Set in a stunning rural position within the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Fell Cottage is a traditional limestone conversion of a former farm building restored to provide a wonderful quaint holiday retreat. The cottage is situated in beautiful Raydale, a rural and unspoilt area of Wensleydale. It is surrounded by traditional farming country and ringed by high fells.
In the distance the dramatic peak of Addleborough can be seen and Lake Semerwater is a pleasant walk away. Raydale is a haven for wildlife, with hares and deer often sighted in the surrounding fields at dawn and dusk, along with a wide variety of upland bird life including pheasant, partridge, curlew, duck and of course, Lake Semerwater stocked with a variety of fish. The hamlet of Marsett is set high in the hills above Bainbridge, providing far reaching panoramic views of the dales and fells beyond. You are just a short stroll away from Scagglethorpe’s warm and welcoming village pub, the true heart of the village. There is also a nearby play park for young children. There is a wide choice of places to visit nearby, with something for everyone. For history buffs Eden Camp is just 5-minutes away, a prisoner of war camp now transformed into a fascinating World War II museum. The stately home of Castle Howard is a short drive from the cottage, holding events throughout the year including the summer proms. Spend a day exploring the house and before sampling some of the cakes on offer from one of the tea rooms. The Christmas experience is also one of the very best in the country. There are other stately homes within a short distance of the property, including Duncombe Park and Nunnington Hall. Don’t forget the stunning gardens at Helmsley too.
This area is a fantastic base for both cyclists and walkers, with a large network of footpaths and country lanes. The famous market towns of Malton and Helmsley are within a few minutes’ drive and offer market days around their cobbled squares as well as a great array of shops, cafés and restaurants. Thornton-le-Dale is a picture perfect little village built around a little stream, ideal for a memorable day out. Less than 10 miles away is Pickering, nestled on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, where you can ride the heritage steam train across the beautiful moorland to the coastal town of Whitby. The ancient walled city of York with its beautiful minster and award winning-attractions is only a 30-minute drive away, while 30 minutes to the east takes you to beautiful Filey beach and its fabulous coastline. Strensall is located on the River Foss with a wide range of facilities including three pubs, a choice of grocery shops, post office, takeaway and a fish and chip shop. On the doorstep is York Golf Club and Strensall Common, a huge conservation area maintained by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and which is popular with birdwatchers.
Regular buses run from the village to the centre of the ancient walled city of York, 7 miles away. Steeped in history and brimming with attractions, York appeals to all ages. Visit the magnificent minster, the Jorvik Viking Centre and the Railway Museum, browse the art galleries and stroll along the cobbled streets and city walls. This is the ideal location for exploring the dramatic Yorkshire Coastline, and only a short stroll away from the beach following the steps down from the cliff top. The Cleveland Way passes by the doorstep, taking you along the coast and then inland into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
