Pickering is a delight - old fashioned friendliness and an unhurried pace of life combine with charming old inns, 12th-century castle, museums, and remarkable medieval frescoes in the local church, and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway takes visitors on a nostalgic journey through spectacular heather-clad moorland scenery to Grosmont. City of York 26 miles. Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (NT), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few treasures to discover. York offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. On the east coast lie Scarborough and Bridlington, the picturesque fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, and Staithes, and the fascinating old port of Whitby, with its Captain Cook connections, as well as 3 miles of sandy beaches and a colourful harbour, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away offering excellent shopping and family entertainment. Closer to home, visitors can visit Pickering’s swimming-pool which is just a 3 minute walk away, good cycling in Dalby Forest, as well as forest walks, fishing, pony trekking and golf.
The cottages have been converted with great flair by the owners, Mike and Sue Kitching, from the outbuildings of Hungate House. The delightful setting includes eight secluded gardens, courtyards and an orchard, as well as an enclosed play area with basket swing and wendy house for children. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful, and have been well kept, to ensure a relaxing environment. They are a real haven in a lovely Yorkshire town. Each cottage retains much character, with old stone arches, fireplaces and beams carefully retained. Immaculately maintained, warm, clean and superbly well-equipped with free high speed Wi-fi, these cottages are truly a ‘home from home’. No wonder so many visitors return time and again. The owners provide plenty of helpful information on the huge choice of places to visit, as well as menus from the local restaurants. Hungate is best summed up by a visitor who wrote, "There was nothing more we could have wished for in a holiday home. We loved the fire, the free logs and little touches such as fresh flowers – it felt like home. The children loved the freedom of the gardens and could not wait to get home from our excursions! We loved coming and going through the heavy black gate into an oasis in this nice town."

Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War I army bunkers are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks. There is a golf course and driving range in Brotton, 6¾ miles away, and at Scaling Reservoir, 7¼ miles, there is sailing and fishing. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country, or visit Whitby and its famous abbey which is 11 miles away.

Eldin Hall Cottages are set in a peaceful area and have been added more recently to the restored old Victorian waterworks. The four cottages have their own enclosed decked patios with garden furniture, and The Gatehouse has its own enclosed private lawned garden. There is also a shared garden with a fantastic play area for the children. The owners, who just 10 minutes away, will be there to greet guests whenever possible, and are available any time to provide information and assistance when it is required.
Situated between Cayton and Cayton Bay, the cottages are an ideal base to visit the east coast, North York Moors and the Yorkshire Wolds. The beach at Cayton Bay is less than a mile away (2 miles by road) and just a little further up the coast is the popular seaside town of Scarborough. The resorts of Filey, Flamborough Head and Bridlington are just a short drive away. The walks along the clifftops are spectacular and form part of the Cleveland Way walk. The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton Cliffs attracts visitors from worldwide and is just a short drive from the cottages. Here you can see puffins, kittiwakes and lots of other migrating seabirds. Not to be missed during your stay (as it’s always voted as one of the top ten cities to visit) is the wonderful city of York which is less than an hour away by car, or the train is direct from Scarborough. Situated just a mile outside the famous and charming village of Goathland, Tilly’s Cottage has the best of both worlds; easy access to all the area has to offer and peace and quiet however busy it is in the village. The owner has also provided use of two Pendleton electric bikes for guests use - a fun and easier way to explore Goathland, Darnholme, Beck Hole, the ’Roman Road’ and perhaps even Egton.
Tilly’s Cottage is part of Thornhill Farm, a working moorland sheep farm, which is known to go back to at least the early 17th century when it was sold by James I. Tilly’s Cottage itself was part of the Victorian development in the 1860s and retains many of its original features like the low beams, open range fire and ’coffin drop’. This traditionally decorated, peaceful, homely and deceptively large cottage is surrounded by fields and open moorland and is both a wonderful place to relax and a great base for further explorations. One of the first floor bedrooms and the second floor bedroom each have wonderful moorland views.
Known to millions as ’Aidensfield’ from the Yorkshire television series ’Heartbeat’, there is much to recognise in Goathland, and Tilly’s Cottage itself was used many times in the filming. Beyond Goathland lies Whitby with its beautiful harbour, abbey ruins, cliff-top golf, fish and chips and story of Dracula. Both Whitby and the charming town of Pickering can be reached by the steam train from Goathland, which runs alongside one of Thornhill’s fields, enabling guest to take unique close-up pictures of the trains steaming along. Situated on a working farm, this detached holiday cottage has far reaching countryside views over the Hovingham Estate in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Enjoy dining al fresco on the patio area in the ¼-acre lawned garden, or relax beside the wood burner on winter evenings. The market town of Helmsley is 10 miles away, and a 30-minute scenic drive to the ancient city of York. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

