- Peebles, ScotlandThe perfect getaway destination, this pretty cottage sits at the heart of a farm in the Upper Tweed valley on the Scottish Borders. Dawyck Botanic Garden and Stobo Castle Health Spa are situated locally, whilst the market towns of Peebles and Biggar, with their excellent range of pubs and restaurants, are both a 15-minute drive. The living room of Nettlebush Cottage is wonderfully light, and has a lovely wood burner to sit in front of whilst spending a cosy night in. French doors, with level access, lead to the patio and the steep natural garden, and it’s a delight to wake up in the morning to enjoy the view down to the River Tweed and the hills above the valley. The property is set on a working sheep farm with good walks from the door, and the John Buchan Way begins in Broughton, 2½ miles away. Fishing, cycling and mountain biking are all local pursuits with the facilities at Glentress, 20 minutes’ drive. Edinburgh is a scenic, hour’s drive north and is a wonderful place to experience at any time of year, but especially for the vibrant atmosphere during the Edinburgh Festival in August and spectacular celebrations at New Year. - Kelso, ScotlandWith stunning views that the Borders is famous for, The Annex at Fernyrig is the idyllic retreat for a couple looking to enjoy some time together, or to explore the Scottish Borders and the north of England. Just a few hunderd yards north of the actual border on the River Tweed, this beautiful, semi-detached property, adjacent to the owner’s home, was completely updated and upgraded in late 2019 to a high standard, with great attention to detail. It now boasts features such as underfloor heated bamboo and ceramic tiled floors, cosy wood burner and a south west-facing garden to enjoy the views across the Tweed Valley to the Cheviots and beyond.
The living room has a wood burner for those colder evenings and while the TV is there, we’re convinced that you’ll spend more time looking out the windows. Also finished well is the kitchen with modern appliances and a spacious layout with a dining area. A door in the hall separates the bathroom and bedroom from the rest of the property. The main bathroom has underfloor heating and a luxury 4 piece suite with bath and separate walk-in double shower. The property sleeps two guests in a comfortable and well-proportioned double room, and has the ability to accommodate a further two guests on a double sofa bed in the living room. Well behaved pets are welcome in the property and outside there is a purpose built kennel if required as well as parking for 2 cars.
Surrounding villages and towns nearby include Birgham, Coldstream and Kelso, with the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed (BR main Newcastle/Edinburgh rail link) and coastal beaches some 17 miles to the east. Fishing can be arranged on the nearby River Tweed and during the appropriate seasons, the owner may be able to arrange some country sports for guests. - Hawick, ScotlandJust a few minutes walk from the pretty conservation village of Denholm with its village greens, good pubs and a restaurant, this spacious cottage is privately situated near the entrance to the owner’s home, which is ¼-mile further on. Set in mature woodland and a small stream bordering the open garden, it’s an idyllic place for children to play and explore, or for others to simply soak up the peace and tranquillity. Bright, welcoming and comfortably furnished, this is a great base for discovering the lovely Borders region. Kelso and Melrose have lots of interest with Floors Castle, Mellerstain House, ancient abbeys and an array of independent shops and good places to eat. Minto Golf Course is just ½-mile and there is fishing on the River Teviot and the River Tweed. There are hill walks aplenty nearby and cycling on quiet roads, or head for the Glentress Forest to get your adrenalin fix. Single-storey, it is situated on the edge of a smallholding with sheep, midway between the picturesque market town of Biggar and the small village of Broughton, 3 miles away and home of Broughton Brewery and a tea room, doubling as a local pub at the weekend.
There is good walking and cycling from the doorstep with Broughton Heights and Trahenna Hill well worth the climb for the glorious views. Biggar has a great selection of excellent local food producers and hosts a surprising range of events throughout the year. Peebles, 15 miles away has good restaurants, galleries and independent shops. Glentress mountain bike trails are 17 miles away and Innerleithen 21½ miles. Edinburgh, using the park and ride, is a day’s entertainment while Glasgow is equally easily enjoyed. Fishing can be found nearby.
