The holiday cottage is located close to the bustling town of Dumfries, which dates back 800 years and has connections with the poet Robert Burns, with many shops, eateries and pubs. The area is popular with cyclists and walkers, and the cottage is within easy reach of several of the seven Stanes mountain bike centres. Attractions include Drumlanrig Castle, the home of the Duke of Buccleuch, and Queensberry, with a superb art collection, beautiful gardens and extensive country park. Nearby is Thornhill with shops, Castle Douglas, a food and market town and Kirkcudbright, famous for art and a selection of quality golf courses. Within easy reach of the Solway Coast. Also nearby is Mabie Farm Park with quad bikes, trampolines and AstroTurf slides. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 6 miles.

This delightfully situated, detached, holiday cottage has been renovated to a very good standard and is located within the national scenic area. It stands within a secluded garden and enjoy a delightful patio area within the walled area of the garden. The cottage, which is near Caerlaverock Castle, adjoins the famous Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve and is only ¼ mile from the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and, just down the road is the Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve made famous by BBC’s ‘Autumnwatch’. The county town of Dumfries is a short drive away providing a wide range of shops and places of interest. It makes an ideal base for exploring this wonderful area either by car, cycle or on foot and the Mabie Forest mountain bike tracks are close by, whilst the scenic Caerlaverock Estate has a network of paths to enjoy on the doorstep. Close to excellent salmon fishing on the River Nith and wildfowling on the National Nature Reserve. There are several excellent golf courses in the area including the championship course at Southerness. There are wonderful views over the Solway Coast towards the Lake District. The garden is well stocked having roses, shrubs and mature trees. Visit one of the three tearooms within 5 miles.

Situated on Sandy Lane and within a stone’s throw of the beach, Sherauchie is a wonderful large detached bungalow perfect for all the family to enjoy!
Sherauchie is beautifully decorated throughout, modern and spacious. The living room is stunning with amazing features including a very unique fireplace, high vaulted ceiling and beams. Sherauchie boasts three large double bedrooms, the master with en-suite shower room whilst the twin room has a walk-in wet room. The large garden is completely enclosed and the perfect spot to enjoy some dining al fresco!
Sherauchie is situated in the popular coastal village of Southerness and has undoubtedly some of the most outstanding views of the Solway Firth to the English Lake District. Explore the beach and the striking white landmark of the lighthouse, built in 1749, or challenge yourself on the championship golf course, both only a short stroll from Sherauchie. Further afield the area has something to offer everyone from walking, sailing and mountain biking at the world famous 7Stanes range at Mabie Forest or Dalbeattie Forest. With an abundance of historical sites throughout the region and many fun filled activities for adults and children alike, from adventure playgrounds, Farm Parks to Gin Tasting! The area is also well recognised for its clear skies as one of the twelve best stargazing sites in the world and the first Dark Sky Park in the UK therefore after a day exploring either the beach or the region sit back and relax marvelling at the starry dark skies. Sympathetically renovated, this 18th-century stone-built cottage has its own waterwheel and lies at the edge of the small hamlet of Glenmidge. Semi-detached, it lies next to the owner’s home by the Glenmidge Burn, where the odd glimpse of an otter can be seen. Surrounded by hills and forest, the area has abundant wildlife including roe deer, foxes, badgers, tawny and barn owls, buzzards and red kites. There are trail paths for walking, running and mountain biking on the doorstep, but there are also flat routes and quiet country roads along the valley (maps are available in the cottage).
Less than a mile away up the glen stands the remains of the Lag Tower, which was built by the wealthy Grierson family in the 15th century and was last occupied by Sir Robert Grierson towards the end of the 17th century. He was best remembered as a notorious persecutor of the covenanters, and his headstone is in a local graveyard.
Situated on the Kirkpatrick Macmillan Cycle Trail, the cottage is only 5 miles away from the old Courthill Smiddy at Keir, where Kirkpatrick Macmillan invented the first pedal-driven bicycle in the world. A replica is in the museum 3 miles further on at the 17th-century Drumlanrig Castle at Thornhill. Open to the public, the castle has one hundred and twenty rooms, seventeen turrets and four towers, and is home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. As well as beautiful grounds and river walks, it boasts one of the 7stanes cycle centres, with the Ae Forest close by.
Dalswinton Loch is 4 miles away with lovely walks, and there is a replica of the first paddle-driven steam boat in the world which made its first journey on the loch. The famous poet, Robert Burns, was one of the first passengers on board; he lived and worked the farm at Ellisland, where he wrote Auld Lang Syne and Tam o’ Shanter. Ellisland Farm is a museum and visitor centre, 3 miles away.
There are several golf courses to choose from in the area: Thornhill is 7 miles, and Dumfries is 9 miles, and both offer shops and plenty of restaurants and pubs. The highest golf course in Scotland is at Leadhills, near Wanlockhead, which is also the highest village in Scotland. Lying 17 miles away, it is famous for the mining of gold and lead, and you can visit the mining museum there. The River Nith and the River Cairn are both about 2 miles away in opposite directions, both being famous for salmon, sea trout and wild brown trout fishing. Day and season tickets are available to visitors. Each fisherman is permitted to keep two salmon per season. Loch fishing for trout and course fish are also available nearby. Beach 22 miles. East Lodge is a delightful gate lodge, set just off the New Abbey Road, in the pretty hamlet of Islesteps. It has enclosed gardens, perfect for enjoying at any time of the year. Inside, East Lodge is warm and very comfortable, with a cosy open fire in the living room, two lovely bedrooms with comfortable beds and luxurious bedding, and a well-equipped kitchen. The cottage has everything to make your holiday most comfortable and enjoyable.

