History buffs should make time to explore the Hanseatic Quarter of Old Kings Lynn and the Sandringham, Holkham and Houghton Estates. The historic hill top village of Hawnby is a designated Conservation Area of traditional stone and pantiles roof cottages, with the local pub just a short walk away. What could be more romantic than an escape to the country in a bespoke shepherd’s hut, enjoying a home cooked meal with a glass of wine out on the decking as the light fades and the colours of the sunset ebb across the sky.
Dreamer’s Hut is only 6 miles from Helmsley, one of Yorkshire’s finest market towns. This renowned market town is where the North York Moors and the Howardian Hills meet, offering fine historic views and countryside with a reputation for great Yorkshire hospitality. The market square is a meeting point for walkers, cyclists and locals alike. There are also many shops, cafés, eateries including Michelin starred restaurants, an open-air swimming pool, walled garden, castle, bird of prey centre, microbrewery, two abbey ruins and the stately home of Duncombe Park.
The Dreamer’s Hut is named after ’The Hawnby Dreamers’ - three local shepherds who in the mid-1700s, fell asleep whilst working in the fields on a hot day in the adjacent valley of Ladhill Ghyll, of which the hut overlooks. The shepherds awoke to discover they had each had the same vivid dream of spiritual awakening and being called to change their lives for the better. The three subsequently walked to Newcastle to hear the preaching of the famous John Wesley and converted to Methodism, bringing this faith back to Hawnby. For a change of scenery, head to the enchanting Chew Valley Lakes, a tranquil haven for nature lovers. If you’re craving adventure and exhilaration, the Mendip Activity Centre is your ultimate destination. Test your skills and push your limits with a range of thrilling activities such as rock climbing, archery, and off-road biking. Within an hour’s drive, you can reach Bristol and Bath. Explore Glastonbury’s Abbey and Tor, Wells’ cathedral and Bishop’s palace, or Cheddar’s famous caves and gorge. All within 30 minutes and promising delightful adventures. A walker’s haven, with Offas Dyke and Mortimer’s Trail, further afield are the Black Mountains and the magnificent scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Riding, golfing, fishing and canoeing are available locally. Hay-on-Wye and Brecon are well worth a visit, also within easy driving distance are Ludlow, Hereford and Leominster. Follow in the footsteps of Elizabeth I and spend some time exploring the beautiful Cinque port market town of Rye. In 1573 she bestowed the title Rye Royale. Stay in this well thought out and stylish holiday cottage which is just a 6 minute walk from the centre of the town, with its large selection of pubs, restaurants and cafes. You could discover for yourself why many authors, musicians, artists and celebrities have chosen to settle here. Rye is one of the best preserved medieval towns in England, despite being the haunt of the notorious smugglers, The Hawkhurst Gang. Visit The Mermaid Inn, their famous hideout, where the cellars date back to 1156. Visit the Rye Museum and climb St Mary’s Tower for breathtaking views across to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and Winchelsea. See Lamb House, the home of Henry James and later E. F. Benson, and where they filmed the recent production of ’Mapp and Lucia’. Another great film location is Camber Sands and going in the other direction towards Hastings where ’Foyles War’ was filmed. The Old Dairy is within 3 miles of Thorndon Country Park which has 500-acres of diverse habitats, good for horse riding, walking, cycling and fishing. Enjoy a trip along the River Waveney or River Alde, taking in the waterside scenery and looking out for some of the region’s rare wildlife. Visit the coastal resorts of Aldeburgh and Walberswick, both 31 miles, and Southwold, 33 miles, or enjoy fish and chips at the beachside café by Dunwich Heath (National Trust), 30 miles. Dogs are allowed on most of the Suffolk coast’s beaches, the most popular stretches have restrictions over the summer months.
The National Trust site of Sutton Hoo can be found at Woodbridge, 26 miles away, where you can discover the story of the Anglo-Saxons at the burial ground of the kings. Just 4 miles away is the small historic town of Eye, which has an interesting range of independent shops, antique and interior shops, a deli, butcher, cafés and pubs. Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens is 6¼ miles away, or visit the market town of Diss, 6 miles, with its supermarkets, shops, cafés, golf course, leisure centre with swimming pool, and direct rail links to London. Other places to visit include the medieval town of Bury St Edmunds, 19 miles, and the vibrant city of Norwich, 27 miles, with its castle, cathedral, shops, market square and pubs. Beach 31 miles. The dog-friendly pebble and sand beach, protected by rock islands, is great for crabbing, fishing, bathing or potholing, and it is perfectly located for walking to nearby Bognor Regis. Middleton-on-Sea has pubs, local shops, takeaways and restaurants within easy walking distance, and Littlehampton or Bognor has further eateries, as well as small beachside cinemas, within a 5-minute drive. There is plenty to do in the area, with Arundel close by, famous for its castle, lanes with artefacts, books and antique shops, plus Wildfowl and Wetlands Wildlife Centre, Pulborough Brooks RSPB and popular beaches at The Witterings, Worthing and Bognor. Also the easy driving distance to Chichester with its cathedral, festival theatre, leisure facilities and Goodwood or Fontwell Races, or Midhurst with Cowdray Polo and shops. There are many scenic walks including in the South Downs National Park. Also within easy driving distance (or train ride) is the cosmopolitan city of Brighton to the east, and Portsmouth to the west, which has the Spinnaker Tower, ferry trips to the Isle of Wight and designer retail shopping. National Trust homes and gardens, such as Goodwood House, Parham Park, Royal Pavilion, Petworth House, Stanstead Park and East Dean can all be easily reached. The conservatory provides a lovely sunny room to dine or doze in on a warm summer’s day, with gorgeous views over the paddocks. After dinner you can curl up, open a book or simply enjoy each other’s company in this relaxed country retreat. If you would like use of a freestanding fridge/freezer please advise before you arrive so access to it can be organised.
Why not bring your horses? This cottage benefits from its own stabling on site and, what’s more, the conservatory looks out over the paddocks where your horses can graze. Equestrian facilities are on offer for up to three horses (by prior arrangement at an additional cost): DIY livery including stabling, grazing paddocks, a lockable tack room and large lorry/horsebox parking on site. Centrally located for all things equestrian: hunts, several competition centres such as Coombelands,Hickstead, Goodwoord, polo clubs (Cowdray, Knepp and Hurtwood), flat racing, point to points at Parham or just hacks (including on the beach). You can explore the countryside on horseback as well as walking and/or cycling in the area.
