The historic hill top village of Hawnby is a designated Conservation Area of traditional stone and pantiles roof cottages, with the local pub just a short walk away. The area is also a walker’s paradise, with an enormous selection of footpaths and bridleways to choose from, including the nearby Inn Way and Cleveland Ways long distance paths. What could be more romantic than an escape to the country in a bespoke shepherd’s hut, enjoying a home cooked meal with a glass of wine out on the decking as the light fades and the colours of the sunset ebb across the sky.
Dreamer’s Hut is only 6 miles from Helmsley, one of Yorkshire’s finest market towns. This renowned market town is where the North York Moors and the Howardian Hills meet, offering fine historic views and countryside with a reputation for great Yorkshire hospitality. The market square is a meeting point for walkers, cyclists and locals alike. There are also many shops, cafés, eateries including Michelin starred restaurants, an open-air swimming pool, walled garden, castle, bird of prey centre, microbrewery, two abbey ruins and the stately home of Duncombe Park.
The Dreamer’s Hut is named after ’The Hawnby Dreamers’ - three local shepherds who in the mid-1700s, fell asleep whilst working in the fields on a hot day in the adjacent valley of Ladhill Ghyll, of which the hut overlooks. The shepherds awoke to discover they had each had the same vivid dream of spiritual awakening and being called to change their lives for the better. The three subsequently walked to Newcastle to hear the preaching of the famous John Wesley and converted to Methodism, bringing this faith back to Hawnby. Outside is a private garden offering both a lawn and patio area, an idyllic spot to sit and relax. Freshly laid eggs from the free-range chickens are available purchase to enjoy a healthy start to your day or pick some of the many herbs in your garden area to help create some delicious home cooked recipes.
This beautiful part of North Yorkshire is a walkers and cyclist’s paradise, with miles of footpaths, cycle routes and bridle ways not to mention the Coast-to-Coast and Cleveland Way paths. On the doorstep is Castle Howard, home to ‘Brideshead Revisited’ and ITV’s ‘Victoria’, Byland and Rievaulx Abbey, Helmsley Castle and the National Bird of Prey Centre. For those wishing for a little more history and culture the historic city of York is only a 40-minute drive away and a little further afield is the North Yorkshire coast and seaside towns of Whitby, Scarborough, and Bridlington. The Old Back Kitchen can be found at Bonfield Ghyll Farm, which sits high upon the North York Moors close to the pretty market town of Helmsley. This off-grid working sheep and beef farm is accessed via a rough farm track and has no mains electric or close neighbours; it forms part of the National Trust’s Bransdale Estate. There are walks straight from the door, through the wood, past the stream and out onto miles of open access moorland. The current tenants have sympathetically converted the old back kitchen and water house adjoining the main farmhouse to create an idyllic and romantic getaway from the stresses of everyday life.
The property dates back to 1707 and retains many of its original features. Accessed by stone steps through a shared garden area, the entrance hall has exposed beams and plenty of space for storing coats and walking boots. The living/dining room is packed with character, including sloping quarry tile floors and the Victorian cooking range and wash copper (decorative only). With a new wood burning stove in the open hearth this room provides a real cosy feel for the colder winter months. The mezzanine with its double bed is tucked away in the rafters and is accessed via steep ladder stairs with handrails; whilst there is a good head height, taller guests need to be aware of a couple of low beams on the way up. The glow from the fire below casts magical shadows on the ceiling. With a deep filled mattress and lots of warming throws, this room will certainly provide you with a great night’s sleep after a long day exploring the National Park. The kitchen sits to the rear of the property and offers a modern gas cooker and hob, whistling kettle, microwave and small fridge freezer as well as the original shallow sink and a pretty upcycled dresser and breakfast table. The original features continue in the shower room with the original water trough that once supplied the farmhouse forming the shower tray! The stream that once ran through it has been diverted and now runs past the kitchen window, where you can watch a variety of bird life on the birdfeeder. The Old Back Kitchen really is the place for you if you want a break away from it all.
The kitchen and entrance hall radiators, bathroom towel rail and hot water are heated by the wood fired Rayburn and water heating solar panels in the farmhouse, whilst the living room and a bedroom are heated via the wood burning stove. There is Wi-Fi signal up here, but it is not always 100% reliable and the TV reception can be a little hit and miss, but there are plenty of books to read, and board and card games to play; the owners have thought of everything. There’s even a pair of binoculars and bird books so you can spend a while enjoying the wildlife on offer within the National Park. The farm has no mains electric and generates power from an eco-friendly system comprising of a combination of solar panels and an Archimedes screw in the beck producing hydro-electricity. The lights run on LEDs and you will also find a low voltage hair dryer and travel steamer for you to use. There is sufficient electricity to charge phones, laptops and E bikes, but please do not bring any other appliances with you.
After a long day walking or cycling within the National Park why not relax and enjoy a drink on the private decking or soothe aching muscles in your own home-made wood-fired hot tub with its barbeque grill; whilst it has no jets or bubbles, it does have simply stunning views across the valley, or up at the stars, as the North York Moors has Dark Sky status. Helmsley is 7 miles away and is more famously known as ‘the jewel in Yorkshire’s crown’. Here you can find an array of pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, independent shops and convenience stores. A little further afield are the historic cities of York and Whitby. The Old Back Kitchen is the perfect place for you whether you enjoy walking or cycling or just want to get away from it all.

