Within easy access of the Northumberland coast, Etive Cottage is a charming, detached, single-storey holiday cottage with an enclosed garden area especially designed for pets. “Give your dogs the holiday they deserve” is the owner’s motto, and up to four well-behaved dogs are more than welcome at Etive. Set behind electric gates and with secure off-street parking, this property is located by the A1 which will take you northwards to the historic town of Berwick and beyond or southwards to historic Alnwick and its pretty neighbouring villages. Whilst the border-town of Berwick is known as ‘the last town in England’, Alnwick is famous for its ancient castles, gardens and cobbled streets. This part of the country draws visitors from around the world to savour its natural landscape and enjoy some of the many local outdoor activities available in the area. Historic locations also feature prominently as both Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne’s Holy Island are close by. Nature lovers will want to head out for the Farne Islands (accessible by seasonal boat-trip from the village of Seahouses) to see the colourful puffin colonies. Beach 9½ miles. Bramble Cottage is situated in the highly sought after traditional fishing village of Craster. The accommodation is immaculately presented throughout and enjoys a lovely homely ambience. The tastefully furnished living room, which has a wood burner for those cosy nights in, leads to a separate dining room with traditional hatch connecting to the kitchen. All three beautifully presented bedrooms are situated on the first floor along with a pristine family bathroom. The cottage sits at the end of a terrace only a gentle stroll from Craster sea shore. The lovely garden is full of mature shrubs and flowers and has a patio area suitable for dining al fresco. There is also a gorgeous summer house (The Beach Hut), an idyllic spot to snuggle in and relax. Bramble Cottage is a mere gentle stroll from the seashore of Craster. This picturesque coastal village is home to the renowned ‘Craster Kipper’; a smoked fish exported to food lovers across the country. Bramble Cottage has a private and gated drive for one vehicle only. If guests plan to bring a second vehicle or have visitors then the only option for this is the public car park, which is 220 yards away by foot and which costs £6.50 per day per car to park. This car park will become busy during peak periods, and there is no other public parking in the village.
There is a small, pretty harbour close by with a view northward along the rocky shore to the spectacular ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. Explore the 20 miles of Northumberland Heritage Coastline recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with its walking trails and cycling routes. The welcoming village of Embleton is only 3 miles north with its wide sweep of golden sandy beach which has won the public poll of ‘Beach of the Year’ in the 2017 BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards. Beadnell Bay is a further 4 miles north and a popular destination for water-sports enthusiasts, including sailing, sea kayaking, wind surfing and scuba diving. Two miles further up the coastline is the traditional fishing port of Seahouses, where boat trips to the nearby Farne Islands, famous for its bird sanctuaries and seal colony, depart regularly from its harbour. The picture perfect village of Bamburgh, snuggled in the shadow of its majestic castle is a further 3 miles north. Just 7 miles inland from Bramble Cottage is the bustling market town of Alnwick, with its own dramatic castle (and film location for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Academy). Visitors can enjoy a trip to Alnwick Garden, a spectacular interpretation of a formal garden including the Grand Cascade waterfall and restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe. Located close to Whitley Bay and Tynemouth with stunning beaches, bars and restaurants, this absolutely charming detached bungalow offers a mix of tasteful decor to provide a lovely base for up to six people. With a cosy wood burner and pretty rear enclosed garden, the cottage is set on the owners award-winning arable and beef farm. With chickens, horses and some pet sheep, children and, of course adults are welcome to visit the animals once the owner has explained the workings of the farm. A real bonus is the quirky little shepherds hut to the side of the cottage which is perfect for sitting in and watching the sunsets, chilled with a book or glass of wine, it’s a lovely extra. The owners have given attention to detail to provide the comforts in this homely property, which is all on one level. The two gardens for relaxing are lovely if you want to stay in or a bonus to come back to after a day out exploring where you can admire some countryside views. Most of the windows have views of either animals, countryside or the garden.
There are ample supermarkets, local shops, and restaurants all within a few minutes drive and the Metro is easily reached for exploring further afield. Within a few minutes are plenty of village pubs and only a little further you have Tynemouth with award-winning beaches and Whitley Bay, both with lovely promenades and cafés. There really is something for everyone in and around the location no matter what your age, the whole of Northumberland is easily reached from here. You can happily spend a day in Alnwick visiting the famous castle and exploring the cobbled streets or indeed keep travelling and visit the wonderful heritage coastline peppered with castles and friendly villages. Wherever you go along this part of the county you will be guaranteed a real friendly ’Geordie’ welcome, after all Northumberland was voted the best place to holiday in the 2018 British Travel Awards. Nestled away in Northumberland along a country lane and with views across open fields, Vindomora Country Lodges are an ideal place to enjoy a super holiday. Coria Lodge (ref UKC4416) has been adapted to accomodate wheelchair users, with disabled parking, extra wide ramp access, widened doorways, raised electrical sockets and hoist facilities. The low level entry bathroom has a large shower with bi-folding doors allowing wheelchair access, a grab rail and raised toilet. Each detached lodge also offers a private, 6-seater hot tub (Coria Lodge, ref UKC4416, has a hoist rail system installed) and garden area with garden furniture for sitting out and enjoying the location. These properties are for families and couple bookings only, bookings for party purposes such as stag or hen parties are not accepted.
