Tregrehan Mills, EnglandThis beautifully presented, detached bungalow sits in the owner’s well-established garden and has two of Cornwall’s loveliest gardens within a short walk. This area of Cornwall is inundated with many tourist attractions, pretty coastal villages and resorts; from Fowey to Mevagissey the whole of St Austell Bay is dotted with secret coves and secluded beaches, such as Menabilly made famous by Daphne du Maurier. Close to the old fishing villages of Kingsand and Cawsand on the Rame peninsula, and the unspoilt beaches of Whitsand Bay. Kingsand and Cawsand go hand in hand and are located in the south east corner of Cornwall. Each are pretty coastal villages and both have lovely sandy beaches. Whitsand Bay also has a sandy beach and this one is over three miles long, ideal for a romantic stroll listening to the waves.
This area of Devon and Cornwall is ideal for water sports such as paddleboarding and kayaking and keen golfers can practice their swing at Portwrinkle golf course.
The Torpoint ferry is 15 minutes’ drive, where you can sail cross the River Tamar into the city of Plymouth and visit ’Drake’s Hoe’ or the Barbican where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America. Two sandy beaches can be found within a 30-minute walk and the highlights of West Cornwall are all within a short drive, including St Ives, Sennen, Mousehole, Newlyn, Penzance, St Michael’s Mount and the Minack Theatre. The village has the Levant and Geevor tin mines, Pendeen lighthouse, a fish and chip shop, pubs and a store selling fresh bread, eggs, fruit and veg, and logs within walking distance.
St Just with its independent shops, galleries and cafés is 10 minutes away. There is a bus stop at the end of the lane with a regular service linking St Ives, Penzance and St Just. The 7 mile coastal road between the cottage and St Ives is one of the most scenic in the UK, excellent for cycling or driving and passes the traditional village of Zennor with its famous ice cream parlour and world class climbing at Bosigran. An ideal base from which to tour, The Shooting Lodge is convenient for the North and South Heritage Coasts of Cornwall, where to the north, the picturesque fishing villages of Port Isaac and Boscastle, and the old port of Padstow are within easy reach. To the south is the harbour town of Fowey, and the charming villages of Looe and Polperro, each with narrow, winding streets full of fisherman’s cottages and intriguing tales concerning their smuggling past. Partly isolated from the rest of the country, until the railway crossed the River Tamar in the 1860s, this region has retained a wealth of antiquities. Treveighan, EnglandWith views over the glorious countryside these pet-friendly holiday cottages are situated just 4 miles from Cornwall’s spectacular north coast. Crantock, EnglandThis 15th-century manor house, with its own pretty garden, has tremendous character, a friendly atmosphere and is extremely well furnished. The spacious beamed sitting room is set on the first floor to take full advantage of the wonderful coastal views. Attached to Manor Cottage (GAX) but completely self-contained, it enjoys a picturesque setting on the green, in the peaceful Cornish hamlet of West Pentire – only 300 yards down a cliff path from acres of clean golden sand (see Manor Cottage GAX). Children and adults alike can sample the delights of rock pool fishing, exploring caves or surfing. By hiring a pony, it is possible to ride cross-country to the beaches of Porth Joke and Holywell, without the need to cross any roads.
Set in the heart of National Trust land, the property is surrounded by magnificent walking country, and is an ideal base from which to explore Cornwall’s splendid countryside and unique history as well as its magnificent coastline. The immediate area is renowned for its superb sandy surfing beaches, punctuated by craggy headlands. Perranporth (named after the patron saint of tin miners) is 10 miles to the south, famous for its drifting sands which have twice buried the church. Lifeguards patrol the wide sandy beach in summer, and surf boards and wet suits can be hired by the day. Further along is St Agnes with its superb coastal views, while to the south lies Truro, the unofficial capital of Cornwall, offering good shops and restaurants, a splendid cathedral and The Royal Cornwall Museum with extensive displays of the county.
The historic and family friendly Bowgie Inn is adjacent and offers a wide selection of food as well as local beers and ciders, and sports fans can enjoy Sky coverage. A general store (open in season) can be found nearby, and Crantock village and its shops are only 1 mile away. Liskeard, EnglandSet in the gently undulating foothills of Bodmin Moor, Rosecraddoc Manor boasts a history that dates back to the Domesday Book. Rebuilt in the 1820s it is Grade II listed, together with the two bridges in the grounds – one of which forms part of the entrance drive. The manor house and coach house have been converted into apartments, all furnished and equipped to a very high standard, with many luxurious touches that will appeal to the most discerning of visitors. Access to the front door of the Manor is by three stone steps. Some of the accommodation features four poster beds, some offer spa baths and some offer saunas.
Heron is a first floor studio-style apartment, whilst Riverview and Riverbank enjoy a secluded position on the banks of the small cascading river, with pretty aspects across the river and parkland towards the lake – these two cottages include special features to make them suitable for wheelchair users.
Lakeview stands about 75 yards from the manor, in an enviable position overlooking the fishing lake, and enjoys particularly beautiful views from its first floor living room and large balcony.
Rosecraddoc Manor is surrounded by 35 acres of natural gardens and bluebell woods that beckon to you to stroll along its footpaths. The lake is well stocked for coarse fishing, with carp, roach and bream, and the all weather tennis court can be enjoyed April – October. There are several pubs locally.
