The picturesque harbour towns of Newquay and Aberaeron offer unblemished beaches, restaurants, boutique shopping and art galleries that are waiting to be explored. Away from the coast, Ceredigion’s countryside is just as promising, with an array of charming market towns and historic castles dotted around the county. For an adventurous day out, take a short drive to the rugged Cambrian Mountains and explore the Cors Caron Nature Reserve, which flourishes with wildlife and the historic ruins of Strata Florida Abbey, which is one of Wales’ most important historical sites. The picturesque fishing town of Aberaeron is only six miles away with its large harbour encased by pastel-shaded Georgian houses. A short drive inland leads to the rural and traditional towns of Lampeter and Tregaron, where the Welsh language is mostly used by the locals. Tregaron feels almost untouched by the 21st century and is a bastion of the Welsh language and culture. The river running through the town centre leads to Cors Caron, a national nature reserve of peat bog which is one of the most impressive wildlife areas in Wales; home to rare marsh grasses, black adders, buzzards and even the occasional red kite. A perfect opportunity to discover the real Wales. Shops 3 miles, pub in village.

Overlooking the Cardigan Heritage Coast above the magical old smugglers’ cove of Cwmtydu (NT), this exceptionally well appointed property is ideally placed for enjoying the harbour and sandy beaches of popular and picturesque New Quay resort. The farm itself has 140 acres, and the farmland links up to the Ystwyth Cycle Trail which is over 16 miles long. Located near Tregaron, a small Welsh-speaking market town where guests can visit the famous Rhiannon Welsh Gold Centre that offers beautiful gifts and a fantastic art gallery. Tregaron is also famous for its trotting races, which are actually held here at Dolyrychain Farm (please check with owners for dates). The event is the largest of its kind and attracts over 10,000 visitors. This is a haven for walkers and cyclists with the Cambrian Mountains at the foot of the farm and the panoramic Pumlumon Mountains to the north. Visit the university town of Aberystwyth, home of the National Library of Wales, take a walk on the promenade or even catch the electric cliff railway on Construction Hill. For a magical day out take the narrow gauge railway from Aberystwyth to the heart of the Pumlumon Mountains where the destination will be the world famous Devils Bridge and Rheidol Falls. Situated just 5 minutes from Aberporth, Cardigan Bay and within easy reach to the whole of the beautiful Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline and coastal walks, The Cottage is a detached, converted stone holiday cottage peacefully set on a farm with a selection of alpacas, donkeys, goats, ducks and chickens. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 48 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. There is bike storage in the barn if you would like to bring your bikes.
Within a 15-minute drive, visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children.
Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. At the foot of the cliffs, a colony of Atlantic grey seals can be observed in their natural habitat. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the National Trust-managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to National Trust Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. Only the ruins remain of this striking 13th-century castle, whose vantage point overlooks the wonderful Teifi Gorge.
Also nearby is the town of Cardigan with its restored medieval castle. The Teifi Valley Railway is another experience for the visitor, a 2-mile journey offers wonderful views of the valley and countryside. Golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Beach 3½ miles. This wonderful example of a detached, single-storey, converted barn, adjacent to the owner’s home, dates back to circa 1810, and sits within the Hafod Forestry Commission Estate, which is a picturesque landscape occupying about 500 acres of the Ystwyth Valley and surrounding hills, some 15 miles inland from the Ceredigion coastline. Lovingly converted by the craftsman owner, Pendre Isa is an extremely spacious and beautifully furnished property for two people, boasting its own private decked terrace from where you can relax and enjoy the views and watch the red kites and buzzards circling overhead. From the doorstep of the barn, the estate can be explored on foot (maps are available for the five way-marked walks of varying length and difficulty) where there are streams, waterfalls and rustic bridges to discover. It provides an excellent base for exploring and taking part in activities such as canoeing, mountain biking, horse riding and walking, or just relaxing in a ‘get away from it all’ location. Nearby attractions include Devils Bridge, first built by monks in the 11th century and from where you can take the Vale of Rheidol steam train that meanders through the valley to the seaside town of Aberystwyth, the Silver Mountain Experience, an 18th-century silver-rich lead mine, and the Magic of Life Butterfly House. The kingsize bed is sure to leave you relaxed and rejuvenated. A visit to the colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron and Aberystwyth, with its pier, promenade and the steam. Visit the nearby National Trust site of Llanerchaeron an 18th-century estate and John Nash designed mansion house with cafe, woodland walks. Take an underground tour of the Dolaucothi Gold Mines, and John Nash designed mansion house train taking you to Devil’s Bridge and waterfalls. There are 60 miles of coastal path and plenty of lovely beaches and coves to explore. Alternatively, take the steam train to Devil’s Bridge and Waterfalls. Whatever you do or wherever you go, Ceredigion offers a warm welcome and a host of attractions and history. Befitting of a county that dates back over 1600, every town has a tale to tell and each village has a mystery to discover. Beach 10 miles.

In a rural setting, but less than 5 miles east of the seaside town of Aberystwyth, and with beautiful views of the Rheidol Valley, Maesbangor Farmhouse is a large property with lots of room to spread out. Previously two homes, but now combined into one, this spacious semi-detached house offers seven bedrooms sleeping up to 14 guests.

The imposing front of the house looks across the valley, and the front garden even boasts a hot tub where you can relax and take in the view. As you enter inside you will appreciate how ideal the farmhouse is for families or friends who want that extra space, or perhaps a quiet corner. There is a large beamed dining room with a feature wood burner. Leading off is a conservatory overlooking the enclosed terrace with benches and tables as well as a small lawn. The kitchen, complete with a breakfast area, is well-equipped with everything you need to cook up a tasty treat.

On the other side of the house there is a living room with 50" Freeview TV and wood burner, as well as an additional living room. Also on this side of the house you’ll find kitchen number two; smaller than the first but still well-equipped. There are two staircases that lead to the first floor, one leading to four bedrooms, all en-suite, and the other leading to three further bedrooms, one of which is en-suite, and a family bathroom. This is the perfect location for a family holiday, or a break with a group of friends.

Imagine yourself sitting on the the sandy beach overlooking Cardigan Bay, watching dolphins, or perhaps exploring one of the many market towns in the surrounding area. The Victorian resort of Aberystwyth, with its electric cliff railway, promenade and pier, is close by, as is the compelling Cambrian Mountains, dotted with hill sheep farms, forest and lakeland. Take a meandering train ride on what was once a working link between the local lead mines and the harbour; the Vale of Rheidol Railway now runs a steam train service through the Rheidol Valley to Devil’s Bridge, where you can see the famous Mynach Falls, Devil’s Punch Bowl and Jacob’s Ladder. When you’re done with exploring for the day, come back and relax at Maesbangor Farmhouse or visit the gastro pub, situated within half a mile of the house. Beach 6 miles.