Perfectly situated near to the banks of the River Derwent with a boat house and fishing permits available for a small fee, guests who enjoy river fishing will be spoilt for choice. Also just a few hundred yards from the Derwent Walkway as well as a variety of established public footpaths, walks and cycling routes, there is no better base for enjoying and exploring the local area. Then leading further out into County Durham, Northumberland, the Northumberland National Park and the stunning North Pennines. Only half a mile from the village of Ebchester, there are plenty of amenities and facilities right on the doorstep. A local village pub, excellent restaurants and a village shop are at the heart of this thriving community and within easy walking distance from the lodges. Golf lovers will be able to book a place on the famous Slaley Hall course just 15 miles away or the closer course at Consett which is just 3 miles away. The cathedral city of Durham, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is only 15 miles away and well worth a visit.

Steeped in history, the county of Northumberland is home to the historic Hadrian’s Wall which spans 73 miles from coast to coast and is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. The market town of Hexham is a 15 mile drive away and offers plenty of facilities and amenities including a leisure centre, bowling alley, supermarkets, shops and a farmers market, as well as the historic attractions including Hexham Abbey and Hexham Old Gaol. Amber Waves is a tastefully furnished, semi-detached property, located in the traditional seaside village of Seahouses. The property underwent a total makeover in 2020 and offers stylish accommodation. From the entrance porch there is a generous living room with a cosy wood burner, leading to the kitchen/diner. A newly revamped shower room and utility area is also on the ground floor. There is a rear door from the kitchen to a fully enclosed patio garden where there are colourful beach huts offering ample storage for outdoor equipment, including bikes and diving equipment. There are three bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor. The largest of the bedrooms has two sets of adult size bunk beds, making Amber Waves able to accommodate up to eight guests.
Seahouses offers a wide array of tearooms, restaurants, pubs and shops within walking distance of Amber Waves. Boat trips run from the nearby harbour to the Farne Islands, famous for their nesting seabirds and grey seal colonies. The picture postcard village of Bamburgh, dominated by its majestic castle, is only 2 miles north, where there is a wide expanse of golden, and often empty sandy beaches. The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island, can be seen from the beach and is accessible via a causeway twice daily. A further 2 miles up the coastline brings you to Waren Mill, which is steeped in history. Once an important port, its harbour has long since disappeared, silted up beneath the sands of the estuary. Budle Bay is a bird sanctuary and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is home to thousands of sea and land birds, making this location a haven for bird watchers. The historic market town of Alnwick, with its own castle, offers many facilities, just a short drive inland. Nearby, Leaplish Waterside Park has a hop on/hop off ferry, which takes you all around the water to admire the stunning scenery with a visitor centre, bird of prey centre and bar with outdoor picnic area, as well as a swimming pool and spa, ideal for a few hours of relaxation. The historic town of Hexham with its pretty Abbey and cobbled streets is only 25 miles away. Head north over the border into Scotland and discover some of the Scottish towns and villages. Nearby, Bellingham has a post office and shops, as well as a golf course, and is only a few miles. The Friendliest Port - Amble is a bustling fishing town and working port situated just one mile south of Warkworth Village, on the Coastal Route through Northumberland. Amble is one of the few places on the Northumberland coast where you have no need to get in the car, everything is on your doorstep. With a good range of small, mostly independent shops, including a great little artisan bakery, excellent butchers, local seafood bought straight from the harbour, a superb Italian and an Indian restaurant, award-winning seafood restaurants and one of the best traditional fish and chip shops in the North East on the quayside, it’s a fascinating little fishing port. Within five minutes you can walk to Little Shore Beach with its row of pretty pastel coloured beach huts that you can rent from the Harbour Master for a round £20.00 per day. Two minute’ s walk from Number 8 will take you to The Braid which is a grass area ideal for walking dogs which runs adjacent to Amble Marina and continues along the footpath past Coquet Yacht Club towards the village of Warkworth with its impressive castle. There’s a local Sunday market held every week on the old quayside, which is lovely to wander around as well as a little ‘Harbour Village’ with tiny boutique-style independent shops operating out of pods resembling old fishermens’ huts.
The views from the quayside are spectacular – of the estuary, impressive Warkworth Castle, Coquet Island and of course the beautiful sea, and the walk along the harbour front to the interesting Marina is just lovely – follow it with lunch or dinner in one of the super little eateries on the quayside.
