Saint Twynnells, WalesLast Barn is a beautiful conversion of a traditional Welsh barn, tucked away in rolling countryside within the Pembrokeshire National Park. This detached, secluded property is nestled at the end of a quiet country lane and was once part of Valast Hill Farm which dates to the early 19th century. Last Barn has been carefully restored to a high standard, retaining much of its original character.
Wonderful walks through Bosherton Lily Ponds and to the beaches of Barafundle and Broad Haven (part of the National Trust Stackpole Estate) are a few minutes’ drive away. A mile down a quiet country lane takes you to a permissive pathway across Castlemartin range and on to the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. Here is a stunning section of coastline featuring St Govan’s Chapel (a medieval church built into the cliff face) and, further on, the famous Green Bridge of Wales. Other nearby beaches include Freshwater West, which featured in several films, including Harry Potter, and West Angle Bay. The nearest, award-winning pub is only 2 miles. The historic walled town of Pembroke is 3 miles away and features a magnificent Norman castle, famous as the birthplace of Henry VII. The bustling coastal resort of Tenby is within easy reach and is renowned for its picturesque harbour, narrow cobbled streets and pastel painted Georgian houses. It has a variety of boutique gift shops, traditional pubs, highly acclaimed restaurants, the Oakwood Theme Park and Manor House Wildlife Park (as featured on TV). Llandysul, WalesThe name, the Plucking Barn originates from the days of old when the barn was used to prepare ducks and chickens. Today there is no trace of that, but instead you will be greeted by friendly owners who have created a modern and very comfortable holiday cottage, in an ‘upside down’ style to take advantage of the gorgeous views. On the ground floor there are two bedrooms, one a double and the other a twin. They both have access to the lovely shower room with walk-in shower. There is thermostatically controlled radiators upstairs, and underfloor heating on the ground floor. Upstairs, the living area is open plan with a spacious modern and well equipped kitchen and dining space which leads to the living area where there are two comfy leather sofas and chair. You can sit here and take full advantage of the amazing countryside views or step out through the patio doors onto the balcony and enjoy sitting at the table with a coffee or a glass of something chilled and breathe in the fresh Welsh air. The location of the Plucking Barn makes it an ideal base for day trips around west and mid Wales. There are over 60 miles of glorious coastline in Cardigan Bay. There are lots of beaches and coves and many are dog friendly all year round if you are bringing your pet on holiday with you. The pretty coastal resort of New Quay and the colourful Georgian harbour town Aberaeron can be easily reached within 30 minutes’ drive. You’re very likely to see dolphins in the bay and there are boat trips available to watch them and the other wildlife. The Victorian seaside and university town of Aberystwyth is also within easy reach and here you’ll find a traditional pier, promenade and the old electric cliff railway to the summit of Constitution Hill where you can enjoy a really panoramic view of the bay.
If outdoor activities are your thing, there are plenty of options for walkers and cyclists of all abilities as well as horse riding, canoeing and more. Families can enjoy a day out at the National Trust Dolaucothi Gold Mines at Pumsaint, the Silver Mountain Experience (silver-lead mines) at Ponterwyd or the red kite feeding centre at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian. There are further gardens, walking paddocks and a central outside hot and cold water hose for muddy dogs, boots or bikes. The owners, who live on-site along with their dogs and animals, are available should you need any help. You are welcome to join them for a walk or cycle to the nearby St Catherine’s Oratory or ‘Pepperpot’, as its known locally, with many options to venture further afield should you wish.
Outdoor pursuits on the island are well catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf. There are numerous attractions to discover for all ages. West Fells Cottage is situated in the village of Rowrah which is located on the fringe of the Lake District National Park between Cockermouth and Ennerdale. It offers easy access to explore the Western Lake District and coast, and has a couple of pubs and restaurants nearby. Your nearest lake is Ennerdale Water which is less than 4 miles away. Ennerdale is widely regarded as one of the most unspoilt areas of the Lake District National Park, and thanks to this it is teaming with wildlife including indigenous red squirrels, ospreys and buzzards. Annan, ScotlandThis beautiful 19th century historic property, with spacious rooms, has been sympathetically renovated to retain many of its original features whilst providing a luxury holiday location whatever your needs. With an accessible kitchen with rise and fall counters x-y ceiling track hoists in two of the five large bedrooms and one wet room, electric profiling beds in three bedrooms, two large specialised wet rooms with level-access showers, low level basin and emergency pull chord alarm system, not to mention the lift, this house caters for everyone no matter what their everyday needs may be. The house and grounds were built on the moat bank of an 11th century Motte-and-bailey castle, the original seat of the ’De Brus’ family who were the ancestors of ’Robert the Bruce’ who was featured in the iconic film ’Braveheart’. The other side of the moat bank can still be seen from the peaceful sensory garden.
The Moat House is only a very short walk from the main street of Annan where you can enjoy a range of pubs and restaurants, or take in a film at the local cinema. There is plenty to do in the area with forests and coastal walks. There are lots of castles to explore in Dumfries and Galloway but Caerlaverock Castle is particularly interesting being a moated, triangular castle. In comparison though Drumlanrig Castle is a very impressive building with 120 rooms, 17 turrets and towers, and it is equally stunning inside, being filled with beautiful French furniture and an art collection which includes Rembrandt’s Old Woman Reading. Mabie Farm Park is always popular with families, from feeding farm animals, a ride on the ‘Choo Choo Express’, a gentle paddle around the boating lake to racing quad bikes, there is fun for kids of all sizes. Alternatively Gretna Gateway Outlet Village can provide hours of retail therapy. It was while living and working in nearby Dumfries that JM Barrie befriended a local family, and their adventures inspired him to write Peter Pan, hopefully your family will have equally fantastic adventures on your holidays.
