With a sitting/dining room with two seater sofa, armchair and dining table, a separate well-equipped kitchen with butler sink downstairs, and a bright bedroom with hanging space and drawers and shower room upstairs, The Twitten blends original features with bijou style to retain the charm of this 18th-century building. There is a communal garden at the rear of the property accesed through the kitchen, and a private garden for the cottage also available just beyond.
The name ’Twitten’ derives from the old Sussex word meaning a path between walls or hedges. As you walk through the arched passageway into this quiet haven, you will hear the bubbling millstream which fed the old mill just up the road. Surrounded by countryside, right on the edge of the South Downs National Park and with the South Downs Way only a mile away, there is good access for walks up onto the hills right on the doorstep.
With the centre of Steyning and it’s convenient amenities a few steps away, The Twitten is a great base for walkers looking to stretch their legs!

Ideal walking territory, with footpaths from the doorstep, or stroll beside the Royal Military Canal, which stretches from almost Hastings to Hythe. Bring your binoculars and head towards Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, which offers five bird watching hides with easy access - hear the nightingale sing in the springtime. The comedian Spike Milligan’s headstone can be spotted in the church yard in Winchelsea, with the immortalized words ’I told you I was ill!’ Take a swim at Camber Sands or Winchelsea Beach, discover 4000-year-old fossilized forests or spot a shipwreck along the Hastings coast. This delightful barn dating from 1860 has a stormy history – in the great hurricane of 1987 it was totally demolished. Rebuilt two years later using many of the original beams, it was reborn into a luxurious and stylish property. On hot summer days enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside from the patio, which looks out over rolling countryside and is often frequented by the neighbouring chickens and geese! Or enjoy an alfresco meal or BBQ of an evening, while watching the evening sun sink in the sky.

The village of Herstmonceux is just ½ a mile away and has pubs and a restaurant. Herstmonceux Castle and gardens are close by and are home to the Observatory Science Centre, offering both adults and children some hands-on science, amongst the domes and telescopes of a world famous astronomical observatory. See the beautiful 7-acre gardens at Michelham Priory, or visit Rudyard Kipling’s home at Batemans (NT), and Charleston, home to the Bloomsbury set. The beach is can be reached within 8 miles at either Eastbourne or Cooden. Trains can be boarded via Polegate, giving access to Brighton or London for additional sightseeing. A trip to picturesque Rye enables visitors to sample local foods at the Wednesday morning farmers market which is held at Strand Quay. By taking a stroll along the cobbled streets, there is also the chance to buy a memento from one of the many independently-owned shops and boutiques, art galleries and potteries - or even start Christmas shopping from the wide selection of goods available! Also worth a visit are Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Camber Sands and Camber Castle – this area of saltmarsh protects some very special wildlife, and footpaths lead to four birdwatching hides. The picturesque market town of Battle makes for an enjoyable day out, as well as Hastings, the Sealife Centre and Pevensey Castle (where the Romans invaded). The area is also well known for its local vineyards including Chapel Down and Sedlescombe. A trip to Tenterden - often referred to as the Jewel of the Weald - is an alternative and, for garden lovers, Sissinghurst (National Trust) is not to be missed. Further National Trust places to visit include Smallhythe Place, Scotney Castle and Bodiam Castle. Day trips to France are possible with the Channel Tunnel a mere 30-minute drive. The property is well thought out, with the bedrooms at either end of the property, with the living areas in between, giving complete privacy to guests. The spacious yard may be shut off to contain dogs or children. Excellent walks, a vista of stunning views and carp fishing by arrangement with the Estate are available. Bird watching can also be arranged with a local expert. Local attractions include ‘Batemans’, Rudyard Kipling’s home and Sarah Raven’s cutting garden. The historic town of Rye is 30 minutes, Battle, 10 minutes, Tunbridge Wells, 30 minutes and Brighton, 45 minutes.
