This attractive cottage rests in the village of Gargrave, on the edge of Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is the location for the new TV series of All Creatures Great and Small and only 15 miles from Haworth famous for the Brontës and setting for the new and old Railway Children films. It is an ideal location with everything you need in the village, but the countryside right on your doorstep, with the Pennine Way and Settle Carlisle Railway both a short walk away and the river 100 yards away for picnics. Gateway to the Lakes but also close to well-known cities such as Blackpool, Manchester and Leeds (45 minutes’ by train). Links to London or Edinburgh with only one change of train.

Set in a stunning rural position within the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Fell Cottage is a traditional limestone conversion of a former farm building restored to provide a wonderful quaint holiday retreat. The cottage is situated in beautiful Raydale, a rural and unspoilt area of Wensleydale. It is surrounded by traditional farming country and ringed by high fells.
In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. It is handy for many of the areas famous attractions, including the bustling little market town of Hawes and the pretty villages of Bainbridge and Askrigg, with its pub which was used as the local in the James Herriot series ’All Creatures Great and Small’.
Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. Marsett itself has true rustic country charm as cattle and sheep can roam freely on the village green. Horse riding and fishing nearby. Shop, pub and restaurant 3½ miles.

Set in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, this former mill workers’ cottage is in an idyllic tranquil location at the bottom of a country lane set between the river on one side and a charming mill pond on the other. One of 12 terraced houses fronting onto a cobbled street built in 1783 to house workers for the cotton mill, now lovingly restored to combine a wealth of features with exposed stonework and beams together with the comforts of contemporary living. It makes for an ideal location from which to walk or cycle direct from the door through some of the most scenic countryside in Yorkshire. Conquer one, or all three of the ’Three Peaks’; Ingleborough, Whernside and Penyghent, or cycle through the peaceful and rarely visited Kingdale with its quiet lanes and isolated farmhouses. Alternatively, both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District are readily accessible by car. The bustling market town of Settle is well served with a variety of pubs and restaurants and is just 1 mile away. Here you will also find a swimming pool, golf course and weekly market. This former cart store has been converted into a quaint Dale’s stone cottage set just off the village green in Bellerby. With its streams and mill race running through Bellerby it’s a picturesque setting at the edge of Wensleydale. Entering the front door into the living/dining room with exposed stonework, flagstone flooring, beams and a large inglenook fireplace, the cottage offers an abundance of character and charm. The two settees set around the open fire offer a cosy feel while watching the Smart TV in Holly Cottage.
A dining table and chairs are positioned to the rear of the room. Going through to the kitchen, all the appliances, crockery, and utensils you need are available to rustle up some cosy meals while staying at Holly Cottage. The characterful staircase from the living room has uneven, deep treads with a rope banister to guide you up towards the two bedrooms. Both rooms offer comfortable beds, one being a double, the other offering bunk beds suitable for children with attractive quality linen and hand and bath towels available for each Guest. The compact shower room has a shower cubicle with a deep step in/out, toilet, sink and heated towel rail.
To the rear of the property there is an enclosed picket fenced garden which includes a lawn area and flower beds, along with a stone patio h a table, chairs, and a bench to enjoy sitting at while taking in a morning coffee or firing up the barbecue for an alfresco supper. The South facing front garden is not secured for dogs but guests can happily sit there on the bench and watch the world go by. The shared front driveway which offers parking for 1 car. Bellerby is a village situated on the edge of The Yorkshire Dales National Park with a local pub serving a selection of real ales but unfortunately no food and although there is no shop or amenities as such in the village the lovely market town of Leyburn is just over a mile away where an array of individual shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants are available. If you are looking to get out and stretch your legs, whether walking or cycling, there are abundant established public footpaths, bridleways, and cycle routes available in the local vicinity with spectacular scenery, open countryside, and pretty Yorkshire villages to explore.
Within easy driving distance there is an array of places to visit whether it’s the historic Castle Bolton, Richmond Castle, Jervaulx Abbey or the stunning Aysgarth Falls, there is something to suit everyone’s taste. The children and adults alike will love Forbidden Corner with its quirky folly garden to explore or for the more adventurous why not visit the theme park, Lightwater Valley. Whatever you choose to do please immerse yourself fully in the Yorkshire way of life – once you experience it you’ll be wanting to return where a warm welcome to you will always be found.

Just a short drive from both Kirkby Stephen and Appleby, Soulby is an ideal base for exploring the area. Walkers can find routes for all abilities, gentle strolls through the village or a heartier ramble to make the most of the stunning landscape. Cyclists too head to the area for its variety of routes, where both challenging and novice rides will offer scenery worth the effort whatever the season. Both bustling market towns, Appleby and Kirkby Stephen remain thriving communities, with an eclectic mix of history, independent retailers, local cafés and restaurants, and traditional inns well worth a visit.

Outlying villages enjoy award-winning inns with local produce and local ale to be enjoyed, perhaps after a days exploring. Close at hand to the picturesque Eden Valley, are both the North Pennines and the northern Lake District. A short journey to Penrith takes you on the edge of the Lake District National Park, with Lake Ullswater and its fells and villages dotting the shore, well worth a day trip. This charming, terraced Dales cottage is set in the picturesque village of Redmire near Leyburn. Tastefully decorated with country charm, the cosy living room has traditional beams and a warming wood burner. Just 4 miles west of Leyburn, and in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, the village of Redmire is like a picture postcard, with country walks and some spectacular views over Lower Wensleydale. For getting out and about it even has its own station on the Wensleydale Railway. The line runs for 16 miles and links the village with Leyburn and Leeming in the Vale of York, and is serviced by diesel and occasionally steam engines making several return trips daily.

