The local area is steeped in history and tales, one such being the legend of highwayman Twm Siôn Cati, who hid out in caves near the village. The county of Carmarthenshire, known as ’The Garden of Wales’ has become a big draw for walkers, cyclists, anglers and lovers of the outdoors and is the largest county in southern Wales, stretching from Carmarthen Bay in the south to the western Brecon Beacons and Cambrian Mountains in the north. It offers rich landscapes, gardens, ancient castles, wildlife and sandy beaches as well as market towns brimming with local produce, chic shopping and eateries.
Llandeilo is one such town, less than 30 minutes drive away and the market town of Llandovery is just 10 minutes drive. Other places of interest nearby include National Trust Dolaucothi Goldmines (tours available) and the lakes of Llyn Brianne and Llyn-y-Fan Fach, the lake that gave rise to the Arthurian legend of the Lady of the Lake. This 18th century detached holiday cottage, at the end of a farm drive, is set in an elevated position with far reaching countryside views, between Llanelli and Carmarthen. Traditionally furnished, the cottage retains lots of character with exposed beams and tiled floors. As well as the living/dining area there is a parlour with ornate fireplace, piano and Welsh dresser, whilst the breakfast room has a decorative Rayburn, leading to a small but well equipped kitchen. There is a walking and cycling path within 0.5 miles and an abundance of activities nearby. Trefechan is a lovely, detached bungalow set a mile back from the local village of Pumpsaint. A great place to base yourself to explore the local countryside. It has a large, enclosed lawned garden for those bringing their dogs, there is also a field in which the dogs can run around. This property comprises of a large open plan living and dining room with views over the open countryside, a well-equipped kitchen and two bedrooms, one with a kingsize bed and the other with two single beds. It has a bathroom with a shower over the bath. In the garden there is a private hot tub which overlooks the countryside.
The property is 6 miles from the town of Lampeter which has an abundance of shops, coffee shops and restaurants. There are plenty of activities in the area such as horse riding, taking a walk in Cae Hir Gardens and a must see is a visit to the Welsh Quilt Centre. Less than a mile from the property is the Dolaucothi Gold Mines and a great day out is to be had here. The town of Llandeilo is 12 miles away, which hosts many festivals such as the jazz and gin festivals, the town is full of boutique shops and restaurants. The award-winning Nation Show Caves for Wales are 20 miles from the property, a fabulous place to keep children and adults alike entertained for the whole day. Take a trip to Llanstephan and enjoy afternoon tea in the mansion house or walk on the sandy beach and then visit the castle. Only 15 minutes away is Laugharne, home of Dylan Thomas, again with a beautiful sandy beach and castle with a tearoom. There is also Pembrey Country Park or Heatherton and Oakwood theme parks to visit or for younger guests (and parents!) visit Folly Farm with lambs, all things fluffy and even tigers and giraffes. A short drive away is Skanda Vale a multi faith ashram which welcomes 90,000 pilgrims a year for those who need a peaceful retreat to stay whilst visiting the temples. Pendegy Mill lies within a wooded valley on the edge of the rural village of Llanybri, nestled in the Carmarthenshire countryside. Sited a convenient distance from the historic coastal village of Llansteffan, it is just half a mile from the West Wales Coastal Path. These two beautiful cottages, situated next to the owners’ home, are the perfect base to explore all that Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire have to offer. Mill Cottage was a working water mill; the mill race running into the babbling stream flowing through the beautiful grounds out to the River Taff and into the Carmarthen Bay. These two Welsh stone barns, The Granary and Mill Cottage, have been lovingly restored and offer an idyllic holiday location. They have been finished to a very good standard throughout and have been thoughtfully furnished. On the ground floor is an open plan living space which is superb for social and family gatherings. Take in the coastal air outside in the shared lawns and garden - the perfect spot to dine al fresco and enjoy a delicious meal cooked on the BBQ.
Take a trip into nearby Llansteffan for freshly brewed coffee or travel back in time with a visit to Llansteffan Castle which is steeped in history, and boasts commanding views across the estuary of the River Towy and out towards the Gower Peninsula. Travelling west, a trip to Laugharne is a must. Here you can visit the house and writing shed of famous poet Dylan Thomas, or stop for a refreshing drink and meal at one of the local pubs he would often frequent. Further along this unique coastline is the village of Pendine, which boasts 7 miles of beautiful sandy beach where the land speed record was set in the famous car, Babs. The car was excavated from the Pendine Sands and can be seen today at the Museum of Speed in the town. Within a 40-minute drive you can visit Carmarthen, the National Botanical Gardens of Wales, the famous walled seaside town of Tenby, or enjoy a day out at Wales’ largest theme park, Oakwood. St David’s Cathedral is within reach while keen walkers should head for the Preseli Hills, 5 miles to the north west, and the acclaimed Pembrokeshire National Park coastal footpath.
