Inland you are on the doorstep of the southern gateway to the Norfolk Broads National Park and Oulton Broad. Lowestoft has two popular piers, one holds classic seaside entertainment and the other has an all year round restaurant with wonderful views of Lowestoft’s beautiful sandy beach, as you would expect from this seaside destination. The Owl Barn is in a secluded spot, at a Hobby Farm within the owner’s grounds, there are chickens, turkey’s and ducks on site – Children are welcome to help with egg collection. Up to two well behaved dogs (kept on leads) are welcome and there are also dog kennels provided adjacent to the property in a shady spot, if you wish to go out for the day, sole use for Owl Barn guests. An enclosed horse paddock is also available for dogs to run free, horses accepted by request and private arrangement. The Hall lies within the Vale of Belvoir, close to the junction with the counties of Leicestershire and Lincolnshire. The historic, creatively converted hall is a wonderful base from which to explore not only the close by villages, but also the nearby Belvoir Castle and directly across the road from the fabulous Kilvington Lakes. Kilvington Lakes is a must with its 3 lakes and being famous for twitchers, located a stone’s throw from the hall. Angling is also very popular with the day passes on the lakes and reservoir of Belvoir Estates and Rutland Water. Within a 30-minute drive of The Old WI Hall is the magnificent Belton House with its Swiss chalet style Boat House, Bellmount Tower and the well-kept landscapes of Londonthorpe Wood. There is also a train station, the line through Taynuilt runs from Glasgow to Oban so you can have a day in the city or head to the islands. Taynuilt’s golf course is just a few minutes’ walk from the cottage and offers 9 holes.
The bustling Victorian town of Oban known as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’ is just 20 minutes away by carand offers shops, bars, seafood restaurants, a cinema and leisure centre. Whisky lovers can visit the Oban Distillery to learn how it’s all made. Regular boat trips leave the busy harbour bound for the Inner Hebridean Islands, including Mull, Iona and the Treshnish Isles with their comical puffins.
Enjoy leisurely forest walks, horseriding, fishing, sailing, diving and golf, or for the more adventurous, Glen Nevis, one of the Highland’s most famous glens and the location of scenes from Harry Potter and Braveheart, is only a short drive and offers stunning scenery and bracing walks. The National Trust site of Sutton Hoo can be found at Woodbridge, 26 miles away, where you can discover the story of the Anglo-Saxons at the burial ground of the kings. Just 4 miles away is the small historic town of Eye, which has an interesting range of independent shops, antique and interior shops, a deli, butcher, cafés and pubs. Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens is 6¼ miles away, or visit the market town of Diss, 6 miles, with its supermarkets, shops, cafés, golf course, leisure centre with swimming pool, and direct rail links to London. The Isle of Anglesey Coastal Footpath is nearby and is a great way to explore the 125 miles of dramatic coastline.
