Accessed along a private drive, and adjoining a cluster of well-maintained estate buildings, Stable Cottage (ref UUD) makes a romantic hideaway for two, offering stylishly furnished accommodation – its walls adorned with the original work of various Scottish artists. The larger Victorian detached Gardener’s Cottage (ref UXT) has been elegantly furnished, and features an attractive shared garden with a bridge over a burn and a small waterfall. Arkland Mill (ref STTZ) stands detached with a lovely large garden, a summerhouse and its own bridge over the stream. Marwhin House (SWWR) and Marwhin Cottage (ref SWWS) also stand detached, situated within 25 yards of each other, still with there own privacy, the latter two properties being set in gardens with a delightful stream and pond. Woodland walks and hillside trails radiate from the doorstep. Dumfries lies just 12 miles away, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and museums, as well as a good theatre. Castle Douglas (8 miles) is a traditional market town with individual shops specialising in food and local produce. There are many beautiful beaches within easy reach along the Solway, and the National Trust Threave Gardens, 8 miles, makes for an interesting day out. Other tourist attractions in the area include the Galloway Kite Trail, the Galloway Forest Park and golf courses and museums in Dumfries. Village shop and pub within 4 miles.

Whilst set in a beautiful rural location, Grobdale of Girthon is only 6 miles from the picturesque town of Gatehouse of Fleet, which has a variety of excellent eating places, two very well stocked shops and a pharmacy. There are many attractions in and around the town including the Mill on the Fleet Visitor Centre and Cardoness Castle. There are also delightful beaches within a few minutes drive of the town, including Mossyard and Cardoness.

With mountain biking, fishing, scenic coastal walks and forest trails, golf and water sports close by, there is something for everyone. A visit to Kirkcudbright is a must! Known as ’the artists’ town’, it attracts visitors throughout the year drawn by the harbour, historic high street and the diverse range of annual events and visitor attractions. Wylies Brae is a lovely little cottage in the heart of the village, a hugely popular area for walkers and cyclists. Wylies Brae is peacefully set just off the Main Street and has been modernised in 2020 with a newly fitted kitchen and the cosy living room has a lovely wood burning stove.
New Galloway is a quaint little village with a village shop, excellent coffee shops and the Catstrand, an Arts and Information Centre and a theatre.

For a great day out at any time of year explore the Galloway Glens and picturesque forest trails or for the more adventurous exhilarating mountain biking as the park is home to two of the world famous 7stanes mountain bike trails at Kirroughtree and Glentrool.

The Byre @ Camp Douglas is a lovely and inviting barn conversion set around a courtyard and boasting picturesque views over Loch Ken. Furnished and beautifully decorated it is a large, bright and airy house with lots of space for all the family to enjoy. On the ground floor there is a fully fitted kitchen which has all the modern appliances you would need and the advantage of space for the large dining table so the cook need not miss out on all the fun. The bright and airy lounge has lovely views over Loch Ken and for the chillier evenings a large gas fired wood burning stove. Upstairs the three bedrooms are spacious, the master with an en-suite bathroom and there is a modern family bathroom.
Whilst The Byre @ Camp Douglas shares a communal courtyard to the front there is a private and fully enclosed rear garden with a summerhouse – the perfect place to sit and watch the sun go down over Loch Ken. Dalry is a small village with a local convenience store and an excellent pub and restaurant (booking advised). Set amidst some of the most stunning countryside from Bramble Cottage you have access to wonderful walking, the Southern Upland Way, a coast-to-coast path, passes through Dalry. With many quiet country lanes, cycling is ever popular and for the adventurous cyclists there are several of the world famous 7stanes mountain bike tracks within easy reach. The area is well recognised for its clear skies and is one of the 12 best stargazing sites in the world, and the first Dark Sky Park in the UK. At Bramble Cottage there is a lovely garden where you can sit outside and enjoy a spot of star gazing.
Why not take a short drive into the bustling market town of Castle Douglas, where you will find many independent little shops selling anything from delicious cakes and artisan food to jewellery and clothes. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from too. This unspoilt area of Southwest Scotland offers magnificent scenery, fine sandy beaches and rocky coves to explore. There are also many traditional fishing villages and harbour ports where you can wander round.

The house makes an ideal holiday base for exploring the rich history and countryside of Galloway and for comfortable relaxation in sumptuous surroundings. It is situated just a stone’s throw from Carlingwark Loch and its Lochside Park where there are fine countryside walks and a play area for children. Yet Craigvar House is just a few minutes’ walk from Castle Douglas’s wide range of amenities, including an array of independent shops selling produce and quality gifts, a theatre, swimming pool, library, golf course, pubs, and plentiful opportunities for eating out.
Craigvar House offers spacious, well-equipped accommodation. Leading off the attractive hallway are the drawing-room and dining-room, and a small boot and coat room. At the rear of the ground floor is the kitchen, off which is situated the ground floor shower room. The rear entrance leads onto the pretty, fully fenced, dog-secure garden. The staircase leads to a half-landing off which is a cloakroom and a double bedroom furnished with a kingsize bed. The stairs then lead up to the first floor landing off which are two large double bedrooms overlooking gardens opposite. One bedroom has a kingsize bed, the other has two single beds. Each room has its own en-suite bathroom, the first with shower, the second with bath and shower. There is a small study at the end of the landing. On the second floor is a small sitting-room with comfortable sofa and chairs, providing a quiet space separate from the main reception rooms. Leading off it is a walk-in cupboard, really useful for storing those pesky suitcases.
From Craigvar House the Solway coast is within a short drive, giving access to safe sandy beaches, dramatic cliff-top walks, and wonderful coastal scenery. Fishing opportunities abound whether it be sea, coarse or game. There is a large choice of further outdoor activities in the area including bird watching, cycling, golf, hill walking, sailing, shooting, stalking, wildlife trails and woodland walks. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including the National Trust’s Threave Gardens nearby.
