Set in a convenient location, they are within walking distance of the locally run pub, and a short drive away from the visitor attractions of Ludlow with its castle and racecourse, Bridgnorth, Ironbridge and Much Wenlock. Also worth visiting are the River Severn, famous for its tidal bore, the River Teme and the Severn Valley Railway. Other local attractions include Rays Farm, the inland funicular railway and Daniels Mill. The medieval town of Ludlow, 5 miles, has a racecourse, 13th century castle, wonderful architecture, street markets, antique shops and Michelin-starred restaurants. Visit Church Stretton, known as Little Switzerland, Ironbridge and Shrewsbury, with its wonderful buildings, shops and riverside walks. Fishing and golf can be found within 5 miles. A grand old country house, still a family home – Buntingsdale Hall, an 18th Century masterpiece, stands in its own grounds overlooking the River Tern not far from the pretty county town of Market Drayton.
Approached down a mile long private drive, the principal apartment of the Victorian wing is yours. Following sensitive modernisation the apartment has all the comfort one expects but the grand bedrooms and drawing room with 18 ft. high ceilings retain all their Victorian splendour.
Think huge; supper in an enormous eat-in family kitchen, cocktail hour in the elegant living room. Relax on the big sofas, mix cocktails from the 1950s bar cart in front of the fire; maybe find out who killed Miss Scarlet from the board games trunk, while the little ones build wooden trains from the kids’ trunk - they’ll be too busy to look at their phones! After supper, the party continues down in the former servant’s hall, now a games room, with a full size snooker table, roulette wheel, darts, table tennis and roaring fire.
Five bedrooms, classic country house decor of antiques and florals, four en-suite bathrooms (two baths, two showers), family bathroom. Cotton bed linen throughout, with wool throws and lots of cushions, guests frequently comment on our comfortable beds.
Outside there’s a private secluded courtyard with a BBQ and a big table for all, and walks directly from the door. Do bring Fido; you can all walk a couple of miles across the fields to the pub in Market Drayton which has hearty food all day, brews its own beer, loves dogs and kids, with big tables and fires.
Within the estate is a private lake -carry one of our kayaks down with your picnic and barbecue gear and enjoy the stars. One of the most unspoilt parts of the UK for stargazing. Around you are all kinds of wildlife rarely glimpsed, birds of prey, kingfishers, badgers and wild fishing. Old fashioned fun: children can make camps and swing on trees, paddle. There’s a boat or they can borrow a bike and ride down the private drive to swim in the local millpond. There’s a fire pit with straw bales for a warm fire in the evening. There are several National Trust and English Heritage properties and gardens within easy driving distance, as well as an eclectic mix of independent shops in Shrewsbury. If your hungry after all the exploring, try the hearty food in the nearby pubs, seek out the local tea shops, peruse the farmers’ markets, head to Ludlow for fine fayre or pop over the Welsh border for ice cream made fresh on a farm, or just treat yourself to a relaxing night in. Formerly a stone outbuilding and artists’s studio, the cottage is a blend of original features and refurbished country cosiness. Pick up a bottle of wine in the village shop, watch the sun go down from the patio or orchard, cook yourself something nice in the well-equipped kitchen and settle down in front of the wood burner. Friary Cottage is a Grade II Listed, detached and renovated town cottage. Well-positioned and beautifully presented with some antique furniture, it boasts original, quirky features and is only a 5-minute walk from the centre of the town and a 3-minute walk from Ludlow’s train station. A cosy wood burner and gas fired Aga are amongst the treasures of the house. From the sun room/conservatory there is a new garden room to enjoy. Guests can also enjoy a private enclosed rear garden, a separate, small walled courtyard, and it is located on one of the most prominent streets of this charming medieval town. Ludlow is overshadowed by its own majestic castle, as it was once, like York, a seat of Government in Tudor and Stuart England. Now hosting the famous food festivals and events throughout the year, there is always a lively atmosphere here. It has a reputation for fine foods, award-winning restaurants, speciality and antique shops and even a racecourse. An excellent base to explore the unrivalled countryside for picnicking and walking or nearby towns such as Bridgnorth and Bewdley (Severn Valley Railway), Ironbridge, Much Wenlock, Church Stretton, Tenbury Wells and Leominster. The cathedral city of Hereford with its chained library and Mappa Mundi are all within a short drive, as are historic houses such as Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Croft Castle, Stokesay Castle and Powis Castle on the Welsh borders. Acton Scott, an historic working farm and the Secret Hills Discovery Centre are all just a few of the nearby attractions, so you will never be short of something to see. They are now connected by the steepest inland funicular railway in Britain.
Bridgnorth is fortunate to have many attractions scattered around its luscious countryside. You can have an unforgettable day’s time travel by steam railway. Just a short car journey takes you to the world famous Ironbridge and its popular museums, The Royal Air Force Museum and Boscobel House. A few miles upstream of Bridgnorth is Shrewsbury, England’s finest Tudor town, which has one of the best waterfronts, a wide variety of shops, bars and a riverside theatre. Attingham Park, Benthall Hall, Dudmaston Hall, Rays Farm Country Matters, Much Wenlock, West Midland Safari Park, Cleobury Mortimer and Ludlow are also well worth a visit. Just 4 miles is the centre of Bridgnorth, with its castle ruins, fantastic river and countryside views, two railways, one steam and one funicular railway, and a good selection of shops bars and restaurants. Shropshire has many quaint towns and villages to visit including Much Wenlock, Ironbridge, Ludlow and Shrewsbury, all are accessible within a 30-minute drive. Activity centres are dotted around the county offering anything from clay shooting, high ropes and canoeing to mountain biking and Segway and quad trekking. Nearby is also the historical National Trust Attingham Park, Wenlock Edge and Cardingmill Valley, as well as Stokesay and Ludlow castles. The Secret Hills Discovery Centre and Acton Scott Working Farm are great for children, and the glider centre on the Long Mynd and horse racing at Ludlow are also available nearby. The Onny Trail is on the doorstep leading to walks on Wart Hill, Hopesay Hill on the Shropshire Way, and the Jack Mytton Way which goes up over the long Mynd. It has an enviable position close to the road networks, yet has fields and woodland to the rear. The field across the road belongs to the owners and has the River Onny running along the bottom where you can relax and try your hand at some wild fishing. The cottage has its own private patio area with sole use of a six-seater hot tub.
Shropshire is a great area to visit with plenty of activities and places to visit within a short distance. Some of the attractions include Acton Scott Working Farm, Secret Hills Discovery Centre, Stokesay Castle, and the vibrant market town of Ludlow with its castle, racecourse, weekly markets, and numerous food fairs held throughout the year. The Glider Centre on the Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley (National Trust) is a must for adrenaline lovers. The beautiful market town of Ludlow, well known for its food festival and Historic Shrewsbury is set on the banks of the River Severn and offers a great selection of shops, bars, and restaurants. While in nearby Condover there is an activity centre where family activities include low ropes, high ropes, kayaking, and laser tag. The Edge Adventure Activity Centre at Much Wenlock offers quad bike trekking, clay shooting, mountain boarding, and much more.
For a more relaxed approach to your holiday there are some lovely towns and areas to visit such as Bridgnorth with the Severn Valley Railway, inland funicular railway, and the historic Ironbridge gorge and museums. From the property within an hour’s drive, there are Powys Castle, Berrington Hall, and Attingham Park all National Trust properties and just a little further you will find Chirk Castle, Erddig, and Croft Castle.
