Head into Chatton: a gorgeous country village nestled in the pretty Northumbrian Valley, bordered by the Cheviots. The local hotel and restaurant serving excellent food, a well-stocked village store and Chatton art gallery compliment the quaint village atmosphere. Keen walkers are sure to be impressed by St Cuthberts Way, a 100-kilometre long-distance trail between the Scottish Borders town of Melrose and Lindisfarne off the coast of Northumberland, named after a 7th-century saint. The nearby town of Wooler is set along the last leg of the journey, so you needn’t traverse the full length. Wooler itself is just under 4 miles away and features a good range of shops, pubs, restaurants, and facilities. If you fancy something exciting, why not visit Chillingham Castle, only a short drive away, and book onto one of their ghost tours! Why not try something a little different? Discover your inner country-self and try clay pigeon shooting at Fowberry Moor Farm in Wooler, where they also offer wine tasting!
A 20-minute drive brings you to the popular village of Bamburgh a stunningly attractive small village set on the northern stretch of the Northumberland Coast. It is without doubt dominated by its magnificently striking castle that can be seen for miles around. Why not hit the waves yourself with a trip to the Farne Islands? Take a boat trip from Seahouses and see the Medieval Pele Tower and Victorian Lighthouse, as well as the famous seabird colony. Depending on the time of year, you might catch a glimpse of the friendly seals and puffins that visit the islands’ shores. Golfers flock to Bamburgh, where the Bamburgh Castle Golf Club offers a particularly picturesque round. It’s short but tough and boasts some of the best views in the country! The Willows is an attached single-storey cottage situated in a small village around 3 miles south of Amble. The accommodation is well presented throughout. The living room is spacious and leads to a bright and airy conservatory which overlooks the large fully enclosed garden at the rear. The dining kitchen is well equipped. There are two double bedrooms and two twin bedrooms along with a contemporary bathroom and additional shower room making this pet friendly property a suitable choice for the gathering of families and friends. As you drive into the country and leave the hustle and bustle behind, you can really feel at one with nature in this beautiful place. There is a luxurious family bathroom with bath and shower over and an additional downstairs separate toilet. Outside the grounds extend down to the stream, a perfect spot to sit and relax, you might even spot a fish or two swim by! Beat a retreat to the patio where you can take a dip in the hot tub or sit and just take in the joys of the countryside. There is a covered shelter with lighting, table, and chairs for al fresco suppers or for some campfire fun, cosy up round the fire pit and watch the stars - you’ll certainly be undisturbed.

A 20-minute walk will take you across the river to the village of Bardon Mill with picnic area, coffee shop/general store, a hotel serving a varied menu including Thai meals and drinks. From here catch the train - you can be in Newcastle or Carlisle in under 45 minutes. Nearby Haltwhistle, geographically acknowledged as ’the Centre of Britain’ has many amenities including a supermarket, independent shops, restaurant, cocktail bar, a sports centre, and an outdoor swimming pool. The location is excellent for exploring the spectacular scenery of the north of England, visit the famous Vindolanda Roman Fort, The Sill Landscape Discovery Centre, and the world-famous Sycamore Gap on Hadrian’s Wall. Nearby the historic market town of Hexham with stunning abbey, the oldest gaol in the country and an abundance of eclectic shops, restaurants and pubs. Well House is an imposing, lovingly furnished with Farrow & Ball colour schemes, Grade II listed home dating back to the early 1700s (circa 1640), which retains many of its original period features, being high ceilings and exposed beams. Formerly the Angel Inn, Well House faces the high street in the popular village of Belford. This property was believed to have been protected throughout war due to the property being the main source of water for the village, and amazingly the well still remains in the cellar of this historic property! Well House has significant historical local importance and legend. Directly next door to the property there is award-winning Well House Café which offers the most mouth-watering home cooked bakes and breakfasts, ideally located.

Occupying the first floor are two bedrooms, the first is the master suite, a luxurious kingsize room with a grand bathroom offering a large roll top bath and a double shower. The second bedroom is another spacious kingsize with its own en-suite. To the rear wing of the property there is a further room with two single beds. Belford, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a quaint village retreat in an excellent location for cyclists, walkers, historians, and families to explore Bamburgh, Seahouses, Berwick, Alnwick, Holy Islands and Cheviot Hills in Northumberland National Park. It also has pubs serving food, fish & chips, restaurants, newsagents, farm shop, museum, church, and supermarket, along with some great local walks. The picture-postcard, coastal village of Bamburgh, dominated by its majestic fortress and wide expanse of golden, sandy beach is only 5 miles away.

