About this property

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Cumbrian countryside, the dog-friendly George and the Dragon, presents an idyllic retreat for both pets and their owners. This charming country Inn, with its inviting dog-friendly rooms, has been lovingly restored by owner Charles Lowther who loves dogs and who's family have 10 in total! The hotel offers delicious home grown produce, sourced from the Lowther Estate, and a wonderfully warm welcome to humans and canine friends alike. The pub's location is ideal for those seeking to immerse themselves in nature, surrounded as it is by some of the most breathtaking walks Cumbria has to offer. Whether it's a leisurely stroll through the fields or an adventurous hike up Cat Bells, the hotel makes a great getaway for furry friends.

The decor strikes a perfect balance between rustic charm and contemporary comfort. Its super stylish interiors, adorned with warm, earthy tones and traditional furnishings, evoke a sense of homely warmth, making it a cosy canine-friendly escape. The rooms follow this theme, offering a blend of comfort and elegance.

When it comes to dining, the George and Dragon  has a field to fork approach. The award winning menu showcases the best of local produce, featuring hearty, flavorsome dishes that reflect the richness of Cumbrian cuisine. The pub prides itself on its dog welcoming atmosphere where you can dine with your dog in the bar area with log fires blazing.

This country pub is more than just a place to stay; it's a destination that promises a memorable dog-friendly escape. Its combination of scenic location, stylish decor, and fabulous food makes the George and the Dragon an ideal choice for those seeking a peaceful retreat with their beloved pets. And to make them feel extra special, dogs will also be provided with a doggy welcome pack including a treat and map of the local walks. There are lovely walks on the doorstep and Lowther Castle and Gardens nearby.

Dine with Your Dog

You can dine with your dog in the bar area of the hotel which serves exactly the same delicious menu as in the main restaurant. The Inn has won many awards for its food which is innovative with a field to fork approach. The hotel breed their own pedigree shorthorns and rare breed pork; the roe deer and red deer venison they serve is from their woods and fells. They also grow seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs in their kitchen gardens at Askham Hall, just two miles down the road. They forage the land for wild garlic, mushrooms and berries and their free-range fell lamb comes from their own flock of Rough Fells which is looked after by the Inn's owner Charles up on the fells above Askham. They are guardians of the fell, making the most of the rich variety of herbs and grasses it offers, which gives them a wonderful rich flavour. Head Chef Gareth Webster, an exceptional talent, changes the main menu regularly, depending on what produce is brought in by the gardeners and local suppliers. Especially recommended are the fresh pies that Gareth makes daily!

Bow wow factor

Must be their super dog-friendly ethos - owner Charles loves dogs and they will feel totally at home in this super stylish relaxed Inn with their own doggy welcome kit and fabulous walks from the door.