Redmire provides a perfect base from which to explore the pretty Dales villages. Try the circular walk from Redmire to Aysgarth taking in both the Redmire Falls and spectacular Aysgarth Falls. Visit Castle Bolton where Mary Queen of Scots was held in the 16th century. Explore Preston under Scar, the River Ure and Penhill, passing through the beautiful Dales countryside. Scenes for ’All Creatures Great and Small’ were filmed here and elsewhere in the village.

Nearby are the market towns of Hawes and Leyburn with their many shops, pubs, restaurants and craft workshops, where craftsmen display their skills and sell hand made products. Historical castles and ruins are numerous with Bolton Castle almost on the doorstep and Middleham Castle a few miles away. The Forbidden Corner is just down the road with its labyrinth of tunnels and underground caves to explore with an excellent on-site restaurant for lunch or supper. This detached barn conversion is tucked away in a hidden valley within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, yet just 2 miles away from the bustling village of Grassington, which is well served with pubs, restaurants and individual country shops. The village also hosts the Grassington Festival, where well known stars perform, or near Christmas it holds the Dickensian Festival to really get people in a festive mood. Tom’s Barn has been lovingly restored and stands proudly on a hill, and the living room is upstairs to take advantage of the glorious views, both inside, with fantastic Cruck beams, and outside, over the hills to the moors above Hebden Gill.

This is a peaceful location ideal for getting away from the bustle of everyday life, with fantastic walks direct from the door, and for cyclists this is Tour De France country. The grounds lead on to ’fairyland’, a special area of oak and ash trees, bluebells and foxgloves, a beautiful wild and dramatic place.

For shopaholics, the famous spa town of Harrogate is a half an hour drive away. Here, you will find the normal high street shops and also high end fashion, or take time to have a traditional afternoon tea at Betty’s tea room. A little further afield lies the historic city of York with its Minster, museums and quaint cobbled streets. Shops and restaurant 3 miles, pub ½ mile.

The historic market town of Richmond is just a short drive with its Norman castle, Georgian theatre and quaint cobbled streets, surrounded by a good selection of tea rooms, gift shops and convenience stores. From here you can enjoy a riverside walk to Easby Abbey which lies in picturesque surroundings by the River Swale. Easby is one of the best preserved monasteries of the Premonstratensian ’White Canons’, with the magnificent refectory, gatehouse and canons’ dormitory remaining. The parish church within the precinct, which is still in use, contains rare 13th century wall paintings.

Travel just 7 miles to the west and you will arrive in the popular market town of Leyburn where a buzzing market lines the streets every Friday with stallholders selling a wide array of produce and wares. Leyburn is well served by a good range of traditional shops and amenities. The green rolling hills of Wensleydale lie to the west of Leyburn with many historic, inspiring landmarks. Just 2 miles from Leyburn is Middleham, famous for its castle that was home to Richard III, and has a wonderful racehorse presence. As well as the Dales, you are just a half hour drive away from the North York Moors National Park with attractions such as Sutton Bank, where you can take in the breathtaking views back across the national park or spend your day strolling around the market towns of Thirsk, Bedale and Northallerton. The Lake District can be reached in just over an hour. Beach 27 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

The village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale lies below the huge sphinx-like form of Pen-y-Ghent, one of the iconic Yorkshire Three Peaks and is the preferred starting point for the Three Peaks Walk. The celebrated Pen-y-Ghent café and shop in the centre of Horton is known as the official start and timing point for the Three Peaks Walk because of the old ticket punching machine inside.

The village is a short drive from both Settle and the market town of Skipton with its magnificent castle. There are a number of quaint villages and spectacular attractions to explore nearby. The market town of Ingleton nestles in the foothills of Ingleborough, another of Yorkshire’s famous Three Peaks and is surrounded by magnificent limestone countryside with deep caves and spectacular waterfalls.

After a day of exploring, return to one of the village’s two traditional pubs, one of which lies right on the Pennine Way and welcomes weary walkers with log fires and local ales, and another that has a stone flagged bar area, especially for those with muddy boots and maybe the odd dog in tow. The nearest village is Ravenstonedale, just 1½ miles away, which has award winning pubs as well as a 9-hole golf course and tennis courts. A wider range of amenities can be found in the nearby market town of Kirkby Stephen, including independent shops, cafés and pubs, as well as a couple of supermarkets and a tourist/visitor centre. Kirkby Stephen also has a Heritage railway station and a weekly market which is held in the town square every Monday. The first ’Walkers are Welcome’ town, Kirkby Stephen is surrounded by spectacular countryside with miles of footpaths, bridleways and open land, making this the ideal base for those who love the outdoors. Apart from the fantastic walking and cycling opportunities, there is also a pony trekking centre just 1 mile away. Alternatively why not take a scenic rail journey on the historic Settle-Carlisle line, or travel vintage style with Cumbria Classic Coaches from Kirkby Stephen to Hawes, where you can visit the Wensleydale Creamery, Barnard Castle and Bowes museum.
