This charming characterful, detached cottage rests in Taynuilt near Connel, Argyll & Bute. Off-road parking. En-suite master bedroom. Stunning views. Oban 11.6 miles; Inveraray 25.5 miles.

At the south end of the coastal road just outside Colintraive, hidden amongst the mature gardens, is Dunyvaig a well-appointed detached property sitting almost on the water’s edge of the Kyles of Bute. From the large feature windows one can enjoy the back and forth of boats that use the Kyles of Bute to get to Tighnabruaich and beyond to the north, and Rothesay and beyond to the south. You can sense the peacefulness of the water from the comfort of the sofa in the living room or from the garden. It is perfect for families, groups or even couples who want some extra space to go with the peace and quiet.
Outside there is a sitting-out area to take advantage of the good weather, and the lush vegetation all around ensures complete privacy. Inside, the property has a double bedroom, a bedroom with twin beds that can be made into a double (bed linen provided), and two single bedrooms. There is a main shower room with a large shower cubicle as well as a second shower room just off the utility room. The well-equipped kitchen has all that you would require to prepare lunches and dinners, and the separate dining room is able to accommodate all guests comfortably.
The surrounding area is perfect for walkers, cyclists and bird watchers. Rothesay can be reached in 10 minutes on the Colintraive to Rhubodach ferry, which is less than a 2-minute crossing to the Isle of Bute. Tighnabruaich is worth a visit, it’s a real draw in the summer months and only a 30-minute drive. The viewing point on the way provides the best view you can get of the Kyles of Bute and surrounding areas. A little further, another 30 minutes, and you can get the ferry from Portavadie to Tarbert, and to some of the freshest sea food from various local establishments. In Portvadie itself, you can enjoy the marina with its spa and restaurant, a wonderful place where you can relax. Beach 9½ miles. Shop and pub serving food ½ mile.

In a magnificent setting by the sea, Ardmaddy Castle sits in its own bay with unrivalled views over Seil Sound and the world famous local Slate Islands, designated one of Scotland’s National Scenic Areas. Graded ‘4 Star’ by the Scottish Tourist Board, these four cottages (SBZ, SRW and SRY) and Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) are set in secluded, peaceful locations around the estate and offer an ideal base for exploring this stunning part of the West Coast of Scotland.
The Stables (SBZ) is and immaculate and sensitive conversion of the former stables overlooks Ardmaddy Bay and is furnished to Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ standard. Modern and comfortable, it still retains much of its traditional character and warmth, and has patio doors overlooking the sea. All four bedrooms are tastefully furnished and have fitted cupboards.
The castle’s spectacular gardens are open all year round through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and are a delight for gardening enthusiasts. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife with porpoise, dolphins, basking sharks, otters, deer, eagles and wealth of seabirds often seen. Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for guests to hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy’s stocked hill loch. Guests can also use the castle’s tennis court.
The bustling harbour town of Oban known as the ‘Gateway to the Islands’ is only 12 miles away and has wonderful seafood restaurants, shops and bars. From Oban there are boat trips to the Inner Hebridean Isles, including Mull, Iona, Staffa, Colonsay and Tiree. For the outdoor enthusiast, local activities include horse riding, coasteering, canyoning, canoeing, sailing, diving and golf. Fort William and Glencoe are a short drive away offering very popular climbing and skiing. Explore beautiful gardens and ruined castles in an area rich in historical legacy or take a leisurely walk or cycle along one of the many forest tracks. Visit Bonawe Iron Works, Cruachan Hollow Mountain, the Sealife Centre and Inveraray Jail. Or relax and enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty surrounding the cottages at Ardmaddy. Sithean (meaning ’fairy knoll’ in Gaelic) is built atop a wooded hillside overlooking lovely Glen Lonan on a working, regeneratively managed, hill farm. Self-contained and peaceful, the house design allows an intimate connection with the birch woods on the lower level, whilst the living space has a south and west facing dining area, commanding spectacular views of Loch Etive, ’The Shepherds of Glencoe’ to the north, and Ben Cruachan on the east.
Equally well-suited for couples, small groups and families, there’s a large front porch, ideally suited for drying wet outdoor gear, leading into the well-equipped kitchen and utility areas on the main floor. The living, kitchen and dining areas are open plan with vaulted ceilings, and attractively divided by a split-level floor and earth brick walls. Cosy and warm in all weathers, there is a wood burner in the living area, with underfloor heating throughout the house. Also on this floor is a double bedroom with a galleried balcony equipped with twin beds, served by an en-suite Category 2 shower room.
On the lower level, where you feel part of the surrounding woodland, there is a double bedroom, a twin room and a bathroom with sauna, which has direct access onto a decking area. Energy conservation was an important factor in the design of the house; the earth sheltered lower floor is protected from prevailing winds, and the living spaces upstairs allow for passive solar gains as well as natural lighting and ventilation.
The farm is home to a wealth of wildlife; hen harriers and other birds of prey, red and roe deer, red squirrels, black and red grouse, golden eagles and white-tailed eagles, foxes and pine martens, just some of the wildlife which enjoy the varied habitats.
Perfect as a base for exploring the hills, woodlands, and coastlines of Argyll, Sithean is conveniently close to the A85 for easy access to many Argyll attractions. Taynuilt village centre is just a 5-minute drive with a main line railway station, a general store, post office, butchers, hairdressers, café, craft shop and a 9-hole golf course. Ideal for walkers and cyclists, Sithean sits close to the rural lane network forming part of the National Cycle Route 78, which stretches from Oban to Fort William.

Close by is the beautiful inland Loch Awe and fantastic forestry walks through nearby Fearnoch and Glen Nant. Ben Cruachan offers more challenging walking but can be viewed from all around. You can also visit inside the mountain at the Hollow Mountain Visitor Centre. There are several inns and hotels serving food within a short drive. The busy west coast town of Oban, the Gateway to the Isles is within 12 miles’ drive either along the main road (A85) or through enchanting Glen Lonan. Oban has an interesting selection of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, a whisky distillery, and various supermarkets. You can catch a short ferry trip from Oban to one of the Inner Hebrides, including Mull, Staffa, and Iona. There is plenty to do in the area and lots of attractions for days out, including trips to Glencoe, Ben Nevis, and the islands of Kerrera and Easdale to name but a few.

The cottage has the additional benefit of a large front deck overlooking the water’s shore only 3m away from the end of the garden. Guests can, fish for their tea (rods in the cottage) launch a kayak or just rest on the pebble beach and watch for our resident porpoises and seals playing in the Loch. Or you could take a walk along to the local Ardentinny pub and bistro for a warm welcome, and on a fine day grab a table on their beautiful Lochside deck - booking advised for food.
Ardentinny’s sandy beach where the Cowal hills and forest tumble down to the shore is a short stroll from the cottage’s front door and opens into some spectacular trails.
Nearby, the magnificent woodland gardens at Benmore Botanic Gardens are well worth a visit and the incredible Pucks Glen is a must-see for those who love a mystical landscape of gorges and waterfalls. Whilst the town of Dunoon is within easy reach (there is a bus directly from Ardentinny) and has a good selection of shops, pubs and restaurants when in Dunoon check out the Queens Hall and Burgh Hall for excellent music gigs and entertainment and also try Dunoon’s little cinema for a night at the movies Take a Wreckspeditions or Waverley paddle steamer cruise and explore Loch Long and Kyles of Bute.
