There is wonderful scenic walking from the doorstep into the Marshwood Vale and on the coast some stunning scenery overlooking the whole of Lyme Bay from Portland down to Torquay and, not for the faint hearted, walking up to the top of Golden Cap - the highest point on England’s South coast with breath taking views. Guests can enjoy this beautiful stretch of coast, taking in some fossil hunting, boating, swimming, and golf nearby. Explore the many little seaside resorts such as West Bay, Eype, Sidmouth, Beer and Seaton and in particular Lyme Regis with its traditional harbour, famous Cob and variety of little shops. Further afield within easy driving is Weymouth with its Blue Flag sandy beach, Sealife centre, Time Walk and many other family attractions or going west, days out at Exeter with its cathedral, catacombs, shops and restaurants. Dogs are welcome to come and stay and there is plenty of good walks locally. The centre of St Bees has an excellent selection of local pubs and restaurants and if you want to leave the car behind you can take the train to many local towns. St Bees station, a number of pubs, restaurants and the local convenience store are all within 200 yards of the property. The famous St Bees priory, dating back to the 11th century is well worth a visit and can be reached within a 5-minute walk. If you like outdoor adventure, including walking, cycling and climbing, you are surrounded by some amazing scenery and you are only a 10-mile drive from the Lake District National Park, your nearest lake is Ennerdale which is regarded as one of the most unspoilt and natural parts of the Lake District. It is teaming with wildlife including buzzards, red squirrels and osprey to name a few. If you want to climb the highest mountain in England you can reach Wasdale Head in just 18 miles, which gives you the shortest route to the summit of Scafell Pike. The Burrow has been beautifully restored to a good standard making your stay comfortable. It was once a thriving gunpowder works dating back to 1798 and part of Low Wood Mill gunpowder works. With the multi-fuel burner in the living area and the underfloor heating, you can be toasty warm on those cold winter evenings and in the summer you can sit out on the patio and enjoy views and access to the paddock. This collection of 17th century stone, semi-detached barn conversions (refs 30378, 30379, 30380, 30381, 30382 and 30383), located in the owners’ grounds, sit in a secluded spot, just yards away from the South West Coastal Path and the picturesque Millendreath Beach, which is close to Looe on Cornwall’s beautiful south coast. Millendreath has a licenced café providing local ales and home-cooked food right on the sand. Just a mile away is another beach at Seaton, with a local pub and beach bar – another great day out for families and couples alike. The resort of Looe is home to famous fish markets which are supplied daily with fresh fish from the day boats that leave the quaint working harbour. Walk the lanes that lead to the harbour and wide expanse of golden sand, buy some fresh seafood for a special meal or visit one of the multitudes of restaurants that the town offers. The coastal path passes close to the property and provides beautiful walks and views along the dramatic coastline. Polperro is a quaint, historic fishing village, just a short distance away from the coast. There are numerous cycle routes around the area and many surfing spots along the coast. Various tourist attractions are nearby, including The Monkey Sanctuary, many National Trust houses and gardens along with golf courses to visit. The Adrenalin Quarry is a must for the adventurous and it is only a short drive away. The Eden Project is also within easy driving distance and it provides an exceptional day out, as does Padstow, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Fowey, a picturesque seafaring town providing sailing, kayaking and pleasure trips along the River Fowey. Deep sea fishing and other water sports can all be enjoyed in Looe, along with woodland and coastal walks nearby. To the east of the town is the historic city of Plymouth, with its National Marine Aquarium, theatres, cinemas, bowling and shopping, which can be reached from the historic village of Kingsand, right into Barbican, while to the west is Fowey, home to the royal sailing regatta and many galleries, shops and restaurants. Shilbottle is located midway between the picture perfect coastal village of Alnmouth to the east and the historic market town of Alnwick to the north west, both being a mere 4 miles from your door. Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and film location for Harry Potter’s ‘Hogwarts’, is a popular visitor attraction. Another place thats worth a visit is Alnwick Gardens - a spectacular interpretation of a formal garden, including a grand cascade waterfall and where guests can dine in the restaurant of the largest tree house in Europe. There is a wide array of facilities available within this lovely market town, including independent shops, tea rooms, a cinema/playhouse and one of the largest second-hand book shops in the UK. The pretty seaside village of Alnmouth boasts a vast golden sandy beach and there is a variety of good restaurants, pubs, tea rooms and gift shops. Golf enthusiasts will delight in two courses, one being a fine 9-hole course adjacent to the beach and the other being a challenging 18-hole course at Foxton enjoying panoramic views. Travel 10 miles north east to the seaside holiday village of Beadnell, popular for watersports enthusiasts.
Visit Seahouses a further 2 miles north and take a boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the puffins at play (in season). Bamburgh Castle is only an extra 3 miles up this stunning coastline.
