Look out for birds of prey such as red kites and buzzards soaring high above, and dolphins or seals in the waters. Drive along the Plynlimon Mountains, through the Tywi Forest or visit the impressive Abergwesyn Pass, and marvel at the solitude.

For a truly authentic Welsh family holiday experience, this is the area to be. The locals are justifiably proud of this region with its rich local folklore which tells of tricking the devil, mermaids, shipwrecked kings and princesses, and even an explanation of why gulls sound as if they’re crying. The little gems of Georgian Aberaeron, historic Cardigan, salty New Quay, traditional Tregaron and Lampeter are waiting to be explored. To the south, the coves of Mwnt, Cwmtydu, Penbryn, Tresaith – which resemble illustrations from books about pirates, are all within easy reach. No visit to the area would be complete without a ride on the steam railway. From the coast at Aberystwyth, watch the scenery change whilst travelling through ancient woodland and rugged mountain scenery, with the line clinging to the hillside to reach Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous Mynach Falls and Devil’s Punchbowl. The area itself has lots to offer, including fantastic walks along the Ceredigion coastline, famous for its horseshoe coves, Iron Age settlements and sandy beaches, where bottlenose dolphins and seals can be spotted on a clear day! The picturesque harbour towns of Newquay and Aberaeron offer unblemished beaches, restaurants, boutique shopping and art galleries that are waiting to be explored. Away from the coast, Ceredigion’s countryside is just as promising, with an array of charming market towns and historic castles dotted around the county. For an adventurous day out, take a short drive to the rugged Cambrian Mountains and explore the Cors Caron Nature Reserve, which flourishes with wildlife and the historic ruins of Strata Florida Abbey, which is one of Wales’ most important historical sites. In a rural setting, but less than 5 miles east of the seaside town of Aberystwyth, and with beautiful views of the Rheidol Valley, Maesbangor Farmhouse is a large property with lots of room to spread out. Previously two homes, but now combined into one, this spacious semi-detached house offers seven bedrooms sleeping up to 14 guests.

The imposing front of the house looks across the valley, and the front garden even boasts a hot tub where you can relax and take in the view. As you enter inside you will appreciate how ideal the farmhouse is for families or friends who want that extra space, or perhaps a quiet corner. There is a large beamed dining room with a feature wood burner. Leading off is a conservatory overlooking the enclosed terrace with benches and tables as well as a small lawn. The kitchen, complete with a breakfast area, is well-equipped with everything you need to cook up a tasty treat.

On the other side of the house there is a living room with 50" Freeview TV and wood burner, as well as an additional living room. Also on this side of the house you’ll find kitchen number two; smaller than the first but still well-equipped. There are two staircases that lead to the first floor, one leading to four bedrooms, all en-suite, and the other leading to three further bedrooms, one of which is en-suite, and a family bathroom. This is the perfect location for a family holiday, or a break with a group of friends.

