Award-winning beaches, perfect coves, iconic castles and pretty harbours make days out by car or on foot along the 60 miles of Heritage coastline a must. This region inspired Dylan Thomas to write some of his finest poetry. It is framed by the Cambrian Mountains, known as the backbone of Wales, and is so rich in wildlife, legends and fascinating landscapes. Look out for birds of prey such as red kites and buzzards soaring high above, and dolphins or seals in the waters. Drive along the Plynlimon Mountains, through the Tywi Forest or visit the impressive Abergwesyn Pass, and marvel at the solitude.

For a truly authentic Welsh family holiday experience, this is the area to be. The locals are justifiably proud of this region with its rich local folklore which tells of tricking the devil, mermaids, shipwrecked kings and princesses, and even an explanation of why gulls sound as if they’re crying. The little gems of Georgian Aberaeron, historic Cardigan, salty New Quay, traditional Tregaron and Lampeter are waiting to be explored. To the south, the coves of Mwnt, Cwmtydu, Penbryn, Tresaith – which resemble illustrations from books about pirates, are all within easy reach. To the north, around Aberystwyth and Borth, there are vast stretches of sand. Food plays a big part in the experience of Ceredigion, and a wide choice is to be found in the shops, restaurants and cafés offering regional products and ingredients such as the world beating Teifi Valley cheeses, the ubiquitous Welsh cakes, bara brith and of course, some spectacularly good seafood from the coast.

No visit to the area would be complete without a ride on the steam railway. From the coast at Aberystwyth, watch the scenery change whilst travelling through ancient woodland and rugged mountain scenery, with the line clinging to the hillside to reach Devil’s Bridge, home of the famous Mynach Falls and Devil’s Punchbowl. Situated just 5 minutes from Cardigan Bay, to include the coastal village of Aberporth and within easy reach to the whole of the beautiful Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire coastline and coastal walks, The Cottage is a detached, converted stone holiday cottage peacefully set on a farm with a selection of alpacas, donkeys, goats, ducks and chickens. The owners who live on the farm, which is set in 48 acres of rolling countryside, encourage the children to interact with the animals, and are also pleased to offer the use of a barbecue hut nicknamed the ‘Hobbit House’ by the family. Guests can hire it during their stay directly with the owners, subject to availability and for a small charge. There is bike storage in the barn if you would like to bring your own bikes.
Within a 15-minute drive visitors can discover quaint New Quay, famous for the bottlenose dolphins that can often be seen from the harbour (boat trips available in season). The colourful, Georgian, harbour town of Aberaeron is just a bit further up the coast road, with its chic shops and plenty of restaurants. Antique shoppers and browsers will enjoy the nearby market town of Newcastle Emlyn, and Cenarth with its waterfalls is also close by and offers indoor swimming, coracle rides, fishing and paintballing. There are numerous attractions in the area, particularly suitable for children.
Nearby is the Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, which is set on a headland overlooking the nature reserve of Cardigan Island, home to thousands of sea birds. At the foot of the cliffs, a colony of Atlantic grey seals can be observed in their natural habitat. Spectacular coastline and wonderful views can be savoured from the National Trust managed Penbryn Bay and a visit to National Trust Cilgerran Castle can also be enjoyed. Only the ruins remain of this striking 13th-century castle, whose vantage point overlooks the wonderful Teifi Gorge. Also nearby is the town of Cardigan with its restored medieval castle. The Teifi Valley Railway is another experience for the visitor, a 2-mile journey offers wonderful views of the valley and countryside. Golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Beach 3½ miles. This characterful traditional Welsh barn offers vaulted ceilings to create lots of space and teaming with natural light to offer the perfect couples retreat. The market town of Lampeter is well worth a visit and is around 6 miles away and offers a range of shops and cafés or travelling north you can uncover the rugged and sublime Cardigan Bay Coastline with the picturesque harbour town of New Quay with its amazing beaches where you can swim, sunbath or just enjoy a stroll followed by fish and chips on the harbour walls, here you can also take one of the many boat trips out in search for Dolphins and lots of sea life.
Pandy Cottage is set peacefully within the large grounds of the owners home, set all on one level and offers a studio style accommodation with open plan living and bedroom with separate kitchen and dining area to cook that special meal, or enjoy dining al fresco in the lawned garden with hot tub (available April 2022), where you can take in the balmy summer day or relax and enjoy the stars, with no street lights this is a perfect dark sky destination. The kingsize bed is sure to leave you relaxed and rejuvenated. A visit to the colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron and Aberystwyth, with its pier, promenade and the steam. Visit the nearby National Trust site of Llanerchaeron an 18th-century estate and John Nash designed mansion house with cafe, woodland walks. Take an underground tour of the Dolaucothi Gold Mines, and John Nash designed mansion house train taking you to Devil’s Bridge and waterfalls. There are 60 miles of coastal path and plenty of lovely beaches and coves to explore. Alternatively, take the steam train to Devil’s Bridge and Waterfalls. Whatever you do or wherever you go, Ceredigion offers a warm welcome and a host of attractions and history. Befitting of a county that dates back over 1600, every town has a tale to tell and each village has a mystery to discover. Beach 10 miles.

