Excellent coastal walking can be enjoyed from the doorstep, and there is an abundance of bird life and nearby nature reserves, so be sure to bring your binoculars. The beach is 5 yards away so beach exploring, tidal swimming and crabbing is outside the door. Paddle-boarding and kayak on request.Windsurfing, kite-surfing, dinghy sailing, canoeing and sea fishing can be enjoyed from the beach (equipment not provided). Be prepared to drive out for trips and other amenities in local towns.
The Colne Estuary offers further fishing and boating opportunities. Check out Brightlingsea Harbour. There is a great watersports park at St Osyth, a 2-mile drive away. This area is well regarded as Essex’s ‘best kept secret’, with the popular coastal towns of Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe, Mersea, Clacton, Frinton and Walton-on-the-Naze, all within half an hour’s drive. There is a foot ferry (summer months) to Mersea Island to Brightlingsea to enjoy the promenade, lido and fish and chips. The town of Colchester is close by, famous for its cobbled streets, castle and world renowned zoo, with a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants. Further afield are Ipswich, Chelmsford and Felixstowe. Many picturesque villages and the Constable Country are close by - Dedham, Flatford Mill and Manningtree within ½ hour and, Nayland, Lavenham and Long Melford to name but a few. Other local pastimes include golf.

Driftwood is a semi-detached, single-storey property in the ever popular village of Pakefield, and close to the most easterly point in England. The property is beautifully renovated throughout with luxurious touches and traditional features. A perfect getaway location for a couple, Chick Hatch Barn is a beautifully restored barn nestling deep in the Suffolk countryside. A cosy beamed living area with a wood burner opens out onto the patio from where there are sweeping views over the fields. Sympathetically renovated, and standing detached, it lies on the owners’ working sheep and beef farm, close to the historic market towns of Framlingham and Saxmundham, and offers a great holiday base from which to enjoy good cycling and walking. The Suffolk Heritage Coast is close by and Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Southwold are all within easy reach. The RSPB reserve at Minsmere is a very popular stop along the coast, along with Dunwich, ‘The Lost City’, which was lost to the sea, and whose ruins are visible from the shoreline. Beach 10 miles. This delightful cluster of converted barns can be found deep in the Suffolk countryside, set in 80 acres of grazing meadows on the owner’s working beef farm where the owner lives. Henry’s Barn (ref UKC3168) is a semi-detached barn conversion and can accommodate up to six guests including two guests with restricted mobility, on the ground floor. The Old Dairy (ref UKC3169) is also part of a barn conversion ideal for a couple or small family. The Old Corn Mill (ref UKC3170) is another semi-detached barn conversion and has a large communal seating area, ideal if all properties are booked together, accommodating up to 16 guests.

Whilst offering holiday makers a cosy and comfortable stay, these 18th-century barns have retained much of their charm and character, and share use of an indoor heated pool which can be booked for private sessions, and is open from Easter to September (please bring your own towels). You are also ideally located to discover the Suffolk countryside locations of Framlingham and the infamous Castle on the Hill, the market town of Halesworth for a spot of retail therapy and the equally beautiful Beccles, a market town situated on the southern network of the Norfolk Broads National Park. Located in the ever popular village of Pakefield near Lowestoft, Florence Cottage is an original fisherman’s cottage, wonderfully renovated by the owners. An open plan living/dining room lends itself well to socialable evenings after a day of exploring the Suffolk Heritage Coast. The wood burner is also an added bonus for those cooler winter evenings.

The cottage is only 500 yards from the beach, where dogs are welcome all year round, and the beach is a blend of sand dunes and wide open space. Further south, during the summer the promenade is very popular, with the Claremont Pier a big hit with little ones (and big kids!).

Lowestoft is the most easterly point in the UK and is known as the ’sunrise coast’. You are ideally located to explore the surrounding area, including Southwold, Aldeburgh, RSPB Minsmere, Dunwich and Walberswick for a spot of crabbing. For those looking for fun on the water, Oulton Broad is nearby, the southern gateway to the Norfolk Broads National Park, where fishing, day boats and riverside pubs and restaurants are the usual haunts of guests to the area.
