Padstow, EnglandLittle Tregarthen is a gem of a find in a quiet street in lovely Padstow, but only a short stroll to the bustling working harbour. Adjoining the owner’s home, but with a private decked area and off road parking, this house is finished to a very good standard indeed. The owners have left nothing to chance when thinking about style, comfort and quality even down to towelling robes.
Padstow, a jewel of a town on the north Cornwall coast, is in a central location in Cornwall, and has an abundance of great cafés, restaurants, local shops and stunning scenery. The National Lobster Hatchery Centre is right on the quay in Padstow and a fascinating insight into the conservation work they do for the sea life of the area.
There are also several vineyards close by, including the Camel Valley, with world class award-winning wines and Trevibyan Vineyard both worth a visit. Padstow has a rich heritage of fishing, and the working harbour is a great focal point with all narrow lanes leading to it. Sit and enjoy a pasty or local ice cream as the boats bob around. The town sits at the mouth of the Camel Estuary with views across to Rock, beautiful Daymer Bay and the famous Doom Bar, which a local beer is named after. You can catch a passenger ferry across the estuary to the village of Rock and walk across the golden sands. Walk along the Coastal Path to Polzeath, a small village with a great surfing beach. You’ll pass by the famous church at St Enedoc, which is the final resting place of Sir John Betjeman, the Poet Laureate.
The celebrity chef Rick Stein has many eateries in the town from a cookery school to fish and chip shop, a must for great fish and chips by the sea. Padstow has many cycle hire opportunities due to it being at the start of the Camel Trail, an 18-mile, off road, flat, multi-use trail that hugs the edge of the estuary into Wadebridge, a pretty market town, and before eventually reaching Bodmin inland. If its beaches you want, then there are many within a stroll from Little Tregarthen. Many more are just a short drive away, such as Constantine with its superb golf course, Treyarnon, Harlyn and Trevone, all stunning expanses of golden sand for that great day out by the sea. Once inside you are greeted with a bright and airy, open-plan living space with relaxing sofas to sink into, a cosy wood burner (with ‘starter pack’ provided) for those cooler evenings, and attractive floor and wall art unique to the property and evocative of Cornwall and its heritage. You will find lovingly restored furniture and repurposed features in the side tables and display units, turning function into fun! Lead on to the dining area, complete with impressive handmade wooden dining table and seating for ten guests, looking out onto the garden. The wall here is adorned with a fantastic map of the county, a further reminder of the wonders of this amazing region and its many attractions and places to explore! The adjoining kitchen has a small breakfast bar area and plenty of workspace and equipment for preparing breakfast or your evening meal.
There are five bedrooms all on one level, where the unique and upcycled theme continues, with solid pine furniture given a fresh modern look. A roomy family bathroom includes a bath, while a second bathroom features a walk-in shower.
Outside, an excellent decking area with table, chairs and barbecue offers the ideal space to enjoy morning coffee or evening meal al fresco. There is even a firepit!
You are spoilt for a choice of beaches here; Harlyn Bay Beach, just 3 miles away, offers a broad expanse of golden sand stretching far before you. Trevose Headland offers spectacular vistas, whilst further beaches at Treyarnon Bay and beautiful Porthcothan Beach are just a short drive away, with rock pools for all ages to explore! Visit Padstow, with its fabulous seafood restaurants, busy quayside and narrow streets, or vibrant Newquay, with its plethora of vibrant bars and restaurants, and scintillating surfing and water sports activities.
Away from the coast, Camel Valley Theme Park, the world-renowned Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan all offer fun days out, whilst Bodmin Moor is an atmospheric place, with mysterious rock formations and views as far as the eye can see. Tintagel, EnglandNewhaven is a beautifully presented, dog friendly, bungalow with a terraced garden, and a large deck and is ideal for a family with young children, the twin bedroom is pirate themed and there are a wealth of novel garden ornaments including a lobster pot and "smugglers den," a child’s playhouse. The dining conservatory creates an al fresco ambience of dining under the stars but remains cosy with underfloor heating, and winter evenings will be toasty warm in the dual aspect kitchen/living room with the lovely slate fireplace surrounding the wood burner.
Trebarwith Strand Beach is close by and at low tide a large expanse of golden sand is exposed, with plenty of rock pools and a number of caves, just be careful to always check the tide times. Tintagel is well worth a visit, cross the new suspension bridge to Tintagel Castle and Island where medieval fortifications combine a history of the dark ages with the legend of King Arthur to produce a wonderful day out with many different eateries and pubs to sample as a bonus. The coast path stretches along some of the most rugged cliffs in the southwest, where majestic promontories overlook secluded beaches with golden sands and crashing Atlantic surf. A quick drive will also take you to Boscastle, site of the infamous floods in 2004, or the traditional fishing village of Port Isaac where lovely narrow lanes lead to the charming harbour and beach that Port Isaac is so famous for. Turnpike Cottage is only a short, 5-minute walk down the hill to the pretty little harbour of Portscatho, where many artists have taken inspiration from the stunning location and superb light in the area. There are a number of delightful little galleries showcasing the work of various Cornish artists. The local public house is nestled in The Square and serves local ales and good pub grub all year round. Rosevine beach is dog friendly throughout the year and is just to the east of the village. It has beautiful golden sands and is over looked by the increasingly famous Hidden Hut.