This historic, Grade II listed farm has been owned by the Hawnby Estate for many years and still retains many original features, giving this property real character. They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, and what an incredible kitchen this is! This room oozes character and certainly has the WOW factor! With a beamed ceiling still retaining original meat hooks, handmade worktops and cupboards, five oven Aga, central island with electric oven and hob, American-style fridge/freezer as well as a large dining table, this social area will soon become the heart of your holiday experience.
Beyond the living room is the snug area with piano for those with musical inclinations. Separate from the main living room this is perfect for any members of the group to have some time to themselves, perhaps curling up on one of the cosy chairs to devour a good book. Younger family members may enjoy using this area to play board games together in an evening or enjoying a movie on the Smart TV. It has wonderful views over the outdoor dining and BBQ area. The Byre is perfectly set in the delightful market town of Helmsley. The cottage itself many years ago was an old cow shed as the name suggests however the owners have given it the love and attention it deserves with a full renovation and made it a fantastic holiday retreat for couples with no expense meaning visitors are ensured of perfection throughout.
You enter the property into the open plan living/kitchen area. The kitchen is well equipped and well-presented and has all the necessities should you not want to dine out at the many restaurants close by. The living area has a comfortable sofa which is great to snuggle up on in front of the fabulous wood burner on those colder evenings. The property is open plan throughout except for the separate bathroom which offers a shower over the bath and heated towel rail. Towards the back of the property is a plush double bed with cosy linen guaranteeing a perfect night’s sleep after exploring this stunning area. To the side of the property, you also have a lovely little patio area with garden furniture giving you a great place to sit back and relax whilst enjoying a well-deserved glass of fizz. The Byre has plenty of character and has been lovingly decorated and furnished with exposed beams throughout giving you that lovely country home feeling.

Cherry Garth Cottages are located in the centre of Thornton le Dale, ’Yorkshire’s little gem’. Cherry Blossom has been named after the cherry trees which border the garden. The cottage has been built from beautiful traditional Yorkshire stone, and is tucked away in the grounds of the owner’s home Cherry Garth. It has an open plan living area with a welcoming wood burner to snuggle up in front of after a busy day out exploring the spectacular Yorkshire coast and countryside, and upon arrival you will be welcomed with a lovely welcome pack with tea, coffee and biscuits. There are lovely views from the property onto the garden and the bedroom window overlooks the paddock, where sheep graze.

The picturesque village of Thornton le Dale is located on the edge of the North York Moors, a mere one mile from Pickering. From here you can take a ride on the famous steam train to Grosmont, Goathland (aka Aidensfield in the classic TV series Heartbeat) and the seaside town of Whitby where you can climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey. Those looking for a quieter pace of life may prefer to walk the many footpaths and bridleways over the North York Moors.

This cosy detached cottage making a romantic retreat, is Grade II listed and dates back to 1760. It has been tastefully renovated to a very good standard and benefits from an underfloor heated limestone tiled floor throughout the ground floor. Outside there is a large, enclosed, riverside garden, on the opposite side of a road that leads directly into the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. It has a shared patio with a sitting-out area, a further riverside secluded seating area, garden furniture, BBQ and summerhouse. Although shared with the owners it is available to guests and their pets to enjoy at all times. Within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, East Ayton is a village just a few minutes’ drive from the seafront at Scarborough. The village has all the amenities you could wish for with a post office, shop, garage and local pub as well as an excellent fish restaurant. The cottage is just off the main street on the lane leading further into the National Park and towards Hackness. This property is an ideal place for the walkers or cyclists amongst you, with great trails right on your doorstep. From the large riverside orchard garden there are open views across the valley to the castle that dates back to 1390. Cycling is also very popular in the area as this forms part of the Tour de Yorkshire route. The Dalby Forest is close by with cycle trails for all abilities and home to the World Cup Trail, a challenging 4 mile route, or for beginners, there are plenty more leisurely routes. The cottage is an ideal base to visit all that Yorkshire has to offer from the North Yorkshire Moors to the Wolds and the beautiful east coast, and coarse fishing is available direct onto the River Derwent at the bottom of the garden with brown trout and grayling.