East Lodge is just 1 mile from the heart of Mabie Forest, where you can enjoy a variety of activities including many and varied walking trails and some of the world-class 7Stanes mountain biking trails. Your little ones are also well catered for with outdoor play areas nearby, and of course your four-legged friends have masses of walks to enjoy too. Another must for your children is a visit to Mabie Farm Park, which is nestled just below Mabie Forest, where you can feed the animals and see the Belted Galloways, alpacas, llamas and much more.

Further afield, this beautiful area of South West Scotland has so much more to offer, from the quiet sandy coves and cliff top walks to the many castles, such as Caerlaverock and Drumlanrig. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the area has plenty of beautiful gardens to visit, including Threave Gardens (National Trust) and Logan Botanic Gardens, Scotland’s most exotic garden. A stay here would not be complete without taking a drive along the coast and a wander round the little seaside villages of Southerness, Rockcliffe and Kippford. Beach 13 miles. Woodend is a delightful, semi-detached cottage, situated on the fringes of the ancient Royal Burgh of Dumfries, in a semi-rural location, but with easy access to all amenities in the town. This lovely cottage is beautifully presented with all rooms being on the ground floor. The living room is one of the best features of this quaint cottage, with double doors that open right onto the secluded rear garden boasting beautiful views.

Dumfries, the county town of beautiful Dumfries and Galloway, is the ideal place to base yourself. The town itself has much to offer including numerous museums, the Camera Obscura, Robert Burns’ house or mausoleum - Scotland’s most famous poet spent the last years of his life here. Not far from the town, a visit to Caerlaverock Wetland Centre, a spectacular 1400-acre wild reserve, will keep you busy all day no matter what time of year. If you want to explore more of this beautiful area, there are attractions in abundance, from beautiful sandy beaches to dramatic cliff tops along the majestic Solway Coast. With sailing, swimming, horse riding, fishing, golf, boat trips and water sports close by, there is something for everyone. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, there are many beautiful gardens to visit, including National Trust Threave Gardens. Close to the Galloway Forest Park, home to the first Dark Sky Park in Europe, and central to five of the 7Stanes, at Mabie and Dalbeattie Forests, it is a popular location for cyclists and mountain bikers. Beattock is situated 2 miles from Moffat, a vibrant and bustling little town which attracts visitors throughout the year. With pathways from Broomlands why not take a walk into Moffat on a fine day and have a wander around the many speciality shops and cafés in the town. Of course you must sample the famous Moffat Toffee. Set in the heart of Upper Annandale amidst the beautiful southern upland hills it is a walker’s paradise with many routes starting from the town and taking in some beautiful lochs and valleys along the way. Broomlands Cottage is the ideal base to explore further afield but before you do take a short drive up to the Grey Mares Tail one of Scotland’s favourite water falls plunging 60 metres into the valley below, a spectacular sight.
As well as the hills and valleys, South West Scotland has more than 200 miles of fabulous coastline for you to discover with delightful little seaside towns and villages, beautiful beaches and dramatic cliff top walks. If the bright lights of a city beckon Glasgow and Edinburgh can both be reached within an hour’s drive. Beach 27 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

Before enjoying a bite to eat take a stroll through the nature trail where you can see belted Galloway cows or partake in a spot of bird watching from the bird hide. There is a secret garden where younger members of the family will love exploring. The farm shop stocks everything from gifts and flowers to takeaway meals. There is even an adventure playground for the children.
If fishing is your passion you can walk/cycle easily to Auldernauk Fishery from Terraughtie Cottage East, a most attractive and well stocked three acre fly-only loch holding good sized rainbow, blue, brown and tiger trout! A quiet and friendly family-owned fishery run by anglers.
If you can tear yourself away for a day sightseeing, the area is renowned for its rugged beauty from beautiful sandy beaches, cliff top walks and forest trails. The world renowned 7stanes mountain biking routes are also within easy reach.
