Away from the farm there are many interesting places to explore. For your local shopping, Harbertonford, 1 mile, has a small village shop and post office. Also, the village of Moreleigh, 1 mile, has a highly rated pub serving good traditional food. The ancient town of Totnes, just 3 miles away, has a range of quirky independent shops and bistros and is a vibrant and interesting place to visit, especially on Fridays when the market comes to town.
The South Devon coastline is close at hand, has many beautiful beaches and coves, scenic walks and pretty villages including Blackpool Sands and Slapton. Enjoy a day out in the beautiful riverside marine town of Dartmouth and take a cruise along the river to Totnes or the ferry across to Kingswear, and the quaint fishing town of Brixham, then ride on the steam train to Paignton or Buckfastleigh. Within easy reach are the English Riviera resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, the boating and sailing centre of Salcombe on the estuary and the historic town of Dartmouth, nestling on the banks of the River Dart. - Okehampton, EnglandGrattan Cottage (ref UK11036) and Manor Cottage (ref UK11037) are set within the extensive grounds of the historic and Grade II listed Grattan Manor, just outside the village of Bow. A freshwater spring within the grounds is the apparent exact centre of Devon. Both cottages are furnished and equipped to a very good standard and each has its own unique character and charm. Wood burners, well-equipped kitchens and private patio areas all contribute to the appeal of the cottages. Both Grattan Cottage, which is detached, and Manor Cottage, a wing of a property, overlook the old orchard, a large lawned area with some of the remaining fruit trees. It’s ideal for sitting out on a warm summer’s day or taking the dog for an early morning stretch. Within the orchard, each cottage has a private sitting-out area; Grattan Cottage has a raised gazebo and the use of a barbecue hut in the orchard. Croquet is occasionally available by prior arrangement with the Lord of the Manor, i.e. the owner. All-weather tennis court (please bring your own equipment). Outdoor, open, shared swimming pool - available in the summer months and later if weather allows - in the attractive walled garden.
The village of Bow is a short distance away and has a pub and well-stocked local convenience store. Due to the central location, the cottages make an ideal base from which to explore the north and south of Devon, as well as the beautiful surrounding Devon countryside. The regional towns of Credit and Okehampton (considered the gateway to the Dartmoor National Park) are easily reached, and the towns provide a good range of shops and amenities.
On Dartmoor there are plenty of walks for all ages and abilities to enjoy this stunning and dramatic area, as well as some pretty villages with pubs and tea rooms. There are many fine beaches and coves along north or south Devon, steam trains here and there, and a trip to Lundy Island can be arranged from Bideford pier. Ask the owner for information on river boat excursions along the Dart, especially from Totnes on Dartmoor. Numerous places of interest close include the R.H.S. gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal (glass blowing etc.) and the unique, historic fishing village of Clovelly is not far from Port Isaac (remember ’Doc Martin?’). Visit the last castle to be built in England at Castle Drogo (National Trust), with a nearby excellent riverside pub. There is golf at Okehampton and nearby Crediton, or you can hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington. Or simply relax amongst the beautiful grounfs surrounding the Manor. There are shops, cafés, restaurants and a great boutique cinema in a local hotel too, all just 2½ miles away Woolacombe really does have something for everyone. Exmoor National Park with its magical night skies in Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve is just 10 miles away and Lynton and Lynmouth 19 miles to the east with its incredible sea views, rugged cliffs and amazing funicular cliff railway. This opened in 1890 being the highest and steepest totally water powered railway in the world. There are several world-class beaches such as Saunton Sands, Croyde and Westward Ho! – all of which are famous for their surfing qualities, vast stretches of sand and great dunes. The Championship Links golf course at Saunton which is just 7 miles away and fishing is available nearby.
