The tidal island of Lindisfarne, locally known as Holy Island, can be seen from the beach and is accessible via a causeway twice daily. A further 2 miles up the coastline brings you to Waren Mill, which is steeped in history. Once an important port, its harbour has long since disappeared, silted up beneath the sands of the estuary. Budle Bay is a bird sanctuary and at low tide a vast expanse of mud flats is home to thousands of sea and land birds, making this location a haven for bird watchers. The historic market town of Alnwick, with its own castle, offers many facilities, just a short drive inland. A 20-minute walk will take you across the river to the village of Bardon Mill with picnic area, coffee shop/general store, a hotel serving a varied menu including Thai meals and drinks. From here catch the train - you can be in Newcastle or Carlisle in under 45 minutes. Nearby Haltwhistle, geographically acknowledged as ’the Centre of Britain’ has many amenities including a supermarket, independent shops, restaurant, cocktail bar, a sports centre, and an outdoor swimming pool.
