The picturesque fishing town of Aberaeron is only six miles away with its large harbour encased by pastel-shaded Georgian houses. A short drive inland leads to the rural and traditional towns of Lampeter and Tregaron, where the Welsh language is mostly used by the locals. Tregaron feels almost untouched by the 21st century and is a bastion of the Welsh language and culture. The river running through the town centre leads to Cors Caron, a national nature reserve of peat bog which is one of the most impressive wildlife areas in Wales; home to rare marsh grasses, black adders, buzzards and even the occasional red kite. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and superb walking country, both on the rolling chalk hills overlooking fertile inland valleys and on the coastal footpaths offering spectacular clifftop views. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.

A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. This beautifully renovated and extended cottage enjoys an idyllic, rural location just a hundred yards or so from the crystal clear waters of the Lyne of Lorne, and has wonderful sea views. Located at the head of Airds Bay at the end of a private track approximately 1 mile long, Cliff Cottage stands detached and makes a wonderful retreat from which to explore this scenic area and to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.
An easy walk away is the pretty fishing village of Port Appin, which overlooks Loch Linnhe with its several islands and backdrop of mountains. From here ferries to the Isle of Lismore can be taken, where several places of interest can be visited. Apart from the fortified Tirefour Broch, there are the ruins of the 12th-century Castle Coeffin and the abandoned quarry village of Sailean with its disused kilns, as well as the ruins of Achanduin Castle and the island’s highest point Barr Mor. To the north of Port Appin, the romantic Castle Stalker can be found - much loved by photographers. Appin is a destination for food-lovers with several very highly rated restaurants in the immediate area.
Within easy reach, the Victorian resort of Oban is the second largest town in Argyll. It has the McCaig’s Folly as its landmark, which was built in imitation of Rome’s Colosseum. A tour of the Oban Distillery is a popular experience for whisky lovers whilst boat trips to Mull, Iona, Staffa, Seal Island and the Treshnish Isles can be made from the harbour at Oban. A short ferry ride from Oban takes visitors to the Isle of Kerrera - a small easily explored island from where panoramic views of Mull, the Slate Islands, Lismore and beyond can be admired.
In the opposite direction lies Fort William, with Ben Nevis - Britain’s highest summit - rising up in the background. One of the Highland’s most impressive glens, Glen Nevis, can be found just a further 10-minute drive away and apart from being the starting point for the ascent of Scotland’s highest peak, has been the location for several films, including Rob Roy and Braveheart.
The area is superb for walking, fishing and boat trips, which are all close by, whilst further afield are the fabulous mountains of Glencoe (with skiing in winter). Shop ⅓ mile. Pub ½ mile.

Sitting in a sheltered valley nestled between the majestic 12th-century Manorbier Castle on the one side, and the Norman church of St James on the other, lies Shute Cottage. It’s a truly remarkable holiday property, parts of which are almost as old as the buildings that surround it. It sits within its own 5 acres of landscaped grounds that run up the valley behind the cottage where a spring fed lake is a haven for wildlife. In the other direction and just a 3-minute walk from the cottage’s front door, lies one of Pembrokeshire’s most iconic beaches where the waves and rockpools are popular with surfers and families alike. The coastal cliff walks in all directions from the front door are fabulous where many secret beaches await. The coastal village of Manorbier has a great local pub with a beer garden, a very good café and an extremely well stocked village shop, be sure to visit Manorbier Castle, you can even climb a turret and see where you are staying.
Shute Cottage offers lots of character and charm with stone vaulted ceilings, Flemish round chimneys, Welsh slate and oak floors, the property sleeps six in three bedrooms within the cottage, whilst an outdoor sleep-out chalet provides two more beds if required. The master double bedroom has an adjoining bathroom and for the other two twin rooms (one on the ground floor) there is a separate bathroom with shower. The timber chalet in the garden also has its own bathroom with shower. On an evening enjoy relaxing in front the log burning stove in the sitting room with a good movie and glass of wine. The fully fitted open plan kitchen has everything you would expect. There is a washing machine and drying rack in the utility area and to the rear of the kitchen an enclosed courtyard accessed through a stable door if you need to allow little ones to play safely.
Only a ten minutes’ drive away is the coastal town of Tenby, here you can enjoy a ramble through the cobbled streets to see the numerous excellent dining options, shops, cafés and art galleries all waiting to be discovered. For keen golfers, Tenby Golf Club is located a short walk away and also boasts some truly stunning views from the dunes over Carmarthen Bay.
