The area has a great deal to offer with Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Sites of Special Scientific Interest on your doorstep, along with Hartland Quay, Hartland Abbey and the lighthouse at Hartland Point. English Heritage Coastline can be accessed from a maze of footpaths within a mile of your doorstep. The nearby beaches and coves are a treat to explore and keen surfers and beach lovers have an abundant choice of far-reaching sandy beaches in the area, with Bude and Westward Ho! within easy driving distance. There is even the added benefit of an outdoor washing point at the properties, perfect for sandy dogs, and the choice of two fields to safely exercise your dog off lead. Fishing, watersports and sailing at nearby Tamar Lakes. Golf, riding and cycling on the Tarka Trail all close by. Strawberry Lodge (ref 29841) stands detached at the far end of the grounds of Barrowswood, enjoying woodland surroundings with magnificent views over the field and across to Cheddar Gorge. Cheddar village offers plenty of interesting shops and cafes as well as other attractions. Cheddar Gorge, Britain’s largest limestone ravine gouged through the Mendips, is a magnet for climbers, walkers and visitors to the floodlit caves and Cheddar Reservoir is a great place to take a picnic, look out for wildlife and join in activities such as sailing and angling. Axbridge is a charming market town with a medieval square and half-timbered buildings, whilst Wookey Hole attracts many visitors to the showcaves. Wells is England’s smallest city set around a cathedral; Wedmore is a lively town with many individual shops and eateries, Glastonbury is famous for its music festival, spiritual culture and King Arthur legends, and the coastal resorts and magnificent beaches at Weston-super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea, Berrow and Brean are all within a short drive, as are the cities of Bath and Bristol. The properties are opposite the popular village pub, The Compasses Inn, which is over 400 years old and provides a popular, historic meeting place/restaurant which serves fine food with a dining conservatory and a lovely garden. Damerham is an ancient village steeped in history, its Norman church occupies a splendid hilltop site and is surrounded by fields. Damerham and Rockbourne fisheries are renowned for their chalk streams, ideal for trout fishing, and shooting, walking, cycling and horse riding are popular here too. The Heavy Horse Farm Park and Ancient Technology Centre at Cranborne are worthy of a visit. The cathedral city of Salisbury with leisure facilities, Cranborne Chase, The New Forest, Wilton House, Kingston Lacy (NT) and Southampton are all easily accessible. The nearby village of Upottery is 1 mile away and there are plenty of local walks into the Blackdown Hills in the surrounding area. During your stay there is much to see and do. The historic town of Honiton has a good range of amenities including a good number of antique shops. There is good access to the coast where you can sample the delights of Beer, Branscombe and Seaton. For those willing to travel further, there is access onto Dartmoor National Park, and Exeter has a lot to offer visitors. There are numerous National Trust properties in the area including Killerton, Castle Drogo and Knightshayes. Of course, you must make time for a visit to the Thursford Collection, especially at Christmas for The Thursford Christmas Spectacular and Santa’s Magical Journey. Those visiting at Christmas time should visit Holt too, famous locally for it’s pretty festive lights.
