty Towers.
