  • The Old Sunday School, DerbyshireInstant Book Overlay Image
Dating back to 1871, The Old Sunday School can be found on the lower level of the Grade II listed Fernilee Methodist Chapel and offers the opportunity for a truly unique stay within the Peak District National Park. The incredibly exciting project which has seen the conversion of the old Sunday School into fabulous self-catering guest accommodation has involved the local and wider community, as well as attracting support from all over the world and quite wonderfully unearthed a time capsule from 150 years ago. By doing this the long-standing heritage of Fernilee village has been safeguarded for future generations and has meant that the chapel can remain operational for Sunday afternoon services and occasional events to serve the local residents. Completely self-contained, the holiday accommodation is accessed independently from the chapel, which is set into the hillside overlooking the Goyt Valley.

Walks are available through beautiful countryside straight from the door including round both Fernilee and Errwood Reservoirs. On your return there’s a good food serving pub a mere 5-minute walk from the property, and which also welcomes any four-legged friends. The town of Whaley Bridge is a 5-minute drive and home to ample amenities, or in the other direction the spa town of Buxton is just a 10-minute drive. Here you’ll find the famous Buxton Opera House, Pavilion Gardens and brand new in 2020 the Buxton Crescent Spa. Other towns and villages within a 30-minute drive include Castleton, Edale, Eyam and Bakewell meaning you really are spoilt for choice.

    Ashbourne, England
Located in Shirley a small attractive village, comfortably grouped around a lovely church just off the A52 Ashbourne to Derby road. Brynfields Cottage is a perfect retreat when you just need to spend some time in nature. You’ll be in a perfect location to explore Derbyshires Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty but taking the car to Ashbourne for some cultural sightseeing won’t take you too long either.
After you’re done with all that fresh air, this home-from-home will welcome you into its cosy and relaxed embrace, consisting of a beautiful balance between the old and the new. With a large garden, dining outdoors will become a comfortable routine in the summer, but you might be able to get a few nice days in the colder months as well. This cottage is great at bringing everyone together in the dining area or by the wood burner. At night, retreat to the quiet bedrooms for some well-deserved rest and prepare for a new day of exploring the naturally beautiful surroundings.
Nearby Ashbourne is the perfect example of an English market town, boasting an eccentric street plan, narrow, cobbled alleys, old market stalls and many fine coaching inns. In its heyday, during the 18th century, the town was a fashionable, social centre, and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period. Today the town still has much to offer with a good selection of restaurants, whilst being regarded as something of a haven for antique hunters, but don’t expect a bargain! For those who prefer outdoor pursuits, the Dove and Manifold Valleys are close by offering good walking and cycling, whilst Alton Towers is just 25 minutes away!