Stonyfield Cottage is the ideal get away for couples, friends or families, It offers a tranquil and relaxing location with beautiful countryside views. Set on the outskirts of Rochester, within the Northumberland National Park, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a designated Dark Sky area. The cottage is only a few hundred yards from the A68 up an old Roman road known as Bremenium Way. Rochester is very close to the popular, historical and picturesque village of Otterburn.
At the South-facing rear of the property, there is a large decked area with plenty of outdoor seating, looking out onto an expansive wildlife garden with far-reaching views towards Kielder Forest. The decked area also houses the hot tub where visitors are able to enjoy for the ultimate in relaxation and stargazing. In the winter months they can enjoy the most fabulous wood burning stove and cosy up in front of the large smart TV where you can enjoy Netflix and Amazon.
A sunroom and separate dining room ensure there is plenty of space for two families to spread out, along with a large living room and kitchen/diner. The area around Stonyfield Cottage is rural and unspoilt with lots of outdoor activities to enjoy including plenty of walks along the many footpaths and cycling around Kielder Forest and Kielder Water (which is only 15 miles via the Forest Drive route or a little further should you wish to take the main road route). Walking, Hiking and Fishing are particularly popular around the area. The Scottish Border at Carter Bar is a mere 12 miles so you can easily visit Scotland whilst holidaying at Stonyfield. The border towns of Hawick, Kelso and Jedburgh are also easily accessible from here. Of course, you will want to visit Hadrian’s Wall, maybe stop off at Housesteads Roman Fort or why not take a trip over to the Northumberland Heritage Coast, only 32 miles to Warkworth Beach where you can spend a wonderful day exploring castles and beaches up and down this golden coastline.

The village of Quebec has a welcoming community, with a lovely tearoom opposite serving everything from a hearty breakfast to afternoon tea, and an assortment of pubs within a mile all serving good hearty meals. Nearby, the village of Lanchester has a good selection of restaurants, pubs and shops, whilst the villages of Langley Park and Esh Winning have well stocked stores, butcher and bakery.

This is a great spot for walkers and cyclists with many established public footpaths from the village leading into the scenic countryside of County Durham. Close by, is the historic City of Durham, awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status, where you can visit the cathedral and castle or enjoy beautiful riverside walks, take a boat out on the river or a leisurely riverboat cruise. The Lumiere Festival takes place every couple of years in November and brings the city to life with live art, music and light shows in the open air theatre that the city becomes.

Visit the fabulous Kynren outdoor spectacle in nearby Bishop Auckland (but do book in advance). A little further afield but still within an easy 30-minute drive, guests will be able to take a day trip out to the popular Beamish Living Museum, see the famous Angel of the North statue in Gateshead, enjoy a day’s shopping at the Metro Centre and explore the vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The heritage coast is within an hour’s drive, making Quebec a perfect location.

Fish and chips are a must whilst staying in Amble with some situated on the harbour. The town has a thriving Sunday morning market and a selection of little shopping pods ideal for browsing. The beach huts are set on the shore and a walk along the pier is a delight for all ages. Take a boat ride over to Coquet Island or enjoy a leisurely walk along to Warkworth Castle, only a couple of miles away, a picture postcard village steeped in history. Nearby Alnwick, famed for the castle and gardens, is a short drive as is the start of the Heritage Coast stretching all the way up to Berwick on Tweed AONB.

The local Sunday market is bustling with visitors and locals, why not pop by into the little shopping pods and the Lobster Fishery to see how lobsters are grown, or perhaps pick up some fresh seafood.
Trips to Coquet Island are a wonderful treat in the summer, or alternatively take a walk along the coastal path to Warkworth to see the castle and riverside, a lovely morning out. Nearby Alnwick is home to the famous castle used in the Harry Potter films, whilst the heritage coast line Area of Natural Beauty stretches from here up to Berwick-on-Tweed. Days out can be as diverse as you wish, head over to Hadrian’s Wall or onto the National Park, or perhaps during a rainy day, take a trip to the Metro Centre for some retail therapy, one of the largest in the UK. No matter your age there is plenty to see and do in this beautiful area, the county of Northumberland is truly an unspoilt county which you will be sure to want to return another time.
