Chaffcutters (ref. UKC1406) and Wheelwrights (ref. UKC1407) were converted from an old stone barn, the properties still have a couple of clues to their past life. The well-appointed cottages, with their enclosed courtyard gardens are located in the hamlet of Kentisbury Ford.
Chapel Cottage (ref. HOOM) is a single storey, detached holiday cottage makes an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful North Devon countryside. The cottage has been thoughtfully converted, and the enclosed patio is an ideal suntrap from which to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
From here, you are never very far from the attractions that make north Devon a great holiday destination. Whether you are a couple with a dog or a young family, there is much to see and do in the local area. The stunning, sandy beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton are a must during your stay where you can learn to surf or hopefully, top up your tan. There are many other coves and bays at Combe Martin, Lee Bay and Hele Bay which are ideal for rock pooling. Towards Lynton and Lynmouth there is dramatic scenery as Exmoor meets the coast, from the plunging cliffs at Countisbury Head to the beauty of the Valley of the Rocks. There is the Victoria Cliff Railway connecting Lynton to Lynmouth and also access to the Southwest Coast Path. At Ilfracombe, there is bustling harbourside and the Tunnels Beaches. The regional town of Barnstaple has a good range of shops and amenities including the must-see historic Pannier market. For some real holiday excitement, a trip to Watermouth Castle, Combe Martin Wildlife Park or the Big Sheep will certainly make somebodies holiday. There are National Trust properties at Arlington, Knightshayes and Castle Drogo and the RHS gardens at Rosemoor are certainly worth the journey. Located in stunning Exmoor National Park and just 55 minutes from Exeter, this beautiful, semi-detached, Grade II thatched cottage is situated a few steps away from a pub, which is also owned by the cottage’s owner. Here you can indulge in some tasty fayre made with locally sourced fresh produce or simply pop along for a drink or two in traditional and comfortable surroundings.
The accommodation comprises three bedrooms on the first floor; a super kingsize and main bathroom with a clawfoot bath and a walk-in wardrobe, which are accessed via the first staircase on one side of the cottage, and bunk bedroom and double room, both benefiting from a ‘Jack and Jill’ style en-suite shower room, with a double size rain shower cubicle. These rooms are accessed via a quirky spiral-style staircase so some care should be taken going up and down. There are two characterful reception rooms, one with a double sofa bed and a Smart TV, and the other a comfortable snug where you can escape to and enjoy the gas wood burner. There’s a handy downstairs toilet and a utility room too. The kitchen has everything you’ll need for your stay including a Smeg coffee machine, toaster and kettle, and a Neff oven and combi microwave. Outside you’ll be able to enjoy the large lawned garden with a lovely patio where you can have al fresco meals or just relax with a drink. To the rear of the cottage there is also a handy bike store.
Exmoor National Park is a walker’s paradise. Or, if you’re more of an energetic type, you can run, cycle or indeed simply relax enjoying the magical night skies of Europe’s first ’Dark Sky Reserve’. The park also has abundant wildlife, including ponies, sheep and red deer that graze the open moorland, and overhead you might see falcons, buzzards and even the rare merlin. The area is also perfect for exploring North Devon with all its attractions, such as the many rugged coastal towns and quaint villages like beautiful Lynton and Lynmouth, and stunning cliff top sites such as Valley of the Rocks. The location is also perfect for exploring the rest of north Somerset, and the beautiful city of Exeter is just 55 minutes or so by car. Beach 11½ miles.

The surrounding area has many attractions waiting to be discovered, such as the local beach at Combe Martin where you can enjoy the stunning sunsets of the North Devon coast. On the door step is the South West Coast Path too, popular with walkers, and the surrounding area boasts other attractions such as Cairn Woodland Nature Reserve, Watermouth Bay and, the lovely Fuchsia Valley, Watermouth Castle and Theme Park and don’t forget the nearby town of Ilfracombe with its very own harbour and port which dates back to at least the 12th Century. here you can sample quality ice cream, fish and chips and visit various craft shops, plus Damien Hirst’s ‘Verity’ statue, which is a must see. Trips to Lundy Island, coastal cruises, fishing, sea-life safaris and diving are also all available from here. Take a trip on the Ilfracombe Princess and see seals, porpoises and sea birds nesting on the cliffs. Try your hand at sea fishing on Blue Fin or take an exhilarating tour of the amazing coastline on the Ilfracombe Sea Safari or on the Hampshire Rose, a former RNLI Lifeboat.