In a rural setting, but less than 5 miles east of the seaside town of Aberystwyth, and with beautiful views of the Rheidol Valley, Maesbangor Farmhouse is a large property with lots of room to spread out. Previously two homes, but now combined into one, this spacious semi-detached house offers seven bedrooms sleeping up to 14 guests.

The imposing front of the house looks across the valley, and the front garden even boasts a hot tub where you can relax and take in the view. As you enter inside you will appreciate how ideal the farmhouse is for families or friends who want that extra space, or perhaps a quiet corner. There is a large beamed dining room with a feature wood burner. Leading off is a conservatory overlooking the enclosed terrace with benches and tables as well as a small lawn. The kitchen, complete with a breakfast area, is well-equipped with everything you need to cook up a tasty treat.

On the other side of the house there is a living room with 50" Freeview TV and wood burner, as well as an additional living room. Also on this side of the house you’ll find kitchen number two; smaller than the first but still well-equipped. There are two staircases that lead to the first floor, one leading to four bedrooms, all en-suite, and the other leading to three further bedrooms, one of which is en-suite, and a family bathroom. This is the perfect location for a family holiday, or a break with a group of friends.

Imagine yourself sitting on the the sandy beach overlooking Cardigan Bay, watching dolphins, or perhaps exploring one of the many market towns in the surrounding area. The Victorian resort of Aberystwyth, with its electric cliff railway, promenade and pier, is close by, as is the compelling Cambrian Mountains, dotted with hill sheep farms, forest and lakeland. Take a meandering train ride on what was once a working link between the local lead mines and the harbour; the Vale of Rheidol Railway now runs a steam train service through the Rheidol Valley to Devil’s Bridge, where you can see the famous Mynach Falls, Devil’s Punch Bowl and Jacob’s Ladder. When you’re done with exploring for the day, come back and relax at Maesbangor Farmhouse or visit the gastro pub, situated within half a mile of the house. Beach 6 miles. Come and discover Llain cottage, perfect for couples or a romantic getaway this truly beautiful cottage has been lovingly renovated to a very high standard throughout in 2021 and offers the perfect base to see this delightful area. Llain cottage is nestled within the grounds of owner’s home along a private track and surrounded by countryside and woodlands and around 5 minutes from the hamlet of Cross Inn where the village shop is and a similar distance to the coastal resort of New Quay. At the end of the lane discover the honey farm and enjoy a tour.
There are lovely sandy beaches just a few minutes’ drive away. The picture postcard town of New Quay sits above the glistening Cardigan Bay, and there is a variety of eateries and pubs, along with individual seaside shops. Take a stroll along the harbour and try to spot the resident pods of bottle nosed dolphins that can be seen almost daily.

There are many interesting and beautiful places to visit including the colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron, just 15 minutes away by car, and the university town of Aberystwyth, with its long promenade and pier, cliff railway, camera obscura and Vale of Rheidol steam railway to Devil’s Bridge. Walkers, cyclists, wildlife enthusiasts, or those who prefer more extreme sports are well catered for, and you can literally lose yourself in the wild undisturbed landscape of hills, mountains, and forests. There are 60 miles of coastal path, and even walking a small section of it is a fantastic way of seeing this beautiful part of west Wales.

Penbryn beach, approximately 2 miles away, is a long sandy beach which is lovely for walking. The nearest beach to Morfa Ganol Farmhouse (less than one mile on foot) is the very secluded and pretty beach of Traeth Bach. Access to this beach is a very steep scramble down from the coast.

Sit back and relax in the beautiful grounds, with 7 acres of meadows to enjoy a stroll, whilst taking in these magnificent sea views.
The former barns and lodge have been sympathetically restored to retain all of their original charm and character. Welcoming touches have been added, including blazing wood burners for those cosy nights in and open plan living spaces for socialising; each property has been furnished to a very good standard and offers the perfect night’s sleep for guests.
A trip to Cardigan is a must, try the bustling local farmers market and visit the restored Cardigan Castle with over 900 years of history waiting to be explored. The Welsh Wildlife Centre is located in the nearby small village of Cilgerran and is one of the best wetland reserves in Wales. Perhaps take a short drive to Cenarth Falls, where if your lucky enough, you may see the salmon leaping up through the falls travelling upstream. The colourful Georgian harbour town of Aberaeron is nearby and is worth a visit, as is the National Trust property of Llanerchaeron. Visit the coastal towns of Aberystwyth or Cardigan, both an easy drive away, or venture inland to the market towns of Lampeter, Tregaron or Newcastle Emlyn.
