Hayle, EnglandThe Light House is in the pretty little village of Gwithian. The Light House is a spacious, dog-friendly, four-bedroom cottage, with an open plan, feel on the ground floor where the conservatory links through to the living room and kitchen. The garden is mainly laid to lawn with a patio to the rear of the house, a great spot to enjoy some al fresco dining or a barbecue. There is a ground floor double bedroom that would ideally suit one person but could accommodate a couple. On the first floor the master bedroom has a kingsize bed and views towards the sea, and another bedroom has a bunk bed. Up on the second floor accessed by steep stairs is a twin bedroom. Please note that the ground floor double bedroom and the shower room can be separated from the rest of the ground floor with the pull down roller blind.
Blasted by the breeze off the Atlantic, the magnificent beach at Gwithian Towans is always a colourful scene of windsurfers on the water, blow karts on the beach and kites in the sky. Backed by sand dunes, tufted with wild grass, at low tide, there is a vast amount of sand to enjoy, and large areas of rock pools are uncovered, which are great for kids to explore. The beach is dog friendly for most of the year with restrictions only applying between 10am and 6pm in July and August. Gwithian Towans is lifeguard patrolled (during high season). There is some great countryside to explore near here, but a highlight is the stunning coastal road between St Ives and St Just where the moorland meets the sea - wild and dramatic! If you take the train to St Ives, the line hugs the coast, and the views are quite beautiful, and the restaurants are superb. Both the north and south coasts are easily accessible, making it an ideal location for those looking to take advantage of the great surfing spots available in this part of Cornwall. St Ives, once a busy fishing village, now relies on tourism as its main industry. Turner came and painted a landscape in 1811 and art has played a part in St Ives history ever since. Lemon Quay plays host to many events throughout the year including the Cornwall Food and Drink Festival in the Autumn and the famous Truro Fatstock Show just before Christmas. Regular farmers markets occur every Wednesdays and Saturday, and there are also arts and craft markets also on a Saturday. Bodmin, EnglandThis is a quite beautiful and peaceful spot. Located next door to the Owner’s property, this detached conversion has its own private enclosed, walled patio garden and is a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy the rural atmosphere. The comfortable and stylish interior is set out over split levels with the large bedroom and bathroom on the upper ground level. There are four steps to the spacious open plan living space with its superb large French doors opening onto the lovely patio garden with its established shrubs, climbing roses and water feature. Less than 2 miles from Bodmin. This area is a great place to explore by bicycle and you can either bring your own or hire them locally and roam along the nearby Camel Trail. Barn Cottage is an ideal base for touring the whole of Cornwall with a host of nearby sandy beaches such as Polzeath, Harlyn and Trevone. Classic Cornish villages such as Fowey, Mevagissey, Port Isaac and Boscastle are all within easy reach, as is the bustling fishing town of Looe. The famous Eden Project is well worth a visit as is the stately home at Lanhydrock, both just a few minutes away. The beautiful River Fowey is accessible for walks at various points nearby including Golitha Falls and Respryn, with their ancient beech woodlands, and in the former Cornish capital of Lostwithiel. The oldest part of Bodmin is made up of mainly granite buildings clustered around the Bodmin Beacon. The Beacon is a 144 feet tall obelisk in memory of Sir Walter Raleigh Gilbert. The area around the Beacon which has woodland and traditional hay meadow was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1994. The 18-mile Camel Trail follows the route of the old railway along traffic free paths, providing a flat cycle through Bodmin and Wadebridge out to Padstow, eminently suitable for families. Bodmin, EnglandA short drive from Bodmin moor. Crackington Haven, EnglandMadison is a lovely Swedish designed, detached holiday property situated not far from the beach and benefiting from being just under 8 miles from the popular seaside town of Bude. The property can comfortably accommodate eight guests with all rooms on one level.
There are three bedrooms; one with a super kingsize bed, Smart TV and a lovely en-suite with a multi spray unit, double walk-in shower plus a bath and the other two both being twins (one with a handy sink in it). There’s also a family shower room, again with double walk-in shower. Saint Austell, EnglandThese two single-storey barns (refs 29635 and 29636) have been converted from an old grain mill and stores. Cosy and warm in the winter and cool and airy in the summer the grain stores provide a well equipped home from home. Alongside a variety of board games and books, there’s a large collection of DVDs to enjoy on the 50" TVs. There’s a sunny south-facing garden, with a hideaway den with day bed, in which to enjoy an afternoon snooze. With no light pollution, there’s ample opportunity for star-gazing the dark skies.
Little Polgrain Barns are in the heart of the Roseland Peninsula, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a walker’s paradise, with flower-filled lanes giving way to stunning coastal scenery. A stroll along the lane beings you to the hamlet of Portholland, a pretty cove with a history of smuggling. The pubs at St Ewe and Tregony are local family and dog friendly pubs, within a few miles radius. Unspoilt sandy beaches, ancient fishing harbours, tiny art galleries, great seaside cafes and pubs makes this a place with something for everyone. The cafe in nearby Portscatho offers feast nights throughout the summer. Kayaking, horse riding, cycling and sailing are all close at hand.
This area of Cornwall is renowned for its sub-tropical gardens. Caerhays Castle has featured on numerous TV and feature film dramas and is surrounded by acres of magnificent camellias and magnolias. Many of the plants were originally shipped from China in the 19th century. The Lost Gardens of Heligan is a short drive away, there visitors can spend all day wandering through the walled gardens, jungle valley and enjoy watching the heritage breeds at the South West’s first Rare Breed Farm Park. The Eden Project is also nearby, it’s famous biomes nestle in a reclaimed china clay pit. This amazing complex has a huge indoor rainforest, full of exotic planting, waterfalls and treetop walkways. It’s an ecological hub, with themed seasonal events and provides a spectacular setting for their regular music festival, the Eden Sessions. Charlestown, a regular location for ’Poldark’, is a few miles away in St Austell. It has a shipwreck centre and offers trips on its famous tall ships.
Further afield but easily reached by car or train, the North Coast offers great days out for surfing and visiting the popular destinations of Padstow, Watergate Bay and St Ives. Beach ¾ mile.