Combe Martin is also perfectly situated to the enjoy the countless other North Devon attractions such as the popular Tarka Trail which provides the unique opportunity to follow a disused railway line allowing you to enjoy some of Devon’s finest countryside and scenery stretching from Barnstaple through to Bideford and beyond. And then there’s stunning Exmoor National Park with its beautiful night skies, just 6 miles away and Lynton & Lynmouth, 13 miles to the northeast with its incredible sea views, rugged cliffs and amazing funicular cliff railway, which opened in 1890 and is the highest and steepest totally water powered railway in the world! Stepping inside, on the ground floor you will find a cosy lounge with wood burner, perfect for chillier evenings, and comfortable seating to relax in after a day exploring the area, together with Freeview TV. The wonderfully light and airy kitchen/diner comes well equipped with everything you need for a wonderful home-cooked meal, with an electric oven, gas 5 burner hob, and dishwasher. There’s also a utility room with a fridge/freezer, wine cooler, and washing machine.
Heading upstairs you will find the family bathroom with a P-shape bath and shower plus a heated towel rail. The bedrooms have all been decorated in calming colours for a restful night’s sleep. The master bedroom has a king size bed, bedroom two has a double while bedroom three has a single bed.
Outside, the south-facing garden, with two decks, is a great size and is mainly lawned, perfect for your two and four-legged family to let off some steam running around and playing games. Speaking of which, at the bottom of the garden you will find the games cabin with table tennis and a decked area with a table, chairs, a corner sofa, for relaxing, firepit and barbecue for your alvfresco dining! A lovely holiday home located just a short walk from Minehead’s town centre and beautiful seafront, with sandy beach and harbour, surrounded by shops and an award-winning Indian restaurant, 2-minute walk. Local pubs are a 5-minute walk giving you the option to leave the car on the driveway and explore on foot. Hire bikes, paddle boards and kayaks from Channel Adventures on the seafront.
Minehead Golf Course, founded in 1882, is Somerset’s oldest and is open all year round. Minehead is also a bustling seaside resort with plenty of things to do and there are many shops, bars, and restaurants to sample as well as three supermarkets within a 5-minute walk! Take time to explore, get lost and find hidden rivers, old-fashioned tea rooms and country pubs. The village of Dunster has its beach, plus its castle and cobbled streets are a must-do while here. Dunster by candlelight in December is a magical experience! Drive along the coast and spend time in Porlock, ride the cliff railway that links Lynton and Lynmouth or wander around Watchet. Elsie has been lovingly restored by her owners in 2020, to offer a wonderful holiday for families or friends, she is situated right by the West Somerset Railway line that runs from Minehead to Bishops Lydeard and also offers sea views from every room! Every detail has been considered to make your stay as perfect as possible. Head up the steps and through the door, where you will enter into the living/dining room, with comfortable sofas and dining table comfortably seating 6 people, off the living space is the very well equipped (and fabulous sized) kitchen with full cooking facilities as well as a full fridge/freezer, microwave and washer/dryer! Head down the narrow hallway to your sleeper cabins, one of which is a small double with sea and railway views plus a TV, while the other two bedrooms feature bunk beds (original but made safe for 21st century use!) both feature sea and track views, TVs and one has an XBox to keep the kids happy after a day exploring the beach or on Exmoor! At the end of the carriage is the shower room with a large shower. Outside you have a large grass area for games and relaxing, plus private parking. *Please note, the underside of the carriage is open and the working track can be accessed, please ensure that dogs are kept on a lead at all times and children are fully supervised while outside*
Blue Anchor is a wonderful seaside village, set between Minehead and Watchet, with a fabulous stretch of beach which is perfect for year round use and is also dog friendly at all times! The beautiful West Somerset Steam Railway which runs through Blue Anchor has a stop here and they offer wonderful trips as well as speciality trips with steam fairs, afternoon teas, candlelight dinners and the amazing Santa Express! Nearby, head to the medieval village of Dunster with its wonderful castle, spend a day at the arcades or shopping in Minehead, pop to Watchet and stroll around the Harbour or head inland onto Exmoor.

To the north, 14 miles away is the fossil hunting beach at Kilve, and the seaside resorts of Dunster, Burnham-on-Sea, Minehead and Watchet are all within easy reach. To the south, there is Lyme Regis, Sidmouth and Seaton just to name a few all on the south coast. The lovely cathedral and Bishop’s Palace at Wells, Dunster Castle, the county town of Taunton, and Street with its Clarks Village shopping outlet, are a short drive as are the glories of Exmoor National Park.