Imagine yourself sitting on the the sandy beach overlooking Cardigan Bay, watching dolphins, or perhaps exploring one of the many market towns in the surrounding area. The Victorian resort of Aberystwyth, with its electric cliff railway, promenade and pier, is close by, as is the compelling Cambrian Mountains, dotted with hill sheep farms, forest and lakeland. Take a meandering train ride on what was once a working link between the local lead mines and the harbour; the Vale of Rheidol Railway now runs a steam train service through the Rheidol Valley to Devil’s Bridge, where you can see the famous Mynach Falls, Devil’s Punch Bowl and Jacob’s Ladder. When you’re done with exploring for the day, come back and relax at Maesbangor Farmhouse or visit the gastro pub, situated within half a mile of the house. Beach 6 miles. Come and discover Cwtch Wrth Plas, nestled adjacent to the owners’ home, in the grounds of a small Welsh manor. With many beautiful beaches, bays, villages and interesting market towns to visit, this a wonderful base from which to enjoy and explore the fabulous scenery of Ceredigion and the heritage coastline of Cardigan Bay.
The beautiful harbour village of New Quay is only 7 miles away, where you can enjoy not only the beach and boat trips, but also an array of shops and eateries, or you can just sample an ice cream. Why not have a seat on the harbour wall and watch out for the bottlenose dolphins which are regular visitors to this area; you can also take a boat trip out for a closer look at the dolphins and wide array of sea life.
This superb and quirky cottage offers open plan living, perfect for romantic breaks or a couples retreat, the well furnished living area is bright and airy and leads through to the cosy bedroom, the sumptuous double bedroom has been finished to a very good standard and boasts an en-suite shower room. Within a short drive you can explore the unspoilt beaches and coves such as Penbryn, Cei Bach and Cwmtydu, once a haven for smugglers, where in late summer, you may see Atlantic grey seals with their pups. The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is a 20-minute drive and offers an abundance of shops, restaurants and cafés, and a delightful level walk, suitable for bikes and pushchairs, to the National Trust property of Llanerchaeron, an 18th-century Welsh gentry estate. For those visitors who enjoy outdoor pursuits there is a canoeing centre and fishing available in Llandysul. Fly and coarse fishing, as well as golfing, are available in Lampeter. Also within reasonable driving distance are the interesting towns of Carmarthen, Cardigan and Aberystwyth. Beach 7 miles.

Aberystwyth is West Wales’ premier seaside resort and a historic town, offering varied shopping, bars and restaurants including both a one and two Michelin star restaurants.Art centre with theatre and cinema, pier and long promenade, castle ruins, the National Library of Wales (tours available) or take the Vale of Rheidol steam train to Devil’s Bridge and Waterfalls. A trip to Cardigan is a must, try the bustling local farmers market and visit the restored Cardigan Castle with over 900 years of history waiting to be explored. The Welsh Wildlife Centre is located in the nearby small village of Cilgerran and is one of the best wetland reserves in Wales. Perhaps take a short drive to Cenarth Falls, where if your lucky enough, you may see the salmon leaping up through the falls travelling upstream. The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is nearby and is worth a visit, as is the National Trust property of Llanerchaeron. Visit the coastal towns of Aberystwyth or Cardigan, both an easy drive away, or venture inland to the market towns of Lampeter, Tregaron or Newcastle Emlyn.

Penbryn beach, approximately 2 miles away, is a long sandy beach which is lovely for walking. The nearest beach to Morfa Ganol Farmhouse (less than one mile on foot) is the very secluded and pretty beach of Traeth Bach. Access to this beach is a very steep scramble down from the coast.

Come and discover Llain cottage, perfect for couples or a romantic getaway this truly beautiful cottage has been lovingly renovated to a very high standard throughout in 2021 and offers the perfect base to see this delightful area. Llain cottage is nestled within the grounds of owner’s home along a private track and surrounded by countryside and woodlands and around 5 minutes from the hamlet of Cross Inn where the village shop is and a similar distance to the coastal resort of New Quay. At the end of the lane discover the honey farm and enjoy a tour.
There are lovely sandy beaches just a few minutes’ drive away. The picture postcard town of New Quay sits above the glistening Cardigan Bay, and there is a variety of eateries and pubs, along with individual seaside shops. Take a stroll along the harbour and try to spot the resident pods of bottle nosed dolphins that can be seen almost daily.

There are many interesting and beautiful places to visit including the colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron, just 15 minutes away by car, and the university town of Aberystwyth, with its long promenade and pier, cliff railway, camera obscura and Vale of Rheidol steam railway to Devil’s Bridge. Walkers, cyclists, wildlife enthusiasts, or those who prefer more extreme sports are well catered for, and you can literally lose yourself in the wild undisturbed landscape of hills, mountains, and forests. There are 60 miles of coastal path, and even walking a small section of it is a fantastic way of seeing this beautiful part of west Wales.