Situated in the picturesque market town of Helmsley, this imposing detached house with large gardens is comfortably furnished. An ideal holiday location for exploring coastal resorts such as Runswick Bay, Robin Hoods Bay and Whitby. Enjoy walks through the forests and North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Set in the beautiful grounds of the owners’ home, these four holiday properties (E5118, E5119, E5120 and E5551) are tastefully decorated and finished to a high standard, retaining many original features. Guests have the use of the large, landscaped gardens with ponds, waterfall and river frontage, plus private fishing. The quaint village of West Burton in which these cottages are situated, nestles in the Walden Valley among the beautiful Wensleydale countryside, and is well known as one of the loveliest villages in the Dales with a large village green, market cross, Burton Force waterfall and no through traffic; it has a truly traditional feel with a shop and a pub serving food. An excellent base for touring throughout the Yorkshire Dales, with the bustling market towns of Hawes and Leyburn only 10 miles. Bolton Castle, the Black Sheep Brewery and The Wensleydale Creamery are all within easy reach. For the walker, there is easy access from the village onto open moors and fells. For family days out, don’t miss The Forbidden Corner gardens and Lightwater Valley theme park. Shop and pub serving food 500 yards.

This lovely three bedroom apartment is in a great location, with views over the estuary and towards the abbey, just a pleasant stroll away from the centre of Whitby. Picturesk is a first floor apartment where you can spend many an hour sat at the window watching the boats go by, or seeing the children learn to canoe. The communal grounds have some lovely sitting-out areas, as well as a small playground for the little ones. It’s not far to walk into the centre along the side of the estuary, you’ll find that you hardly need the car as it’s a perfect spot to get to all the amenities and see the sights of Whitby.
Walk up the famous Whitby Abbey, with its 199 steps to get to the top. You will see many children counting them as they take each step. The cobbled streets are full of little shops, especially the Whitby Jet jewellery shops. This black gemstone became very popular when Queen Victoria wore it when mourning for her husband. The black jewellery also attracts goths when they hold their famous weekend in Whitby.
The North Yorkshire Moors are on the doorstep, and the Cleveland Way passes through Whitby, so this is a great base for ramblers or hardened walkers. There’s so much to see and do, but if you do want to step outside of Whitby, why not go down the coast to Scarborough, or inland to the town of Pickering, famous for its steam railway. For all ages, Whitby is the perfect holiday spot.

Situated in the heart of the vibrant market town of Pickering, this charming cottage has been lovingly restored with great care and attention to detail. Visitors can now enjoy all modern day facilities amidst the ambience of a traditional country cottage. The beamed living room has a lovely multi-fuel burner, perfect for relaxing after day’s out walking or sightseeing. Perfect for a family holiday, the owner has provided a number of baby/toddler items, including a dining chair booster seat, highchair, travel cot, mattress and mattress protector (please bring own fitted sheet), a single child’s step, a bed guard to fit a single bed and plastic children’s cups, cutlery and tableware. A stairgate for the first floor is also available. As well as this all the bedding is synthetic and non-allergenic, allowing you to get a full night’s shut-eye without any allergy flare-ups.
On the doorstep there are numerous independent shops, street market, restaurants, pubs and cafés alongside historic attractions and museums, including the medieval castle, the stunning Saxon church with its 15th century wall paintings and Beck Isle Museum. The famous steam train departs from Pickering, transporting visitors on a scenic journey through ’Heartbeat Country’ to the ancient fishing port of Whitby. This area is excellent for both walkers and cyclists, with miles of beautiful walks through the North York Moors National Park and Dalby Forest. Family fun can be found at the Go Ape Adventure Centre and Flamingo Land and there are miles of sandy beaches along the Heritage Coast. Explore the smugglers coves at Staithes and Robin Hood’s Bay and the traditional seaside resorts at Scarborough, Whitby and Filey.
