The pleasant village is situated within easy walking distance of Derwent Water, with all its watersports, and is only 1.5 miles walk through the fields to the popular Lake District town of Keswick. All around there are views of the mountains, from Skiddaw to Grizedale Pike and Cat Bells, with superb walking and cycling available locally (bike hire in Keswick). Corner Cottage is set in an ideal position on the north edge of Windermere village. Enjoy being close to all the village amenities. It is also well placed for Bowness and Ambleside and access to the shores of Lake Windermere is only a short distance away. The longest lake in England, Lake Windermere enjoys a dramatic backdrop of wooded slopes and bare fells. Troutbeck Bridge lies to the north between Windermere and Ambleside; handy for both but located just off the beaten track.
Visit the 18th-century dome shaped villa on Belle Isle, the largest of the fourteen islands, which can be reached by ferry. Nearby attractions include a steamboat museum and visitors’ centre at Brockhole. Across the waters at Far Sawrey lies Beatrix Potter’s former home Hill Top (National Trust), a must for anyone who has ever enjoyed the tales of Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-duck. West Fells Cottage is situated in the village of Rowrah which is located on the fringe of the Lake District National Park between Cockermouth and Ennerdale. In less than 2 miles you’ll reach the National Park where you have an abundance of walks, cycle routes, wildlife, mountains and lakes. It offers easy access to explore the Western Lake District and coast, and has a couple of pubs and restaurants nearby. Your nearest lake is Ennerdale Water which is less than 4 miles away. Ennerdale is widely regarded as one of the most unspoilt areas of the Lake District National Park, and thanks to this it is teaming with wildlife including indigenous red squirrels, ospreys and buzzards. If that’s not enough, Loweswater is less than 6 miles away which leads to Crummock Water and then Buttermere. The scenery around this unspoilt part of the Lakes is stunning, and the beauty, colours and unforgettable panoramic views are a sight to behold. This old, stone barn, surrounded by 20 acres of unspoilt pasture land, with the owner’s living next door, dates back to the mid 1800s, and has been lovingly converted into a holiday home, combining charm and rustic features alongside all the contemporary comforts and amenities. Entering at ground floor level, there is a spacious hallway with underfloor heating, and plenty of room for coats and muddy boots. Once a traditional farming and quarrying village, Hartley is a quiet place to stay, and the main sound you will hear is the babbling beck which runs through the village to the front of the cottage. The remains of the 12th-century castle can be seen on the hill which overlooks the village and on the summit of Hartley Fell are the mysterious ’Nine Standards’, a line of nine standing stones. Situated on the Coast to Coast footpath, the cottage is perfect for walkers. There is a variety of walks on offer to suit all abilities from a quiet riverside walk or a stroll along the railway lines to more challenging fell walks. The Eden Viaducts footpath starts in Hartley and the Howgill Fells are within easy reach, as are the North Pennines. The area is also great for cycling, with Kirkby Stephen on the C2C (Sea to Sea) Cycle Route. Other routes nearby include the W2W (Walney to Wear) coast to coast route and the Lakes and Dales Loop. There is an electric bike hire shop in the village and normal bike hire in Kirkby Stephen, or should you wish to bring your own bikes, storage is available on-site.