Brynog Mansion Farmhouse, a vast wing of Brynog Mansion, has an important place in the history of the local area and today offers very spacious holiday accommodation for 12 people looking for a family holiday or group getaway.
A large house has existed at Brynog for centuries but the imposing frontage of long split sandstone blocks was added by the owners, the Vaughan’s, circa 1860s, in front of the earlier house which still survives. The long laurel lined driveway was built by Edward Vaughan to welcome his son John back from the Crimean War, but he tragically died at Sevastopol before he could see it. The driveway crosses the River Aeron by the fine stone Pont Brynog (Brynog Bridge) sometimes referred to as Pont Fawr in older maps. The current bridge was built in 1935 to replace the previous one which spectacularly collapsed into the river.
Evidence of the Vaughans still exist in the attic rooms of the Mansion House whose roof beams still bear the initials EV for Edward Vaughan. Sadly the orangery which used to exist in front of the entrance to the Farmhouse has long gone but it used to be accessed from the Mansion House by the blue glazed door which now forms the inner screen to the front entrance way of the Farmhouse.
The views are breathtaking looking out on the green vista of the Aeron Valley, which Dylan Thomas described as the most beautiful in Wales! Dylan and his wife Caitlin named their only daughter after this area, Aeronwy or Aeron for short. The Brynog farmland borders on the Llanllyr Estate, another large dwelling up river. Llanllyr was a medieval nunnery associated with the Cistercian Monastery, Strata Florida. The view of Cilbwn, the hill at the back of Brynog is spectacular and it is said that the farm track which forms a bridleway up to Cilbwn used to be a road frequented by monks to walk from Strata Florida down to the coast at Cardigan Bay to collect fish.
The present owner’s grandfather and his brothers bought part of the Brynog Estate in 1921 and the owners father milked the herd twice a day for over 50 years. Today the farm supports sheep in winter and cattle in summer. Much renovation and many changes have taken place over the years and various store rooms and servants quarters have been converted. The saddle rooms and gun rooms are now the large living room with inglenook fireplace which has been carefully re-exposed. Two beams keep the chimney stove in place but behind there is the original huge supporting tree trunk with bark still on it.

The Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is just under 7 miles away and here you will find the colourful houses and architecture that make it so distinctive. There are an array of individual shops and a wide choice of cafe’s, restaurants and pubs. Enjoy the famous honey ice cream or fish and chips whilst taking in the delightful sight of boats bobbing about in the harbour. The sweeping crescent of Cardigan Bay has over 60 miles of coastal pathway and stunning beaches, scenery and seaside towns and villages to explore, including Abersytwyth, New Quay, Llangrannog, and Cardigan. The university town of Lampeter is also just 7 miles away.

Hen Llaeth is set within the owner’s small holding complete with alpacas, chickens, donkeys and even a field to exercise your furry friends, all set down a private lane within the rolling Carmarthenshire countryside. The cottage is nestled just over the Ceredigion border outside the hamlet of Cwmsychpant, 10 minutes from the town of Llanybydder and 25 minutes from the coastal resort of New Quay with its truly stunning beaches and harbour. New Quay is ideal for days out and you can even enjoy fish and chips on the harbour walls whilst admiring the turquoise blue waters. Here you can take one of the many boat trips to spot the resident bottle nose dolphins. For keen walkers there is a host of scenic walks from your doorstep which are waiting to be discovered.
Hen Llaeth is one of three attached traditional stone built cottages, set within the owner’s grounds and was once a busy cow shed and part of the working farm. Enjoy relaxing on those balmy summer days with a glass of wine overlooking your south facing garden whilst cooking al fresco on your barbecue. Travel north along this stunning coastline to Aberaeron, famous for its multi-coloured Georgian houses and steeped in history. The market town of Aberystwyth is 28 miles away with its beautiful boardwalk, cinemas and the Aberystwyth Cliff Railway with some truly stunning views. The market town of Newcastle Emlyn is 12 miles away and is well worth a visit with its plethora of eateries, galleries and gift shops. It is set alongside the meandering River Teifi famous for its coracle boats fishing for salmon and brown trout. The village of Cenarth is 15 miles away where you can watch the salmon leaping through the falls if you time it right. Beach 13 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 5 miles.
