Situated beside the North York Moors National Park, yet only 3 miles from Scarborough’s golden beaches, this cluster of high quality holiday cottages enjoy views over open meadowland, Scarborough Castle and the sea. Full of charm, character and original features, the cottages are well-equipped, stylish and comfortable – all the bedrooms have en-suite facilities. The rear lawned and enclosed garden, with patio, garden furniture and shared barbecue, has a western aspect ideal for evening relaxation, whilst the front lawned gardens overlook the countryside and sea.
Scalby, a lovely rural village with a historic church, café/restaurant, shops and two local inns, is only a 15-minute walk from the cottages and, if visitors can bear to leave the comfort and special tranquillity of Barmoor, it is ideally located for walking, cycling or touring the glorious forests, moorland and seascapes which are virtually on the doorstep. Each cottage offers a ‘Drive/walk, good food guide’, compiled by the owners to maximise visitors’ holiday enjoyment.
Among Scarborough’s many attractions are a Sea Life Centre and Theatre in the Round (offering productions and films for all ages) as well as plenty of restaurants, cafés and evening entertainment. Sea trips are available from the harbour and coarse fishing is enjoyed at nearby Throxenby Mere.
The Forge Valley Woodland Reserve lies ½ mile walk from the cottages and quiet lanes lead directly to Langdale Forest. Golf courses and riding stables are found locally and the more energetic might like to tackle the nearby Cleveland Way long distance footpath, with its stunning views over land and sea. The inviting moorland countryside and picturesque villages of ‘Heartbeat’ fame are a joy to explore and a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway is a must.
A 30-minute drive up the coast leads to the many delights of Robin Hood’s Bay and the old port of Whitby, a fascinating historic town, traditionally associated with Count Dracula and in whose attractive harbour tall ships often lie at anchor. The great houses of Sledmere, Burton Agnes and Castle Howard are all within 20 miles of the cottages.

Granary Farm Cottages lie on the south facing slopes of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. This former farm is 1 mile from the village of Sawdon. Set in large landscaped gardens it is a quiet and relaxing holiday base from which to explore the surrounding countryside. Perfect for walks and cycle rides into the forest from the doorstep. Great for bird watching in the gardens or forest, with Raptor View Point a short drive away. The area also has dark skies so ideal for avid stargazers. Convenient for Scarborough, Whitby and York, and the market towns of Malton, Helmsley and Pickering with its steam railway. Castle Howard and Heartbeat country are an easy drive away. There is an award-winning butchers in the neighbouring village of Brompton. North Yorkshire Water Park is 6 miles from the properties. This is described as the largest natural water sport lake in North Yorkshire. Pub 1 mile and shops 3 miles.

Situated on a working sheep farm it is within walking distance of the village where you’ll find a children’s park and a railway station with regular trains to Skipton and Leeds. There are 2 pubs within a 3-4 minute walk. There are plenty of walks direct from the door, with the Pennine Way running past the farm offering a multitude of picturesque walks.
The market town of Skipton is just 3 miles away, known as the ’Gateway to the Dales’ where you will find shopping, a Norman castle and canal boat trips. Close by is picturesque Bolton Abbey, lovely to explore and stroll through the woodland alongside the river at any time of the year. Shop 750 yards, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining four lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of free parking, an outdoor sitting area and bike parking racks.

Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafés and a restaurant, and in 2020 the village was featured on the BBC programme ’Gone Christmas Fishing’ with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer. Situated just a mile outside the famous and charming village of Goathland, Tilly’s Cottage has the best of both worlds; easy access to all the area has to offer and peace and quiet however busy it is in the village. The owner has also provided use of two Pendleton electric bikes for guests use - a fun and easier way to explore Goathland, Darnholme, Beck Hole, the ’Roman Road’ and perhaps even Egton.
Tilly’s Cottage is part of Thornhill Farm, a working moorland sheep farm, which is known to go back to at least the early 17th century when it was sold by James I. Tilly’s Cottage itself was part of the Victorian development in the 1860s and retains many of its original features like the low beams, open range fire and ’coffin drop’. This traditionally decorated, peaceful, homely and deceptively large cottage is surrounded by fields and open moorland and is both a wonderful place to relax and a great base for further explorations. One of the first floor bedrooms and the second floor bedroom each have wonderful moorland views.
Known to millions as ’Aidensfield’ from the Yorkshire television series ’Heartbeat’, there is much to recognise in Goathland, and Tilly’s Cottage itself was used many times in the filming. Beyond Goathland lies Whitby with its beautiful harbour, abbey ruins, cliff-top golf, fish and chips and story of Dracula. Both Whitby and the charming town of Pickering can be reached by the steam train from Goathland, which runs alongside one of Thornhill’s fields, enabling guest to take unique close-up pictures of the trains steaming along.
