Other interesting days out could include the V&A Museum, an excellent museum of art and design, hill walking in one of the five Angus Glens with their stunning hill and loch scenery approximately an hour’s drive away, golf at one of the many other superb courses in the area, horse riding, fishing, skiing at Glenshee and sailing. Dundee is only a short drive away, with the V&A design museum, the RSS Discovery ship and Verdant Works, a restored mill housing interactive displays, all of which are must-see excursions to the city. There are golf courses abound in the area and hillwalkers are well catered for in the surrounding countryside. The Cairngorms National Park, the Malt Whisky Trail and the ski centre at Glenshee are all within easy reach, offering a wide range of activities whatever the weather and time of year. Within the stately Kinnaird Castle, these three luxuriously appointed apartments, offer the discerning guest an opportunity for gracious living and can be enjoyed in every season. The three properties can be combined as they can be linked with one another and as such are perfect for a special occasion.
Lying between the Montrose Basin and Brechin, adjoining the River Southesk, Kinnaird Estate has been in the owners’ family since 1400 and covers some 7,000 acres of low lying land. There is a huge variety of wildlife to be seen, including red squirrels, woodpeckers, owls and ospreys, whilst the River Southesk is home to salmon and even freshwater pearls. Within the immediate grounds of the castle there are many paths laid out for guests, leading to follies and fine views on the way to the river and estate lake. Enjoy a barbecue or a game of tennis on the private court, or take a leisurely cycle on one of the many quiet roads which cross through the estate.
The owner can provide catering packs for the first evening and first morning on request, including a breakfast pack (£10) or a dinner pack (£15). The owner will leave coffees, teas, cereals, farmhouse bread, butter, marmalade and jams, together with fruit and yogurt in the kitchen, along with bacon and eggs. They can also leave a homemade supper (main course and pudding) for heating up in the apartment.
The Lauderdale is situated on the first floor and features the main family bedrooms of previous generations – all extremely comfortable and generous in size, with spacious sitting areas where you can relax and soak up the atmosphere. All are en-suite with updated bathrooms and gallons of hot water. There is an open plan living/kitchen with a more modern feel with plenty of space for cooking and dining. Druid’s Knowe sits in a superb position on the outskirts of the little hamlet of Tarfside, in the heart of Glen Esk.
Surrounded by gorgeous scenery this wonderful house has been totally and sympathetically refurbished and modernised right down to the last detail, but still retaining its original character. This is a perfect property if you love the great outdoors, appreciate the splendour of the Scottish countryside and are looking for rest and relaxation in an unspoilt and peaceful location.
The interior features a living room with wood burner on open plan to a well fitted kitchen, three double bedrooms (one on the ground floor) and two bathrooms, while outside there are gardens front and back, where you can sit and soak up the peace and quiet. Tarfside and Glenesk are good starting points for some excellent walks amongst stunning scenery and diverse wildlife. A few miles west of Tarfside is Mount Keen, Scotland’s most easterly Munro. Just along from the house is Glenesk Retreat and Folk Museum, gift shop and an art gallery. The museum is dedicated to the heritage, history and culture of Glenesk and focuses on the life of the rural community. At the bottom of the glen you can travel the length of the Victorian Heritage Trail, passing through Fettercairn with its Gothic Arch and local Distillery (where tours can be taken) up through Cairn o’ Mount and into Royal Deeside, ending at Balmoral Castle.
There is ample fishing and golf in the area as well as some good eating places or why not visit the beautiful beaches on the east coast at Montrose, Lunan Bay and St Cyrus.
