Copingers Cottage takes its name from ’Cruel Copinger’, a notorious 18-century smuggler that once lived here. This delightful, spacious, semi-detached, ground floor cottage is the perfect romantic coastal retreat, nestled within an idyllic rural setting, just a mile from the coastal path. The cottage sits in a peaceful location at the head of the famous Spekes Valley with its majestic waterfall cascading down a shear rock face 60ft, through a series of four smaller falls before finally reaching the sea. There are beautiful views, countryside and walks from the doorstep with an abundance of birds and wildlife to be seen.

Copingers Cottage is beautifully presented and has a spacious living room and cosy wood burner to curl up beside on a cooler evening, along with a private patio to enjoy an al fresco supper on a summer evening. This pretty barn conversion sits within the Hartland Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the North Devon coast with many dog friendly, long sandy beaches and hidden coves to explore, where occasionally dolphins can be seen frolicking in the Atlantic surf.

This is an ideal location for touring, walking, beaches or just relaxing. The timeless village of Hartland is only 1½ miles away and has a good selection of village shops and pubs serving food along with a post office, general store, bakery and craft shops. The hamlet of Stoke and the church of St. Nectan, known as the ’Cathedral of North Devon’, is just a short walk and the view from the church tower shows Hartland Abbey set in this beautiful valley with its many enchanting and delightful walks. Bude, 13 miles, has a good selection of shops and restaurants, many specialising in locally caught seafood, along with a golf course, indoor ’splash’ pool, surf schools and bowling. The delightful port town of Bideford, 15 miles, has a good selection of town amenities, restaurants, a weekly market and boat trips to Lundy Island. Coastal walking, cycling, golf, horse riding, fishing, surfing and sailing are all available in this stunning area. Docton Mill, Hartland Quay and Hartland Abbey are close by, along with many pretty fishing villages to explore including nearby Clovelly, Instow and Appledore. Beach 1½ miles. Fabulous beaches for relaxing and surfing can be found at Westward Ho!, Saunton Sands, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay, and are all within easy reach. Visit the bustling resort of Bude, the spectacular coastal pathways around Hartland Point and the market town of Bideford, from where visitors can take boat trips to the island of Lundy, England’s only marine nature reserve.
The owner supplies a fishing pass so you can enjoy the adjacent lakes, and golf, surfing, sailing and horse riding are all on offer close by. For cycling enthusiasts and walkers, the nearby Tarka Trail is not to be missed and there are numerous National Trust properties in the area. Beach 6¾ miles. As you enter Tubs Cottage you are instantly greeted with its cottage-like charm. Refurbished in 2022, you find yourself in the well-equipped kitchen area, with its wooden beamed ceiling and quirky shaped corners. There is a door from the kitchen area leading onto the family bathroom, a spacious room with bath and shower above. The living area is accessed via the other side of the kitchen and it is as if this cosy room hugs you when you enter, a great place to relax in front of the electric fire, watching TV with a glass of wine after a long day out. From here there is a couple of steps up leading into a conservatory-like ’breakfast room’ area with table and chair seating. The staircase leads from the living room to the first floor where two of the three bedrooms are located. These bedrooms both have a double bed and good size with storage. Up a second flight of stairs leads to the loft room (guests are advised that there is a fixed rope handrail leading up to this room and there is a restricted head height due to the pitch of the roof). This room makes a 2nd living area with twin beds. The small front garden/patio with garden furniture and parasol is perfect for watching the world go by on summer’s evenings.

Tubs Cottage is Grade ll listed thatched cottage dating back to around 1450. It is situated just outside of the heart of Newton Abbot and benefits from an array of amenities on your doorstep. There is a local pub with pool table directly across the road with private car park serving food and drinks. Local takeaways and fish and chip shops are just down the road, as well as a local convenience store and post office. There is also a small retail park with a variety of shops all within walking distance. The local seaside town of Shaldon and Teignmouth, with its pier and beaches, is just a short 10-minute drive away, and the city of Exeter is just a 20-minute drive from the cottage. There is a railway station just 1½ miles away, if you want a car free day out. The surrounding towns which make up the English Riviera are also all nearby and make great days out for all the family!
