As the name suggests, Drovers Cottage was formerly a place of rest for drovers (modern day livestock transporters), who travelled hundreds and hundreds of miles with their animals and needed somewhere to rest. The group of fir trees, which still remain to this day, were an easily recognisable landmark even from afar. The fields surrounding the cottage are of archaeological interest, as they were used as Roman camps and often oyster shells can be found, these were brought in barrels from the coast for the Roman warriors to eat, and they tossed the shells into the fields.
Having been totally renovated, Drovers Cottage offers tasteful and well-presented accommodation, and is within easy walking distance to the quaint thatched-roof village, with its shop, beautiful church and two pubs serving good food. This picturesque village is steeped in history, it has a bronze burial in the parish, which dates back to 2000BC. The village was part of the Royal Manor, belonging first to King Alfred the Great, then later William the Conqueror, which is recorded in the Domesday Book.
Within easy reach are the South Downs, Portsmouth, Winchester Cathedral, Southampton with its maritime history, the New Forest, Chichester, beaches at the Witterings or Hayling Island, the Watercress steam train, Jane Austen’s house, Gilbert White’s house and Birdworld. London is just an hour by train from nearby Petersfield. Seasonal fishing available in a small lake close by. Shops ¼ mile.

Although in a rural setting, many towns and picturesque villages are within an easy drive. There is an award-winning farm shop about a 10-minute walk away, which has local produce and a licenced café. There is also a pub serving good food just under a mile away. For the outdoor enthusiast, riding, cycling or strawberry picking are all nearby, as well as a popular water sports park. Visit Moors Valley Country Park which has orienteering, cycle hire, golf, forest Segway, walking groups, canoeing, petanque and craftmaking. There is a fishing lake close by.

The New Forest National Park provides miles of open scenic heath and woodland for walking, riding and cycling, as well as a network of footpaths and bridle paths. You can often find ponies, donkeys and cattle freely roaming. The charming town of Fordingbridge which has a host of shops, cafés and eateries, and the gentle flowing River Avon, is also nearby. Ringwood also has a good selection of shops and restaurants, and is about a 15-minute drive away. Weaver’s Lodge is convenient for road links to the cathedral cities of Winchester and Salisbury, as well as for visiting Christchurch Harbour and the coast with Poole and Bournemouth. All the barn conversions have high vaulted ceilings and plentiful beams with spacious open-plan living areas. All have rustic concrete floors with rugs and are furnished using natural woods of differing origins. Outside, there is a decked area for each property, a shared enclosed courtyard with raised planting beds where vegetables, herbs and fruit grow, and a fire pit, an outdoor pizza oven and barbeque. Discover scenic walks from the door, Midgham Farm Copse lies at the end of a track within 40 acres of woodland along the Avon Valley path, which leads all the way from Christchurch to Salisbury. For those that like the outdoor lifestyle there is on-site archery, axe throwing and fishing in the River Avon (licence required). Nearby there is horse riding, and the New Forest Water Park. For those bringing dogs, there are plenty of excellent walks all around.
