The village is situated in the north of the Lake District National Park, and is also just a short drive to Carlisle and the Scottish borders - it couldn’t be easier to explore the area. Bassenthwaite is a real community village which hosts an annual duck race, frequent pub quizzes and a vibrant, active local church arranging village fates, sports days and even Morris dancing. This beautiful cottage is just over a mile away from Bassenthwaite Lake, where fishing and sailing are available, or for nature lovers a walk up to the osprey viewpoints is well worth the effort. The property is ideally located for cyclists, with rides including the C2C and Cumbria Way routes, along with off-road trails at nearby Whinlatter Forest. Just a 5-minute drive down the road and you are in Newby Bridge, popular for its fantastic riverside pubs and home to the Lakes Aquarium and Windermere Lake Cruises. Take a wonderful cruse across the largest lake in the UK over to the popular town of Ambleside. If walking is more of what you are looking for then you are spoilt for choice, with 214 Wainwright fells within easy reach you have plenty of options to choose from. There are also an abundance of cycling routes close by or if you want to go further afield, there are many other popular Lake District towns to explore such as Grasmere and Ulverston. Why not head over to Grange-over-Sands or Cartmel, famous for its sticky toffee pudding, Michelin star restaurant and horse racing. West Fells Cottage is situated in the village of Rowrah which is located on the fringe of the Lake District National Park between Cockermouth and Ennerdale. In less than 2 miles you’ll reach the National Park where you have an abundance of walks, cycle routes, wildlife, mountains and lakes. It offers easy access to explore the Western Lake District and coast, and has a couple of pubs and restaurants nearby. Your nearest lake is Ennerdale Water which is less than 4 miles away. Ennerdale is widely regarded as one of the most unspoilt areas of the Lake District National Park, and thanks to this it is teaming with wildlife including indigenous red squirrels, ospreys and buzzards. If that’s not enough, Loweswater is less than 6 miles away which leads to Crummock Water and then Buttermere. The scenery around this unspoilt part of the Lakes is stunning, and the beauty, colours and unforgettable panoramic views are a sight to behold. You’re less than 10 miles from St Bees Head Heritage Coast, offering excellent coastal walks and golden sandy beaches. Of course if you’re looking for a traditional Cumbrian market town, you’ll love Cockermouth, 9 miles, with an abundance of speciality shops, coffee houses, restaurants and attractions. Visit Wordsworth House for a spot of culture, or maybe Jennings Brewery beneath the castle walls, offering tasting tours. Kirkgate Arts provides a cinema and theatre performances. Orrest Head House was built in 1672 and was one of the first houses in Birthwaite, (as Windermere was known before it was renamed when the railway arrived in the 1850’s).
