Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.

It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. The beautiful market town of Bakewell (3½ miles) is situated on the River Wye, crossed by a 13th-century five-arched bridge which has coffee shops and restaurants. Within easy reach are Matlock, Hall Leys Park, Chesterfield, Alfreton and Buxton. National Trust properties and gardens nearby include Riley Graves, Longshaw, Mam Tor, South Peak, Dovedale, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall. Close by are both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. Featured as one of the doctor’s houses in the TV series ’Peak Practice’, this makes an excellent base for visiting all the Peak District has to offer, with Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall close at hand, as well as Crich Tram Village and Hardwick Hall. The renowned show caves at Castleton are an easy drive, whilst Carsington Water for fly fishing and watersports is within 15 miles. Chesterfield with its crooked church spire is just 6 miles. The former farm building was once owned by the Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, to whom Queen Victoria was very close to, and sits adjacent to the owner’s home, Manor Farm, a medieval Grade II listed manor house which dates back to 1553. The Old Stables is one of six dotted around this stunning courtyard setting and has been converted to a good standard throughout. The property offers exposed beams and is full of character, really giving this holiday home a unique feel. Stable doors welcome you into the open plan kitchen and living area, and upstairs there are two bedrooms and a super bathroom complete with a spa bath.

It is an ideal position from which to enjoy many of the wonderful attractions Derbyshire has to offer including Bakewell, which can be reached in around 5 minutes, with its independent shops, tea shops, weekly farmers’ market, and of course the Bakewell pudding shop! Nearby is the exceptional Chatsworth House and Gardens, along with medieval manor house Haddon Hall.

This delightful, stone, mid-terraced 17th century holiday cottage is warm, cosy and beautifully presented with great finishing touches. It sits in a prime location within the Peak District National Park in the centre of Tideswell, a large village which makes an excellent base being home to traditional pubs, coffee shops, delicatessens and a local supermarket. For outdoor enthusiasts there are excellent walks direct from the door through Tideswell Dale, leading out onto the Monsal Trail, which has old railway tunnels, and being traffic free is also perfect for easy cycling and horse riding. Many surrounding pretty Peak District villages and towns such as the historic plague village of Eyam, Bakewell famous for its pudding, and the spa town of Buxton can all be reached in around a 15 minute drive, as can the magnificent historic houses of Chatsworth Estate and medieval Haddon Hall. There is climbing available at the ever popular Stanage Edge, which is around 30 minutes away, and watersports at the beautiful Carsington Water, which can be reached in around 45 minutes. Places of interest further afield include Crich Tramway Village, Manifold Valley, Castleton, Dovedale and Buxton. Activities available locally include cycling and fishing. This heart-warming retreat is perfect for couples and families alike seeking a rural location with direct access to canal towpath and wharf. Halfway between the bustling cities of Nottingham and Derby, also an easy drive away from the wonderful Peak District National Park. The cottage, built for salt mill workers is 18th century, and its name originates from Wilne Lane which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book.
Shardlow is an unexpected delight for any unsuspecting visitor, whether emerging from the Derby conurbation in the north and finding quiet, spacious, sweeping greenery, or from the south where a signpost tells you you’re now in Derbyshire, although without the hills and dales you might have been expecting. As you spy the boats, locks, and warehouses, you might even wonder if you’ve been transported to a corner of the Netherlands, an impression that would have been even more likely if Shardlow had hung on to its windmill and more importantly in its hayday it was referred to as ‘Rural Rotterdam’ and ‘Little Liverpool’. Today Shardlow is Britain’s most complete surviving example of a canal village, much of it snuggled safely in a conservation area.

In 1880 Florence Nightingale considered purchasing the property to convert into a coffee house and reading rooms, to offer an alternative to alcohol for the working man, as all-night drinking sessions were not uncommon at that time.

You can enjoy countryside, forest and canalside walks right from the doorstep of these perfect retreats, while the more serious outdoor enthusiasts can head to the magnificent Peak District National Park to experience some of the finest scenery that England has to offer. Head into nearby Matlock where you will be able to sample some of the wonderful food in the many eateries on offer, and the lovely, quirky shops to pick up a souvenir. Learn of the local history at the Peak District Mining Museum and explore the interactive exhibits and uncover the life of a Derbyshire lead miner. A family friendly adventure can be found at Matlock Farm Park, which is home to a host of lovely animals and a fantastic play area to keep the little ones entertained, as well as a riding school too. A real must is a visit back in time to Crich Tramway Village, where you can take a trip through history at The National Tramway Museum, or explore the magnificent Chatsworth House in Bakewell, a filming location for the feature film ’Pride and Prejudice’, as the handsome Mr Darcy’s Pemberley Manor, set within vast grounds and filled with a magnificent collection, including artefacts from Ancient Egypt, some of Europe’s best art collections and modern sculpture.
