Whitby is a bustling seaside town with its majestic abbey standing proud on the headland reached by 199 steps from the cobbled streets lined with independent shops and cafés. Scarborough and Filey lie to the east of Pickering, both fantastic seaside resorts with award winning beaches. The Dalby Forest is a short drive or bike ride from the cottage and is home to one of the World Cup Mountain Bike Trials, and there are challenging runs as well as the easy routes for beginners. The Dalby Forest is also home to ’Go Ape’, a great high rope adventure course through the forest. Just a 10-minute drive away is Flamingo Land Theme Park with exhilarating rides and a fantastic zoo making for a great family day out. Beach 19 miles. The charming village of Thornton Le Dale is a delight - old fashioned friendliness with an unhurried pace of life. The village has everything you could need, two pubs serving food and county beers on draft, a fish and chip shop, and artisan pizzeria, yet still retains its quaint village beauty, with the chocolate box thatched cottages and Almshouses. The tranquil Thornton Beck meanders through the village and flows outside the front of the cottage. The village pond is always popular with children feeding the ducks. On the village green there’s the original stocks and market cross where on Sundays during the summer months local bands plays music to entertain you whilst you sit back and enjoy one of the wonderful ice creams the village is renowned for.
Only a couple of miles away is the traditional Yorkshire market town of Pickering, which combines atmospheric old inns, 12th-century castle, museum and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway taking visitors on a nostalgic steam train journey through the spectacular heather-clad moorland scenery. The ancient City of York is just 26 miles away and offers the majestic minster, the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre, the Castle Museum, the National Railway Museum, and excellent shopping facilities. Castle Howard, setting for TV’s Brideshead Revisited, Nunnington Hall (National Trust), Duncombe Park, and Rievaulx Abbey, are just a few of the local treasures to discover.

Finlay’s Cottage is less than a mile away from the heart of the historical market town of Pickering. Here in the National Park you have beautiful scenery and quaint rural villages surrounding you, with the coast just a 30-minute drive away. Located down a peaceful cul de sac, which is accessed by crossing over the railway line. You have your own private parking space outside at the front of the cottage, with an enclosed garden at the rear.

Stepping inside, the hallway leads you into the open plan kitchen with a dining area. This beautiful kitchen is ideal for creating your favourite meals together, it is well equipped and complete with an integrated dishwasher and a large fridge/freezer for all your groceries. The lounge is separate, with a cosy sofa and an armchair around the feature electric stove. There is a separate toilet and a utility room. Up on the first floor you have two bedrooms, a double which has a window seat where you can watch the passing steam trains and a twin bedroom. There is also a family shower room, with a large walk-in shower. On the second floor you have the spacious master bedroom with a double bed.

Pickering is an ancient market town with an array of shops and restaurants to choose from, as well as the castle ruins to explore and sits at the foot of the North York Moors National Park. Why not take a ride on the steam railway and travel through the rolling moorland to the coastal town of Whitby. Nearby you also have Dalby Forest, where you will find great walking and cycling tracks. The fabulous Go Ape, a high wire tree top adventure, is situated in the forest, or if you prefer to be closer to the ground, try the forest segways and ride around the forest tracks. Take a day trip to Flamingo Land theme park and zoo, only a few minutes’ drive away. Pickering is in the ideal location for visiting the East coast. Pretty, quaint little villages such as Thornton-le-Dale and Helmsley are within a few minutes’ drive, as well as the big cities of York and Hull. The seaside resorts of Scarborough, Filey, Flamborough, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are all within a short drive.

This house is a great size for families as well as two couples holidaying together. You are in a great location for discovering the beautiful countryside of the surrounding national park as well as the stunning coastline. With your own private driveway, the house is conveniently positioned just over the road from the Black Bull Pub which serves a great choice of meals beside an open fire.

Adjoining the kitchen, you have the dining room, which is in the large, heated conservatory looking out into the enclosed garden with a large patio area. Here you have the option of eating inside as well as out in the sunshine. At the front of the property, you have the living room, complete with an open fire; there’s nothing like a cosy night in front of the amber glow of real flames, hearing them pop and crackle as they radiate their warmth. Also on the ground, floor you have a shower room. The stairs lead up from the landing to the first floor where you have the family bathroom with a shower over the bath as well as three beautifully presented bedrooms. The master bedroom is a generous size with a super kingsize bed and large wardrobes as well as drawers for all of your belongings. The second bedroom has a double bed and in the third bedroom you have a single day bed with a trundle single bed which can be used for an additional guest on request.
The house is 1.5 miles from the pretty market town of Pickering. This is a wonderful base for exploring the North York Moors and the nearby coastline. A steam train winds its way from Pickering over the rolling heather, through valleys and over hills to many picturesque villages all the way to Whitby and is ideal for a special day out; in December it becomes a themed Christmas Santa Special. One of the highlights on the calendar in Pickering is the annual War Weekend, where battle re-enactments take place and live music can be enjoyed, and when the town seems to slip back in time. The surrounding North York Moors is a haven for walkers with many trails to explore and an abundance of wildlife. Dalby Forest has a choice of trails for cyclists as well as walkers, whilst thrill seekers have the Go Ape zip lines through the tree tops. Nearby is Malton, the food capital of Yorkshire, with a market, award-winning restaurants and a cookery school.
For history lovers, Castle Howard is one of Britain’s finest stately homes, sure to fill you with awe, or you can visit the castle, walled gardens and the abbey’s at Helmsley, as well as the photogenic priory in Guisborough. There are also the beaches at Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington nearby to explore. Flamingoland theme park and zoo is a real treat for children, only 5 minutes away. Beach 19 miles.
