The market town of Ulverston, 5 miles, offers a choice of shops, inns and restaurants, a championship golf course with superb views over Morecambe Bay, an excellent sports complex with swimming-pool and a Laurel and Hardy museum, Stan Laurel was born in the town. Many activities can be enjoyed in the immediate vicinity, including walking on fell, lakeside or mountain, sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing. The shores of Morecambe Bay are just 2½ miles away, where sea fishing is available. At the Grizedale Forest Enterprise Centre, 4 miles, mountain bikes can be hired to cycle along the many forest trails which link the majority of the numerous stone and wood sculptures scattered among the trees. Kendal, the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’, is well worth a visit for its museums, art galleries and pretty cafés and tearooms. - Caldbeck Fells, EnglandThis fabulous semi-detached barn conversion provides a perfect retreat for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Set adjacent to the owner’s home and amongst farmland it is ideal for wildlife spotting with deer roaming in the front field and red squirrels being frequent visitors to the bird feeder right outside the kitchen window.
It is situated down a long farm track, on the edge of the Lake District National Park and on the recognised National Cycle Route 7, which makes up part of the famous sea to sea route. It’s five miles from Hesket New Market, in a truly tranquil location. Mere Croft was converted to a good standard, with tiled floors, gorgeous high beamed ceilings and an oak staircase. It has great facilities for two couples, including Wi-Fi and two en-suite bedrooms, one of which is a ground floor walk in shower, convenient for guests with mobility problems.
Just down the road is the beautiful, historic Hutton in the Forest which hosts regular events including Potfest (the international ceramics festival) and the local Skelton Show. The location is perfect to explore north and east Lakeland, the Eden Valley, Carlisle and the Scottish Borders.
